I: The employees of US airline Continental Airlines who frisked former president APJ Abdul Kalam, could face a six month term in jail or a Rs 10 lakh fine.

That is the maximum punishment for violating instructions issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the country's nodal air security agency. The BCAS filed an FIR against the airline on Tuesday, claiming that by frisking Kalam, Continental had done just that.

The FIR was preceded by a huge uproar in both houses of Parliament, as members cutting across party lines, fumed over the insult meted out to the ex-President.

Kalam had been physically checked and asked to remove his footwear by the airline staff as he was about to board a Contintental flight at New Delhi airport on his way to Newark (New Jersey).

In a statement Continental Airlines acknowledged Kalam had been frisked, but claimed it had no choice. "All carriers flying to the US must follow the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements and procedures," the statement said. "These impose a final security check just before boarding the aircraft. There is no exception to this rule." TALK TO US Was Kalam insulted? Should anyone be exempt from security?

Airline sources maintained while Indian politicians may have been blowing the matter out of proportion, TSA rules are not strictly implemented by most American airlines in India, and by frisking Kalam, Continental may have gone too far. "It's true there is a rule, but there are always exceptions for VVIPs," said a foreign airline official, on condition of anonymity. "Many carriers fly between India and the US, but none of them frisk even middle-level politicians the way they do common passengers.

The international norm, moreover, is to have a reciprocal arrangement. A former president of India, for instance, should get the same treatment in the US that a former US president gets in New Delhi.
"Would any Indian airline have frisked Bill Clinton?" the official asked.

கடந்த ஏப்ரல் 24 அன்று அமெரிக்கா செல்லும் கான்டினென்டல் ஏர்லைன்ஸ் விமானத்தில் கலாம் ஏறுவதற்கு முன்பு அவ்விமான பாதுகாப்பு அதிகாரிகள் அவரிடம் சாதாரண பயணியைப் போல சோதனை நடத்தியதாக கலாமுக்கு நெருக்கமான வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்தன.

கலாம் இவ்விவகாரத்தை அரசின் கவனத்துக்கு கொண்டுசெல்லவில்லை. எனினும் தற்போது இவ்விவகாரம் வெளியே வந்துள்ளதையடுத்து, இதுகுறித்து விசாரணை நடத்த விமானப் போக்குவரத்து பாதுகாப்பு அமைப்புக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளதாக மத்திய விமானப் போக்குவரத்துத்துறை அமைச்சர் பிரபுல் படேல் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் தெரிவித்தார்.

'இப்போதுதான் இச்சம்பவம் குறித்து எனக்குத் தெரியவந்தது. இதில் தகுந்த நடவடிக்கை எடுக்குமாறும், சம்மந்தப்பட்டவர்களை மன்னிப்புக் கேட்குமாறும் கூற உள்ளோம்' என்றார் அவர்.

இந்நிலையில், அவ்விமான நிறுவனத்தின் மக்கள் தொடர்பு அதிகாரி அபர்ணா கூறுகையில், இது விமான பாதுகாப்பின் வழக்கமான சோதனைதான் என்றும் விஐபி மற்றும் விவிஐபிக்களுக்கு என சிறப்பு விதிகள் எதுவும் இல்லை என்றும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

It is not surprising that he got such a treatment from an foreign airliner. Every life is precious. Law should be the same for all and should not have any exception irrespective of the social status or offices held. There is nothing wrong in security check of an ex-pres. He is such a genius, he would not have objected the frisking. It is all done for everyone's safety. There could be one rogue president in the future, like Mu Ka. Does anybody think MK should be exempted from security check when he is out of the offfice. NO. We cannot risk other people lives by exempting security check for this betrayer (MK) just because he was the first citizen once.

There is no wrong in checking the former president or prime minister. Half of them, don't even have security agents with them. For all those people suggesting that, he should not have been checked, I have an information. After sept 2001, Al Gore was checked due to a random computer. He did not complain, no one made a big fuss about it. We should be happy that, for the first time, in India, people are allowed to do their job without intervention by politicians. Hats off the security official and Dr. Kalam for not making this an issue

Dr. APJ is a true gentlemanand he did not have any problem regarding this, therefore, this issue should be ignored. This is absolutely a formal security check up. If this happens to any other big (not great)politician other than Dr. Kalam then now India will be complaining this issure Hilary Clinton if my guess is not wrong. In genereal, no exceptions should be there even for so called great people (politicians) who are being elected by common people. Then, why is this security check for common people who elect these so called big people (politicians).

Kalam has proved his modesty by ignoring this incident! This is also not the first time that an Indian celebrity being checked in Airport. When George Fernandes was the defence minister, he was subjected to this sort of checking in America and Kamal Hassan was checked in Cananda and so on. This is a precautionary routine for International Airports and need not be blown beyond its limits.

அபர்ணா அவர்களே.. இந்த "வழக்கமான சோதனை"யை சோனியா காந்தியிடமோ, பால் தாக்கரேயிடமோ அல்லது எங்கள் கருணாநிதியிடமோ செய்யும் துணிச்சல் உங்களுக்கு இருக்கிறதா..? அவ்வளவுதான் அவர்களின் தொண்டர்கள் உங்களை துவம்சம் செய்து விடுவார்கள். இப்போது வந்திருக்கும் ஹிலாரி கிளிண்டனிடம் கூட திரும்பி போகும்போது இது மாதிரி சோதனை செய்வீர்களா? அப்துல் கலாம் நாட்டிற்காக தன சொந்த வாழ்வையே அர்பணித்தவர். அவரின் உடைகளை சோதனை இட்டு, ஷூவை எல்லாம் கழற்றி பார்த்தது மிகவும் அவமரியாதையான செயல். இதற்கு வெறும் மன்னிப்பு போதாது. சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் தானாக பதவி விலக வேண்டும் அல்லது விலக்கப்படவேண்டும்.
