SL military steps up surveillance during Genocide Memorial Week

Following SL Minister Karu Jayasuriya's ‘warning’ against those trying to commemorate fallen LTTE Heroes, the intelligence wing of the occupying Sri Lankan military has stepped up monitoring Tamil activists and politicians who mark commemoration events during the genocide memorial week this year. The intelligence operatives of the SL military have been photographing and videoing those who organise remembrance meetings and gatherings organised by Tamil activists and politicians, said NPC Councillor M.K. Shivajilingam, a key force in the NPC behind the process of passing the Genocide Resolution. In the meantime, Sri Lankan Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) responsible for the Northern Province police permissions was yet to respond to an application to mark commemoration for the slain civilians at Mu'l'livaaykkaal on 18 May.
The application seeking police permission was sent by the NPC minister of Education, Cultural Affairs and Sports, T. Kurukularajah, news sources in Jaffna said.
In the meantime, a group of grassroots politicians, who went to attend a memorial event at Mu'l'livaaykkaal on May 12th were systematically monitored by the SL military intelligence. The people who gathered were photographed and videoed.
Similarly, the SL military intelligence operatives also monitored a meeting organised by the Tamil Civil Society Forum (TCSF) on Sunday to discuss Tamils right to mark collective memorial events.
Meanwhile, the patrol and deployment of policemen has been silently stepped up in the North in the recent days.
SL Cabinet Minister of ‘Buddha Sasana, Public Administration and Democratic Rule’ was encouraging the occupying Sinhala forces by deploying ‘terrorism’ terminology while the UNP minister was attending a military function at the main base of the SL military in North at Palaali.
At the same time, the new regime is marking May 19th as ‘Day of Defeating Separatism’ at Matara in the South, news sources in Colombo said.
However, the students and the teachers union at the University of Jaffna have vowed to mark the Genocide Memorial Week. The TCSF has also encouraged the people to mark their collective right by organising public memorial events.
In the meantime, the notorious commander of the 57th Division of the occupying SL military during the final stages of the war, Major General Jagath Dias, who was a key commander at the ground level during the execution of the genocidal onslaught, has now been appointed as the new ‘Army Chief of Staff’ to the SL military by the new regime.
The act was made to send a message to the SL military during the Genocide Memorial Week, informed sources in Colombo said adding that the global powers, particularly Washington and New Delhi, were competing with each other in giving a facelift to the genocidal SL military.
Jagath Dias was forced to withdraw as vice-ambassador to Germany and Switzerland in 2011 following the cases filed against him by the legal activists in the Tamil diaspora and the human rights groups in Germany and Switzerland.
