Promote Linguistic Equality: Hindi is Not National Language of India

 Promote Linguistic Equality:
Hindi is Not National Language of India

Dear Friends, Check the protests by our North-East students for the linguistic rights in Delhi University. Recently launched a protest asking Delhi University to stop indirectly imposing Hindi. Students released memorandum to Ministry of HRD, you could see the excerpt of it below and full copy in the link.

Its Good to see youth from North-East actively voicing against Hindi imposition, and we already have many North-East Friends in this ca. 1000 membered group. Hopefully youth from various linguistic groups could start networking with each other, towards our common goal of bringing constitutional amendment that no single language is sole official language of union, all 8th Schedule Languages are official language of union and the lethargy of updating 8th schedule list must be condemned and be updated regularly.

_________________________ ________________________ ____________________
Excerpt From NEFIS Memorandum:

Respected Sir,

We are submitting this memorandum to register our deeply felt sense of resentment against the new course structure that is to be introduced by Delhi University next academic year onward. It has come to our notice that as per the requirements of the new course structure it would become compulsory for every student to learn either Hindi or one of the Modern Indian Languages (MIL) as part of the foundational course. [please see Annexure I attached herewith has acopy of the new proposed syllabus displayed on Delhi University website.] Sir,we are certain that your good office is aware of the fact that MILs consist only of the languages recognized by the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India which consists of Assamese/Axomiya, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri,Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri (also Meitei or Meithei), Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi,Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Even from this narrow list, the university has the infrastructure/faculty to offer only a very small number of languages. This means that the languages of a number of communities from all parts of India and particularly the North-East would not be offered to the students by the university. We consider this dismal situation a result, not of the inadequacy of our respective languages but a by-product of the long standing bias and neglect on part of the government of India and the respective state governments in ensuring that the distinct cultural identity and dignity of the marginal/minoritygroups and communities is preserved. The fact that the languages of so many communities/marginal groups is not given due recognition is not accidental but the unfortunate result of the insolent attitude of an arrogant state that chooses to impose its culture and language upon marginal groups/communities inthe manner of a haughty conqueror.

Students from the North-East, if they are forced to opt for the compulsory language course, they would either fail the examination or would pass put with lower grades. If this is allowed to happen then the disadvantage of the youth from the North-East in seeking jobs in the labour market would become worse.

Sir, it is high time that the government recognizes our right to equality of opportunity with the students from the rest of thecountry. The government and the institutions run by it cannot shirk from their responsibility to pay particular attention to the special needs of the vulnerable sections of the society, but so far the attitude of the University administration has been most disappointing. Despite three protests and the submission of a memorandum by us, the University administration did not deem it necessary to even reply to us and instead treated us like criminals. Gates to the dean’s office, which usually remain open for thorough fare, were shut in our faces, tight security was clamped down, heavily armed police was called in and we were video recorded every time we tried to meet the Dean or theVice-Chancellor to convey our message. The security guards hurled dirty abuses upon us and some of us were even manhandled. Apart from this the University administration has even been resorting to making individual telephone calls and intimidation of our organizers. This is hardly a record becoming of the premier institution of learning of a country that claims itself to be the world’s largest democracy. Sir it is not the sheer size that makes a country great, the spirit of inclusiveness and sensitivity toward the vulnerable sections are by far the much more important criteria. The repressive tactics used by the University administration has lead us to lose faith that the institutions run by the government of India are capable of living up to the highest standards ofdemocratic spirit and inclusiveness that the oppressed minorities of thiscountry expect of it.

We appeal to the good office of your officeto kindly intervene into this matter and ensure the following:
1. Make the compulsory Hindi/MIL course optional.
2. Take immediate steps to develop the infrastructure, adequate faculty and syllabus for the MILs presently offered by the University.
3. Immediately look into the matter of students who were illegally forced to take the compulsory Hindi exam in the older format resulting in their failure in the University examination and ensure that they are provided the best possible remedy
4. Provide other kinds of remedies/reliefs that this ministry may deem fit, apt and just to ensure the welfare of the affected students.

Casteism, genocide, work hand in hand in Sinhala mind-set

Casteism, genocide, work hand in hand in Sinhala mind-set

[TamilNet, Friday, 05 April 2013, 23:49 GMT]
Casteist terms used in derogatory ways by Sinhalese in their references towards Tamils reveal the sociological nature of the genocidal mind-set of Sinhalese in the island of Sri Lanka. "How many people outside of Sri Lanka know that 'Sakkiliya' is a Sinhala term used to refer to a Tamil person [...],” asks Christopher Tuckwood, who has introduced a new Internet-based tool, named Hatebase, to study hate language in predicting and preventing genocide. Tuckwood is the Executive Director and Co-founder of The Sentinel Project for Genocide Prevention, a Canada-based non-profit organisation dedicated to detecting and averting genocide throughout the globe.

Derogatory references to Tamils in a casteist language predate the modern national conflict among nations in the island, commented an Eezham Tamil activist in the island citing the term Para-Demala used by Anagarika Dharmapala. Sinhala language has two meanings for the word Para: one meaning foreigner (from Sanskrit Paradesi) and the other meaning an untouchable (from Dravidian Pa'raiyar).

While casteism is at the core of the Sinhala mind-set in manifesting into the genocide of Eezham Tamils, a campaign is currently being made among Eezham Tamils that conversion to Buddhism is the way to help them overcome casteism. Even in the mainstream Sinhala-Buddhist chapters such as Malwatta and Asgiriya, no one other than the Goyigama Sinhalese could become monks, the Eezham Tamil activist cited.

The references to the caste terms in derogatory ways are unfortunate as the practice, apart from the genocidal connotations in the island, directly affects the dignity and upward mobility of the concerned aboriginal communities of South Asia, the activist commented.

In this context, the Eezham Tamil activist drew the attention of the Tamils in London on the use of the term ‘Pariah’ by the former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Ironically, the Labour politician used the British colonial English word originating from derogatory references of the colonialists towards a community of Tamils, to support the Tamil campaign now, without realising that the usage offends an ancient section of Tamils.

Last month, while discouraging the British Queen from attending the CHOGM meet in Sri Lanka, Miliband said that the hosting regime is fast “moving towards pariah status.”
Pa'raiyar and Chakkiliyar are two ancient communities among Tamils whose identities were pushed down to derogatory status. The Anglo-Indian word Pariah that got into English dictionaries has come from the Pa'raiyar community of Tamils.

Tamils, especially in London, have to boldly tell the English dictionary makers to delist the word. Rather than blindly looking upon the West, the diaspora Tamils have to understand the significance of waging such protests in bringing in an awareness of the nature and continuity of the kind of oppression faced by Tamils under colonialism and then under the succeeding Sinhala colonialism, the Eezham Tamil activist in the island said.

Casteism and genocide today are significantly connected to the continuity of the colonial mind-set and to the continuity in constant transfer of power and protection on to the oppressors. If the right kind of struggle is not waged with right kind of awareness we would only get into one prison from the other, the activist further said.

Meanwhile, explaining the new Internet tool, Hatebase, Mr Christopher Tuckwood on Friday told Wired.co.uk: “Hatebase helps us to know what to look for and to make sense of what we see".

Wired.co.uk website is an acclaimed monthly magazine that reports primarily on the effects of science and technology.

In a separate introductory article, Timothy Quinn, the ICT advisor of The Sentinel Project, said: “In the information-rich twenty-first century, good data remains the Achilles’ heel of genocide studies.”

Although the core of Hatebase is its community-edited vocabulary of multilingual hate speech, a critical concept in Hatebase is “regionality”, writes Timothy Quinn in his article.

“The users can associate hate speech with geography, thus building a parallel dataset of ‘sightings’, which can be monitored for frequency, localization, migration, and transformation,” Mr Quinn says.
Hatebase.org
Hatebase.org
Hatebase is available to end users through a Wikipedia-like web interface, and to developers through an Application Programming Interface (API).

Launched on 25 March 2013, the latest project termed as the world’s largest online database of hate speech has received wider attention with coverage appearing on Foreign Policy Magazine and in the Wired Magazine in the UK.

However, according to The Sentinel Project, the database is still in its early stages. The developers say that further functionality will be added in the coming months.

Crowdsourcing is the way of acquiring the content and editing services from a large group of people in an online community.

The mission of The Sentinel Project for Genocide Prevention, founded by Christopher Tuckwood and Taneem Talukdar while they were students at the University of Waterloo in 2008, is to prevent the crime of genocide worldwide through effective early warning and cooperation with victimized peoples to carry out non-violent prevention initiatives.

In 2009, The Sentinel Project's approach was selected as a finalist in Google's 10 to the 100th competition for innovative social application of technology.

Dear Arvind Kejriwal,
Thank you for your mail inviting me to join your movement and appeal for a donation.
I agree with your observation that"Most of today's problems are due to corrupt politics. Unless it is cleansed, nothing would improve. "
At the same time due to the wrong and rotten approach of the politicians people are suffering a lot.For example, take the "Koodankulam Atomic powerplant project" which is a threat to the lives of Fishermen living in the surrounding area.It is also an impending hazard
detrimental to the ecological system.Due to the mixing of the waste the ocean itself may turn as a poison to the flora and fauna.
Thousands and thousands of village peoiple are conducting Dharnas and holding fasts for more than a period of Four months there.I wonder how can your party be termed as Aamaadmi Party, while you are not at all uttering even a word about the plight of the people there at Koodankulam?
The Genocide conducted by Rajapakshe at SriLanka is condemned by the people throughout the world and almost the entire humankind is pressing the U.N. to conduct an impartial enquiry about the sufferings of the Eezham Tamils.
You never spoke a word expressing your condmnation of the atrocoties committed by Rajapakshe government. Is it not the duty of a humanist to sympathise the people who are tortured and tormented by a racist military junta under the mask of Anti-terorism?
It is quite clear that your whole attention is concentrated at Delhi.
"Corruption has reached such levels that it is becoming impossible for the common man to survive. In Delhi, It is becoming impossible for them to even pay water and electricity bills which are highly inflated on account of corruption. The story of Delhi could well be the story of India."
You want to threaten the Govt.of India as well as multimillionares engaged in the expansion of their corporate development.
I am sorry you have to learn more things and acquire a broad vision before you float a party.
You are under the assumption that Delhi is India or India is Delhi.
Please see the plights and perils of the people at Assam,Nagaland,Andhra and Tamilnadu and assess a possible action programme to redress the grievances of people from Himalayas to Capecomorin.
After you derive a pragmatic plan of action let us know it and we will surely with you.
Thank you,

Aam Admi Party

My Fellow Indian,

Under Anna's leadership, India came on streets against corruption. The people demanded a strong anti-corruption law. The government did not agree. None of the parties agreed. Obviously, they couldn't have agreed because if they passed a strong Jan Lokpal Bill, most of the politicians would be in jail and their properties would be confiscated.

My friend, our entire political system has become rotten. Most of today's problems are due to corrupt politics. Unless it is cleansed, nothing would improve. That's why we entered politics - we realized that staying away will not work. We have now formed the AAM AADMI PARTY. This party does not seek to capture power; it seeks to restore power back to the people.

Corruption has reached such levels that it is becoming impossible for the common man to survive. In Delhi, It is becoming impossible for them to even pay water and electricity bills which are highly inflated on account of corruption. The story of Delhi could well be the story of India. The time has come for people to rise up together and say that they will not allow this corruption.

To give people strength to protest, to remove fear from their minds and join the civil disobedience movement I have been sitting on an indefinite fast at a jhuggi colony in Sundar-nagri , New Delhi since 23rd March. More than 9 lakh people of Delhi and several eminent and patriotic citizens of the country such as Shri Annaji Hazare , Justice Krishna Iyer, Admiral Ramdas and Shri J.M. Lyngdoh have already pledged support towards this campaign.

Gandhiji said that politics devoid of honesty and spirituality is disastrous for the country. We have to change the politics of this country. I am confident that together, we can.

I seek your time and money in this mission as we are all working towards a common cause. Most parties are funded by big corporates for something in return but this will not happen in Aam Aadmi Party. This party would be funded by Aam Aadmi and Aam Aurat of this country. That would be the beginning of an honest and transparent politics, unfortunately which runs on black money today

Whatever amount you contribute – small or big – is not important. Every paisa matters because it is honest, and will go a long way in redefining the politics. In the interest of financial transparency, we publish the names of all the donors every week on our website.

5,000 Tamils marching in London reject LLRC, demand Tamil Eelam

[TamilNet, Friday, 05 April 2013, 19:45 GMT]
More than 5,000 Eezham Tamils, from all walks of life, took to the streets in London on Friday, demanding UN referendum to determine the creation of Tamil Eelam. “We want action, not words,” the protesters said rejecting any solution based on Sri Lanka's LLRC. Demanding the United Nations not to support the genocidal Sri Lanka, the Tamils in UK said they are with the students of Tamil Nadu and thanked the Tamil Nadu State Assembly for passing a historic resolution demanding UN referendum on separate Eezham. In a historic referendum initiated by an independent group of British Tamils, held two years ago, 99.33% of 64,692 Eezham Tamils had voted in favour of the formation of sovereign and independent Tamil Eelam in the contiguous north and east of the island of Sri Lanka.

Tamils protest in UK

On Friday, the protesters, braving unusually chilly winds, took the march from Trafalgar Square and concluded it at 10 Downing Street.

Raising slogans demanding the creation of a sovereign Tamil Eelam, the protesters also burnt an effigy of the genocide-accused Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Second generation Eezham Tamil youth and women took part in large numbers in the march organised by the Tamil Coordinating Committee (TCC-UK).

While the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), gagged from representing the political mandate of the Eezham Tamils at home, polled 233,000 votes in the last parliamentary elections, the referenda held in 10 countries alone in the diaspora in 2009 and 2010, polled around 210,000 votes re-mandating the creation of sovereign and independent Tamil Eelam.

Under the 6th Amendment to the unitary Sri Lankan constitution, Tamil political parties are restricted from representing the political aspiration of the Eezham Tamil nation as mandated in the last democratic elections held in 1977.

Indian housing aid programmed for exploitation

Indian housing aid programmed for exploitation by Colombo agents in East

[TamilNet, Thursday, 04 April 2013, 23:53 GMT]
Disregarding the repeated requests by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) politicians in the Batticaloa district to include local community leaders such as the heads of the Rural Development Societies (RDS), representatives from women groups and trustees of temples in the committees to select the beneficiaries of the Indian housing scheme, the SL government has handed over the selection process in the Batticaloa district to its paramilitary and the political outfits of SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling party, civil sources in the district say. Despite their rapport with New Delhi, the TNA has failed in making India to deliver the aid directly to the affected people without the exploitation of genocidal Colombo, the civil sources in the district further said.

Under the Indian housing scheme a total of 4,000 housing units are to be constructed in the Eastern Province, out of which 2,000 units are allocated for the Batticaloa district and 1,000 units each for the Ampaa'rai and Trincomalee districts.

75% of the houses allocated for Batticaloa district are to be allocated for the uprooted people from Paduvaankarai region and the Indian High Commission in Colombo wants to complete 300 houses by 20 April in the first phase, the sources further said.

Villages that come under Vellaave'li, Vavu'na-theevu and Koa'ra'laip-pattu South Divisional Secretariat divisions are earmarked for this project.

The selection of recipients will have to be done by the divisional secretaries.

Preliminary meetings in this connection were held in the three DS divisions headed by Mahinda Rajapaksa’s SLFP and paramilitary representatives.

Civil sources in the three divisions say that the agents of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling party and the paramilitary operatives operated by Colombo are instructing the divisional secretaries to select the recipients proposed by them, in an attempt to misuse the scheme to woo supporters to their outfits and groups.

Initially, the beneficiaries were to be selected for 100 housing units in each DS division and the selections were to be made according to a points-based scheme.

If the chief occupant of a household is alive 10 points are allotted. If the chief occupant is a widowed person, 20 points are to be allotted. In a parentless family, if the oldest is an unmarried female 30 points are allotted. If there are children under 12 years of age, 20 points are added, and if the children residing with the parents are above the age of eighteen, 10 points are added.

However, a discriminatory practice of not allocating any point to those, who have been members of the LTTE in the past, is being adopted to justify the selections made by the paramilitary and SLFP outfits, the sources said.

Most of the families in Paduvaankarai had members in the LTTE in the past.

Further, those who received houses donated by NGOs will not be entitled for the houses under the Indian scheme, divisional secretaries have said. This has led to discriminatory practices as those who had earlier received ad-hoc housing units donated by NGOs in the past are also discriminated despite the fact that several of these huts now stand roofless.

New Buddhist shrine built at Trinco Saiva sacred site

New Buddhist shrine built at Trinco Saiva sacred site

[TamilNet, Thursday, 04 April 2013, 22:47 GMT]
A Buddhist shrine has been built at the precincts of Kanniya Hot Wells a Saiva sacred site in a traditional Tamil village in Trincomalee district. A fifteen-acre land has been appropriated by the SL Government Agent Major General (retd.) Ranjith de Silva on the instruction of Colombo. The Buddhist shrine has a signboard giving the name of the place of worship as ‘Unuthiya Lin Rajamaha Viharaya’, meaning the ‘Royal Great Temple of the Hotwater Wells’. The term ‘Viharaya’ used in the board implies that a Buddhist Sangha (monastery) has been established there. The local Saiva myths associate the place with pre-Buddhist times of the King Ravana of the Ramayana epic. For centuries, the Hindu population of the region used to come to this site to perform rituals to the deceased and ancestors like the Hindus in India go to Gaya and Varanasi.

Considering locations of natural wonders as sacred sites and building myths around them was part of every religion. Culture, identity and belongingness of a people with their landscape and country are emotionally connected to such phenomena.

However, non-Sinhala Buddhists could have no sacred places of theirs in the island and they could have no belongingness to any part of the land in the island, is the mind-set of the Sinhala-Buddhist State.

The State was following this policy for decades and the talk of ‘multicultural’ sacred sites was always a deception.

Anyone who doubt the structural genocide practised in the island and ask for the affected to come out with evidence to prove, should see the current religious monopoly practised at common sacred places such as the Adams Peak and Kathirkaamam to realise it with irrefutable evidence, Saiva religious circles in Trincomalee told TamilNet.

Seven springs, each with varying temperature, are situated close to each other at the site. The local people also believe that the hot wells have healing powers.

A Saiva temple for Pi’l’laiyaar situated at the site and the associated mutt (resting place for pilgrims) were destroyed during anti-Tamil pogroms.

The occupying Sri Lanka Army now guards the Kanniya Hot Wells area.

Sinhala traders have put up stalls to sell goods to the visitors. Not a single Tamil trader is allowed to run business at the site.

Earlier the administration of the hot wells and its environment including the Pi’l’laiyaar temple and the mutt was in the hands of Trincomalee Madaththadi Muthtumaraiyamman Koayil, a Saiva temple in the Trincomalee city.

Later, the civic body of Trincomalee Town and Gravets took over the maintenance of them.

In 2002, on the orders of the then Trincomalee Government Agent N. H. K. Nelumdeniya, a Sinhalese, the renovation work of the centuries old Hindu temple had been suspended on representations made by some Buddhist priests, who claimed that the bricks found at the site belonged to Anuradhapura period.

At that time R. Sampanthan, Trincomalee district parliamentarian had lodged a strong protest with the then Government Agent and with the Prime Minister’s Secretary and the Peace Secretariat in Colombo that the Hindu community will not tolerate any interference in their legitimate rights which they have had for generations and centuries.

Later, the newly appointed SL Government Agent, who was a former SL military commander, Major General (retired) Ranjith de Silva, stopped the Trincomalee Town and Gravets Piratheasa Chapai (PS) from maintaining the hot wells stating that the site now belonged to the Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology.

The Sinhala military SLGA also directed his men to remove the name board that had been put up by the civic body.

The name board at the site was later removed in the presence of the GA, who is a former Sri Lankan military commander.

The SLGA had told at that time that the name board put by the PS had given 'wrong historical information' to the public.

The former commander GA has also directed the Trincomalee Town and Gravets PS to stop collecting money from the public for maintaining the hot wells and the surrounding area as the PS has no legal status except the Department of Archaeology.

TNA Parliamentary Group Leader and Trincomalee district parliamentarian Mr R. Sampanthan last Tuesday visited the Kanniya hot wells area after the construction of the Buddhist shrine and found the destroyed Pi’l’laiyaar temple that also had a mutt where Saiva pilgrims for centuries conducted Anthiraddi rites
