Lanka puts Tamil reconciliation on back-burner, US miffed

Assistant Secretary of State Robert O Blake, the Obama [ Images ] administration's point man for South Asia, in an exclusive interview with rediff.com's Aziz Haniffa, reveals why the US is upset with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse [ Images ]. The Obama administration has expressed its deep disappointment with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse for relegating the devolution of power in the Tamil majority areas, in the country's northern province, to the back-burner.

The international community had urged the Lankan government to put the motion in process after crushing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran [ Images ].

Assistant Secretary of State Robert O Blake, the administration's point man for South Asia, in an exclusive interview with rediff.com, revealed, "We have been disappointed to hear recent statements by the president (Rajapakse) that he is not going to be in a position to take any measures on the devolution of power until after a presidential election."

Blake, who until recently was the United States ambassador to Sri Lanka [ Images ], before assuming his new position as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, said the US believes "something needs to take place more quickly than that and we certainly are encouraging the government to do so."

More than 250,000 Tamil refugees, who fled the war between the LTTE [ Images ] and the Sri Lankan army in the country's strife-torn north more than two months ago, continue to languish in the makeshift camps for internally displaced persons (IDP).

Asked what the latest US position on Sri Lanka was, Blake said, "We have encouraged progress on two particular fronts."

"First, on the humanitarian front, there are still more than 250,000 internally displaced persons who are residing in camps under detention conditions, and so we have encouraged the Sri Lankan government to allow them freedom of movement, and more importantly to allow them to be resettled as quickly as possible," he explained.

Blake pointed out that the Sri Lankan government "has pledged to resettle the majority of the IDPs by the end of this year, which would certainly be a very welcome step."

"So, we just encourage rapid progress towards that goal, but also steps (should) be taken so that the international community, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross and others have access to the camps, so that the IDPs can be assured of receiving treatment and everything that goes on there is up to international standards," he said.

"Secondly," Blake added, "We hope that our friends in Sri Lanka will make progress towards political reconciliation because really that's the only way that there's going to be a definitive end to terrorism. And that means figuring out ways to have a dialogue with the Tamil community."

This includes "the wide Tamil community inside, but also outside Sri Lanka, about exactly what those measures should entail," he said.

He emphasised that this "needs to take place sooner rather than later."

Lanka puts Tamil reconciliation on back-burner,
by Ilakkuvanar Thiruvalluvan on Aug 12, 2009 01:33 AM

The American government, which is one of the co-accused in the genocide, should take remedies to eradicate their sin and to give life to the Tamils, who are belonging to the island. There is no use of interviews and other views. It should take strong against Singhala Government American people are stand for democracy and humanism. It is the duty of their govt. to follow the people's opinion. So, the first and last duty of the government is to form and recognize Tamil Eezham.

Only the people in killing business discuss about who killed more. Also you are trying to compete with a dead snake here.

Get to the act fast. Get down to the business of devolving powers. Don't worry about the snake - it's dead.

Show sincerity, stick to the words and don't debate as to who is a better terrorist.

solution to the sri-lankan problem
by R Swaminathan on Aug 11, 2009 09:22 PM | Hide replies

The only solution to the sri-lankan ethnic problem is to merge sri-lanka with india, north and north-east of the island be part of tamil nadu, and rest sinhala pradesh.
Sinahalese do not know how to live with the tamils as equal citizens nor do they realise the dangers of descriminating and torturing the tamil minority. The day is not far off when it backfires and thus the island nation will be in turmoil.Hence as part of the indian democracy they can be part of the mulicultural/multireligious democracy and they may in course the time adapt to the culture of
peaceful-coexistance like all indians

your comments surprise me.Referring to fellow countrymen with derogartory remarks is something done by sri-lankan sinhalese mentioned earlier.
In indian democracy there are people of all hues ,ethnicity and language.Having lived in different parts of india,i can say that there are good and bad people everywhere and branding any one based on his language /ethnicity is not in tune with indian ethos.
Any one who does so is weakeningthe very basis of our common identity.

The Ipkf killed raped and looted thousands of Eelam Tamisl. The Sinhalese have so far killed 250000 Tamil civilians ethnically cleansed around 1.5 2 million . May have fled to the west the rest internally displaced or in refugee camps. In the last month they killed 70000 Tamil civilans in teh Vanni by bombing and shelling and using banned chemical and phosperous weapons. They have now incarcerated arooudn 300000 Vanni tamil in horrible Nazi concentration camps where no ons is alloed in and they are slowly starved and beatedn to death . These ae all acts of kindenss ot these anti Tamils and they do not mention anything aboout this. However to these Sinhalese who are posting cooment here in various pseudo names . That the LTTe had killed aroudn 4000 Sinhalese thighs and criminals who were sest to the Tamil east to terrorise kil lan dchase out Eelam Tamils in a war criem and terrorism. SO what were these thugs sent by the Sri Lanka governmet and posing as Sinhala civilans doing in the East . They had no righ tot be there and were there to kill and for ethnic cleansing actvities so theLTTE bumped them off. The Sinhalese try ot potray these Sinhala hooligans as innocent civilians.

After 1981, Prabha lost his direction and turned LTTE into a drug merchandised fund raised organization. He gave cyanide instead of balance between pen and power. All progressive Tamil in rank were killed.

LEADERS speech still now

"I am not worried about the opinion of the Tamil people... now we cannot think of them, not about their lives or their opinions... the more you put pressure in the North, the happier the Sinhalese people will be here... Really, if I starve the Tamils out, the Sinhalese people will be happy."

-----By JR Jayawardene, former president of Sri Lanka, London Daily Telegraph, 11th July 1983

"It is a systematic genocide going on in Sri Lanka. We cannot tolerate it nor can we be silent spectators."

--- By Indira Gandhi, former prime minister of India, July 1983

BUt in 2009 - Same attitude of Sinhalese against Tamils.....but sonia, karunanidhi..

NoOne really helps now when the issue is more seriuos and allowed 50,000 people killed just May 2009.

What happened in lieu the small creature fed on Indian fund and sympathy dared to assasinate ex Indian PM. Well India waited for right time and then first the Tamil Nadu parties were taken into confident. They understood and disconnected from LTTE. Then go green was given to wipe them out.

With controlled methods and support from China and Pakistan SLA wiped out these terrorists.
