Rapp disappointed at Sri Lanka's lack of accountability to atrocities

US Ambassador at Large on War Crimes Issues, Stephen J. Rapp, during his visit to the UN in New York June 11, said on Sri Lanka, he is disappointed on the "accountability for the alleged grave atrocities near the end of the conflict on both sides," and on the lack of implementation of the provisions of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, Inner City Press (ICP) which covers UN, said.
With UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay now scheduled to visit Sri Lanka, Rapp said that the most recent resolution invites Pillay "and the Special Rapporteurs to work with" Sri Lanka's Rapapaksa government "to overcome these deficits," ICP reported.
Rapp said the US will be "watching that very carefully" to decide what steps are necessary, according to the ICP.
Meanwhile, ICP's Matthew Lee said he had planned to ask the UK Prime Minister Cameron "about going to Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, given its "accountability" record," during the publicized scheduled stakeout session in the UN last month, but the Prime Minister instead entertained one question from the Reuters.
