Paramilitary terrorizes Vaakarai, instructs people to vote for UPFA

Paramilitary operatives led by former chief minister of the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) are threatening the voters in Vaakarai area of Batticaloa district that they would be driven out from the region if they vote for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) at the forthcoming election to the EPC. The paramilitary men have instructed the people to vote for Rajapaksa's ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in which Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan would be participating as the lead candidate.

A group of Pillayan's TMVP paramilitary men, led by Thiraviyanathan alias Jeyam who is also a candidate for the UPFA in the district, has been roaming in Vaakarai village where more than 7,500 Tamils are eligible to vote at the elections.

Vaakarai village is located 75 km north of Batticaloa city in Koa'ra'laip-pattu North DS division.

Tamils in Vaakarai live in constant fear due to the threat posed by the Pillayan paramilitary operatives led by Thiraviyanathan alias Jeyam.

Jeyam has been repeating the same modus operandi which he adopted in 2008 EPC elections in the East.

Jeyam group has been behind several robberies in Vaa'laich-cheanai, Kalkudaa and Peathaa'lai after the capture of the Batticaloa district by the Sri Lanka Army.

Though several complaints were made against the crime committed by the paramilitary gang but no action was taken against him as he had been supporting the government in power.
