SL Minister, backed by CBK, appropriates Tamils’ lands in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Thursday, 07 May 2015, 22:56 GMT]
Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Housing and Samurdhi Amir Ali Sahabdeen, who became a minister during the regime of Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (CBK) in 2004, is again stepping up the appropriation of lands at Kirimichchi, located 62 km north of Batticaloa. The lands belong to Eezham Tamils who are still uprooted and refused access to these lands, civil sources at Koara’laip-pattu North (Vaakarai) division of Batticaloa told TamilNet on Thursday. The land grab, schemed under CBK regime, aims to annex more lands to the Muslim-dominated division of Koara’laip-pattu Central (Vaazhaich-cheanai) by involving a section of wealthy businessmen from Kaaththaan-kudi, Oadda-maavadi and Ea’raavoor after Amir Ali became a non-cabinet minister in the ‘new’ regime with the backing of CBK, the sources further said.

The SL minister has taken several teams of businessmen to the area in recent days to scheme a colony at the lands subjected to illegal appropriation, Tamil civil sources in Koara’laip-pattu North said. The Divisional Secretary in Koara’laip-pattu North was not informed about these visits, the sources further said.

The ‘inspections’ have taken place in Kirimichchai, Paninchang-kea’ni and at Aalang-ku’lam.

The uprooted Tamils from these villages are still languishing as displaced persons in Maiyilang-karachchi, Kaavatha-munai and Thiyaa-vaddavaan, the civil sources further said. The displaced Tamils were having legal documents to prove their ownership of these lands, they said.

The lands remained inaccessible for Tamils despite their efforts to resettle there during the regime of Mahinda Rajpaksa as Amir Ali, who continued as a minister under Rajapaksa regime was trying to annex the area with Koara’laip-pattu Central (Vaazhaich-cheanai) division.

Saiva temples and cultural buildings along with the houses had been destroyed between 1994 and 2004 when Amir Ali schemed the plan of creating a colony for his voters. A large jungle tract in the area was also cleared for this purpose. Some of the residential lands were also purchased from Tamil landowners.

Mr Amir Ali is also trying to appropriate the lands that come under the paper factory at Vaachaich-cheanai, sources in Batticaloa District Secretariat said.

In the meantime, Muslim activists in Mannaar said that Amir Ali was operating with the advice given by the controversial SL Minister Rishad Bathiutheen, who has appropriated lands in Mannaar district. The SL State was deploying these collaborators to cause divisions among the Tamil-speaking Muslims, they said.

Amir Ali and Rishad Bathiyutheen belong to All Ceylon Mulsim Congress (ACMC), which had split from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). The competition for wooing Muslim voters has created communal disharmony with Tamil-speaking Catholics and Hindus as well, the sources in Mannaar said.
