Dear Mr/Ms/Dr Surname,
Royal invitation to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa
I understand that President Rajapaksa has been invited to Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
As you know President Rajapaksa is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces in Sri Lanka. During the war in 2009, more than 40,000 innocent civilians including women, children, elderly and the disabled were killed through aerial bombardment of a no-fire zone set up by the government. Widely publicised Channel 4 documentary ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields’ clearly showed the evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces with the support of the Government.
During the 19th UN Human Rights Council session, the US government and several other UN members supported a resolution against Sri Lanka and given a time line for Sri Lankan Government to investigate all the war crimes charges against the Tamil Civilians during the final war. It is ironic that the British government is prepared to invite and entertain a man who is alleged to have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Syrian official invitation to the Royal wedding was withdrawn because President Assad killed his own people.
I would be very grateful if you can write to the Private Secretary to Her Majesty the Queen asking for the withdrawal of President Rajapaksa’s invitation and also raise this issue at the parliament during the prime ministers question time as well as with the foreign and commonwealth office (FCO).
Let me this opportunity to thank you for your support and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely
