Demonstrators in Jaffna demand immediate release of detained students
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 December 2012, 10:19 GMT]Amid tension and heavy deployment of occupying Sri Lankan military in the streets of Jaffna, mainstream the Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) on Tuesday staged a successful demonstration drawing hundreds of participants from all the parties of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and across the entire civil society movements in the peninsula. The demonstration staged in front of Jaffna bus stand demanded immediate release of the student representatives who have been detained by the SL police and the SL military intelligence after the students observed Heroes Day at the University hostel braving the harassments by the SL military.
For the first time after 2009, many civil and trade unions joined the mainstream Tamil parties together in staging a united demonstration.
The demonstrators also demanded the Sri Lankan government to cease all forms of harassments against journalists and to call back its military.
SL military intelligence operatives, armed with cameras, were competing with the journalists to photograph and to video the demonstration.
Following the protest, political and civil activists went together for a joint meeting at the office of the TNPF to discuss the next phase of action, news sources in Jaffna said.
Political activists of TNPF, TNA and activists of New-Democratic Marxist-Leninist Party (NDMLP) together with the representatives of the political parties from South, the United Socialist Party (USP), Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) and Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) took part in the protest.
Although there is another protest being staged in Colombo against Rajapaksa government's impeachment of SL Chief Justice, the solidarity forces from South didn't fail in sending their representatives to the protest in Jaffna on Tuesday.
