Colombo deploys military to carry out extra-judicial arrests, hostage-taking in North-East

Colombo's military Establishment has stepped up white-van abductions and hostage-taking of family members of former LTTE members in the North and East in the recent weeks. At least 13 Eezham Tamils, including a woman, are being detained at the moment in the notorious torture chamber known as 4th Floor in Colombo, legal sources in Colombo said. Ex-LTTE members returning from employment abroad in the Middle East have been subjected to arrests at Katunayake airport. In the meantime, the ‘Terrorist’ Investigation Division (TID), operated from Colombo had taken two siblings of a former LTTE member in Batticaloa as hostages till the person they were searching for turned himself over to the TID, the sources in Colombo said. While claiming ‘good-governance’ and ‘reconciliation’ to outside world, the Colombo regime has reinforced Sinhala military rule in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils.

31-year-old Jeyakanthan Muthulingam from Muththaiyan-kaddu in Vanni was detained upon his arrival at Katunayake airport on 12 April.

Another Tamil who returned from the Middle East to Vavuniyaa was also arrested a few days ago at Katunayake airport.

The abducted and arrested persons are being detained in Colombo and their families are being allowed to visit the victims with the condition that they should not talk to media regarding the arrests.

The extra-judicial abductions and the interference by the SL military in the civil affairs in the North are being justified citing the recent seizure of explosives from a former LTTE member at Thenmaraadchi in Jaffna.

Meanwhile, the SL military in Ki'linochchi has been gathering details of the workers at the shops in Ki'linochchi town. When the business owners questioned the SL military officers on why they were engaged in the job of the police, the intelligence officers threatened the shop owners to cooperate with them or face interrogations at ‘Vanni headquarters’ of the SL military at Ira'nai-madu.

Although 14,000 Eezham Tamils have been under arrest and released during the Rajapaksa regime, there are still 4,000 ex-LTTE members who have not been subjected to so-called military rehabilitation, claims the SL military commander in Jaffna. The SL commander was telling the journalists that there were at least 1,000 ex-LTTE members in Jaffna district alone, who have not undergone what he described as ‘mandatory military rehabilitation’ at the hands of the SL military.

The Tamil prisoners of war who have been struggling for their release from the jails in Anuradhapura and Colombo after several years of detention, have been forced to abandon their hunger strikes after a controversial statement from the UN High Commissioner at the recent UN Human Rights Council session. Mr Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein went on record describing the Tamil political prisoners in the jails of genocidal Sri Lanka as ‘security detainees’.
