JVP student faction seeks Tamil youth for military inspiration: SL Minister

Calling themselves as a student group, a group of the factionalised JVP is seeking to exploit former LTTE cadres in its search for military inspiration and the group is targeting to exploit the Tamil students for a military cause, claimed S.B. Dissanayake, the SL minister of Education, who has been visiting the islets of Jaffna and the University of Jaffna with the backing of EPDP paramilitary leader Douglas Devananda, who is also a minister in the cabinet of SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Commenting on the statement by the SL minister, who met some students at the University of Jaffna, student circles in Jaffna said the comment has exposed the level of paranoia prevailing in the Colombo establishment that has used its military to abduct two JVPers who are still missing.

The JVP faction is seeking to exploit the Tamil youth, claimed S. B. Dissanayake, the SL minister for Education, who is on a visit to Jaffna.

The visiting SL minister was claiming that the JVP group was plotting to launch a military campaign against the SL state from North and East.

The JVP group is interested in ‘rehabilitated’ former cadres of the LTTE. It is also aiming to woo some students of the University in Jaffna, who were earlier helping the Tigers, the SL claimed adding that the Sri Lankan state was not prepared to tolerate any military opposition. Mr. Dissanayake was meeting the students of the Jaffna University at Kailasapathy auditorium on Wednesday.

The visiting Sinhala minister, staying as a guest with Mr. Douglas Devananda, is engaging in preparatory propaganda for the Northern Provincial elections, expected to be announced by Colombo in the near future.

“There are Tamil politicians who are still dreaming of Tamil Eelam”, the visiting minister confirmed and went on stating that it would not be practically possible to create a Tamil Eelam anymore.

Mr. Dissanayake visited Kachchatheevu island in a Sri Lanka Navy helicopter and visited the Delft and Veala'nai islands.

JVP dissidents protest against Jaffna abductions of HR activists

Around 200 people, who were brought from South by the JVP dissident group, “Movement for People’s Struggle” staged a protest in Jaffna Saturday in front of Jaffna Bus Stand, demanding the release of Lalith Veeraraj, the Jaffna district organisor of the group and his friend Kugan Murugananthan. Sri Lanka soldiers and policemen equaling the number of the protestors were deployed at the site of the protest between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the motorbike of the abductees has been recovered two days earlier, along the borders of SL military High Security Zone in Achchuveali surrounding the Palaali military base.

Sources in Achchuveali said the practice of the SL military squad involved in abduction is to take the victims inside their vehicle. The motorbike could have been abandoned when the abductors took the victims into their vehicle for transport within the HSZ.

Mr. Veeraraj, the Jaffna district organisor of the JVP dissidents and Mr. Muruganathan, left the house from Aavarangkaal Sivan temple area around 5:00 p.m. last Friday in a motorbike with registration number NPGT-7852.

On Saturday, JVP dissident parliamentarian Ajith Kumara, who came from South had to argue with the SL police to stage the protest in Jaffna.

After the protest, a group of protestors went to Thinakkural newspaper offices in Jaffna, and when the group came out, they saw their vehicle had been damaged. Residents in the area said a squad believed to be SL military intelligence operatives came in motorbikes and smashed the windows of the vehicle.

Abducted JVP organiser in Jaffna feared killed

Lalith Veeraraj, the Jaffna district organiser of the Movement for People’s Struggle, a JVP dissident group and his friend Kugan Murugananthan, who were reported missing in Achchuveali on Friday are feared killed, according to the MPS faction of the JVP which staged a press conference in Jaffna on Saturday. Lalith Veeraraj has been involved in bringing out the news regarding the missing persons, political prisoners and abductions in Jaffna, Ki'linochchi, Mullaiththeevu, Mannaar and Vavuniyaa during the past months and had been warned several times by the SL intelligence operatives not to get involved in the missing persons issue.

Mr. Veeraraj and Mr. Muruganathan, left the house from Aavarangkaal Sivan temple area around 5:00 p.m. in a motorbike with registration number NPGT-7852.

Now, his party officials say they were receiving phone calls from within the SLA establishment saying that Veeraraj has been assassinated, according to Chamira Koswatte, the convenor of the Movement for People’s Struggle.

Mr. Veeraraj was working on staging a press conference for the JVP dissidents group. But, the press conference itself on Saturday turned out to be a meeting on his disappearance.

Regardless of his party affiliation with the JVP or now the dissident group, both of which fail in recognising the Tamil national question, Mr. Veeraraj and his friends were voicing for the rights of the missing persons and was maintaining good contacts with Tamil parliamentarians on the missing persons issue.

Some time back, when he went to discuss with Mrs. Pathmini Sithamparanathan, he was attacked by a gang believed to be an squad operated by the SL military intelligence.

Mr. Veeraraj is born to a Tamil father and a Sinhala mother.
