STF deployed in large numbers in North-East on election day

Commandos of Special Task Force (STF), which is a full-fledged military outfit, administratively organised under the SL Police, have been deployed in large numbers in Tamil-speaking Muslim dominated Kaththaan-kudi and Vaazhaich-cheanai towns and the suburbs in Batticaloa as well as at Chaayntha-maruthu in Ampaa'rai district. In North, the STF has been deployed in Vavuniyaa and Mannaar, news sources said. Voting is taking place smoothly in the North-East, news sources said. Initial results are expected around 11:00 p.m. local time.

STF deployment is also reported in Puththa'lam, Kandy, Kaluthura and Anuradhapura districts.

The SL Police has justified the STF deployment of armed commandos citing a request from the Commissioner of SL Elections.

The STF has been directly involved in the genocidal crimes in the East for a long time.

After the genocidal onslaught in May 2009, Colombo has been stepping up the deployment of the notorious STF commandos in all the districts in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

Corporate Watch, a non-profit research group in UK, has in recent times exposed the training provided to more than 3,500 Sri Lankan ‘policemen’ including the STF commandos including senior commanders.

The British assistance was being provided while the STF was directly engaged in acts of genocide in the East as well as in Vanni.
