Eezham Tamils preparing for unfolding phase of struggle
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 19 August 2015, 05:50 GMT]
The Eezham Tamil voting pattern in August-2015 elections resembles in certain ways the 1970 elections in then Ceylon. Mr V. Navaratnam, who had understood the course of deceptive politics by genocidal Colombo and futility of Tamils alternately looking upon Sinhala political parties, came out of the ITAK (Federal Party) to form Thamizhar Chuyaadchik Kazhakam (Tamil Self-Rule Party). The Party’s performance in 1970 elections was pathetically poor, overshadowed by the Federal Party and Tamil Congress. But it took just two years for the situation to change thoroughly. Colombo’s new constitution in 1972 compelled both the FP and TC, as well as Tamil communists, to declare higher than what Navaratnam was envisaging – independent and sovereign Tamil Eelam, which the Tamils endorsed in the 1977 elections.
The difference then and now is that in addition to the two Sinhala political parties who can’t be changed of their colours, there are the two Dadas: Washington and New Delhi directly in the field, after enacting gang-genocide on Eezham Tamils.
So far there is no precedence in post WW II history for seeing ‘lasting peace’ in any place entered by Washington. New Delhi is a novice to the game, spoiling its prospects and credibility by adopting genocidal route to the national question in the island.
Another difference is that Srimao’s SLFP in 1970 had two-third majority to deliver a constitution, right or wrong. Today’s Colombo, having not even simple majority, is not going to deliver anything of fundamental change other than serving outside interests, which itself is going to be a worse crisis than the 1972 constitution.
For the national question of the Tamil homeland covering nearly one-third of the island, the TNA with its 16 members is not going to achieve anything in the 225-strong congenitally genocidal parliament.
Ever since the British introduced universal enfranchisement under a unitary State in 1931, the fall of percentage in Tamil membership from the then State Council to today’s parliament would itself evidence to the structural genocide that took place over 9 decades. A single illustrative example is Trincomalee district.
This month’s elections was a long-prepared engineering of strategic partners and naturally that should show results to their satisfaction. But, what is going to be delivered only will soon tell whether bragging about getting endorsement from the people is premature or not.
Tamils, long-experienced in the deceptions of electoral politics and games of geopolitics, should be prepared for the next line of substantial polity in showing democratic will. The occasion would come soon.
In the given circumstances of Eezham Tamils there is much more noble to do on the ground than engaging in the deliberations of ‘set agendas’ in Colombo’s parliament, even though the historical responsibility of honestly reflecting the fundamentals of the struggle through the recognition of elected representation can’t be underestimated.
A new experience faced by Eezham Tamils since 2009 is the hijack capacity and leadership-simulating capacity of the ultimate culprits. If the nation is not careful enough in identifying and strengthening right political shades and personalities, it will be under the constant pressure of keeping vigilance and generating new leaders every time the old ones are hijacked or their simulation is exposed.
