Maithiripala denies devolution agreement with Tamils, Muslims

“We are firm in our stand that there is no place for Tamil Eelam demand and the Sri Lanka Army would not be withdrawn from the Northern Province,” said Common Presidential Candidate Maithiripala Sirisena on Monday. The statement comes after Mr Maithiripala has received unconditional backing from the TNA Parliamentary Group Leader Sampanthan and TNA's National List Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran. “My government will safeguard the unity and the territorial integrity of the country,” Mr. Sirisena added stating that he had not signed any agreement on devolution with Tamil and Muslim parties that are backing him.
Both the main presidential candidates, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithiripala Sirisena, have been talking about safeguarding the so-called territorial integrity and the unitary State of Sri Lanka.
The forthcoming SL presidential race has become a competition between the China, which is backing Mahinda Rajapaksa and the USA, attempting to bring about a regime change in the island.
The TNA hierarchy has been instructed by the external forces to back Maithiripala Sirisena. TNA's R. Sampanthan and former SL president Chandrika Kumaratunga have established a clandestine deal on TNA's contribution to the regime change, informed sources said.
At the same time, Mr Sirisena has been canvassing among the Sinhalese that he would not be withdrawing the troops from the North and that he would be opposed to any form of international investigations.
In order to maintain his stance among the Sinhalese voters, he has gone a step further in rejecting devolution of powers.
