‘SL President sanctioning 67-feet Buddha statue off Jaffna is act of aggression’

Latest photographs from Nayinaa-theevu islet off Jaffna reveal that the occupying Navy of genocidal Sri Lanka being deployed in the construction of controversial 67-feet Buddha statue disregarding the sentiments of the gagged Eezham Tamil population in the islet under military occupation. “Eezham Tamils have clearly articulated their objection to the controversial move. If the new regime, which has came to power using Tamils‘ votes, didn’t want to respect the sentiments of Eezham Tamils, and if the SL President has sanctioned this illegitimate project, he has just invoked an act of aggression, not only against the Eezham Tamils, but also against the 70-million Tamils of Tamil Nadu,” NPC Councillor Vinthan Kanagaratnam told TamilNet on Monday. The public in Jaffna will raise against this move, he said.

The All-Ceylon Hindu Sabha has also requested the SL President to stop the controversial project, Mr Kanagaratnam said.
SL President Maithiripala Sirisena, who has claimed ministerial command responsibility during the final onslaught in Vanni in 2009, is the SL Minister of Defence and Commander-in-Chief of occupying Colombo.

“Tamils are not opposed to Buddhism. We are a secular people. In fact, we safeguarded Buddhism in the past. Tamils oppose the occupying Sinhalese Buddhist supremacy,” the NPC Councillor said.
The controversial Buddha statue to be built at 67 feet is said to be the highest-ever Buddha statue to be constructed in the island. Why is this being erected in Nayinaa-theevu and not somewhere in South, asked NPC Councillor Kanagaratnam. There is already a Buddha statue and Vihara in the islet where Hindu and Islamic temples of historic significance are also located.
The Buddha statue to be constructed in Nayinaa-theevu is an attempt to superimpose Sinhala ownership to the entire island and it is a move to twist the historiography, he said.

The occupying Sinhala military has erected hundreds of Buddha statues in all the districts of Northern Province and has Sinhalicised a section of Mullaiththeevu through militarisation and Buddhicisation.
The Colombo regime, in a recent Gazette notification relating to the delimitation of wards 08 and 12 of Veala'nai Divisional Council, deployed a Sinhala term in Tamil as "Nagadeepam" ("Nagadeepa" in Sinhala) to denote the residential wards under three GS divisions in the islet.
Reacting to the Sinhalicisation move, the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) demanded the SL Minister of Provincial Councils & Local Government to continue to use the historical Tamil name of Nayinaa-theevu (Nainathivu) in the official records.
