Eastern University instructs assaulted Tamil student to attend investigations in Colombo

The Welfare branch of the Eastern University has instructed a Tamil student from Batticaloa, L. Sumeskanth, who was brutally assaulted by Sinhalese students on 24 May 2016 to appear for disciplinary investigations in Colombo to be held next week, informed student union sources at the main campus of the Eastern University in Vanthaa'rum-moolai in Batticaloa told TamilNet on Sunday. Sumeskanth was given very short notice to prepare his witnesses to attend for Colombo-based investigations and he has registered his objection to the Welfare branch, student leaders said questioning the motive behind conducting investigations in Colombo. The Sinhala students had attacked Mr Sumeskanth for posting and sharing a photo on Facebook from Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

The ethnic motivated assaults have taken place at both Vanthaa'ru-moolai and at the Trincomalee campus attached to it.

Similar ethnic violence and harassments against Tamil students were also reported at the University of Jaffna and on Saturday it took a worst turn as Sinhala students, numbering more than Tamil students at the Faculty of Science, clashed with Tamil students following a dispute over which form of welcome to be performed at a welcoming ceremony to new students.

Although at least 10 Sinhala students have been identified at the Eastern University to be involved in the repeated ethnic-motivated attacks against the Tamil students, academic and non-academic staff at the Eastern University, the Sinhala Police was trying to project the case as it was Tamil students who were inciting violence, Tamil student leaders said.

As reported earlier, one of the Sinhada students, engaged in ethnic-violence against the Tamil student at the Eastern University in Vanthaa'ru-moolai was trying to secure a medical attestation from a Sinhala doctor at a rural hospital at Chanthive'li, situated 3 km away from the University.

In the meantime, protesting academic and non-academic staff at the Eastern University have demanded disciplinary action against the violent Sinhala students.

Sinhala students were behaving as if there was an external power, which was above the administration of the University, to protect them from disciplinary actions and punishments, said Mr Ramanathan Rajasekaram, the president of the Union of Non-Academic Staff, in a recent interview to TamilNet.

Mr Rajasekaram said it was mostly the same Sinhala students who have been inciting violence and harassments against fellow Tamil students, academics and the workers at the Eastern University.

With the backing of Sinhala policemen from Ea'raavoor, a Sinhala student alleged of leading the attack against the Tamil student was admitted to a base hospital where a Sinhala doctor is employed on the following day of the incident on the ‘advice’ from the SL police.

Ea'raavoor police filed a case against the Tamil student, who was initially attacked by the Sinhala students.

The police filed the case by the Sinhala student first with complaint number B 286/2016 and intentionally delayed the complaint filed by Tamil student, giving it the next number, B 287/2016.

Both the students were detained and released on surety bail.

The Circuit Magistrate's Court at Ea'raavoor took the cases for hearing in June and the next hearings have been postponed to November 2016, legal sources said.

It is under these circumstances, the administration of the Eastern University has been instructed to send the students for Colombo-based disciplinary investigations.
