SL Navy proceeds with controversial Buddha statue in Nayinaa-theevu

Disobeying the interim order from the SL Government Agent of Jaffna district not to commence the construction of a controversial 61-feet Buddha statue at Nayinaa-theevu, the occupying Navy of genocidal Sri Lanka and the chief monk of ‘Nagadeepa Rajamaha Vihara’ at Nayinaa-theevu, have started the construction work on Sunday morning, the Tamil villagers at the islet complained. The monk, Ven Navadagala Paduma Kiththi Tissa Thero, treated by the SL Navy as a leader who stands above the executive SL President on Sinhala-Buddhist affairs of the entire island of Lanka, has fixed the timing for the commencement of construction work. SL Navy personnel were deployed in large numbers to suppress any protest from Tamil villagers at the islet located south west of Ooraath-thu'rai (Kayts) harbour.

The all too powerful monk is receiving full backing from the SL Ministry of Buddha Sasana while the civil authorities in Jaffna coming under the SL Central Government have been opposing the move.
The SL Government Agent in Jaffna, who has received several complaints from the residents of Nayinaatheevu has demanded a written evaluation from the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department, which comes under SL Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.
N. Vethanayagam, the GA of Jaffna district said his secretariat has not received any response from the SL Department of Coast Conservation. The move comes against the interim instruction from his secretariat, the GA said.
In the meantime, the Buddhist monk has approached the SL Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government to transfer the GA away from Jaffna District, informed sources said. The GA has earlier relieved a divisional secretary of Veala’nai who was forced to collaborate with the Sinhala Buddhist establishment to collaborate with the monk by transferring him, informed civil sources said.
The SL Governor to North has been actively promoting the construction of the Buddha statue. Mr Reginald Cooray, the colonial governor, has also gone on record stating that his administration wants to allocate 120 million rupees for the construction of the controversial Buddha statue.
SL Navy personnel from Kaarai-nakar base and Ooraath-thu’rai are deployed in the construction work. The SL Navy is particular about not allowing anyone to object the move.

The SL Navy and the monk were earlier exerting pressure on the local population to extend their support to the construction of the Buddha statue.
Northern Provincial councillors Balachandran Gajatheepan and Vinthan Kanagaratnam who were on a fact finding mission at the end of March this year, said the entire civil population was opposed to the construction of the Buddhist vihara.

In November 2015, SL Minister for Justice and Buddha Sasana Mr Wijedasa Rajapakshe who laid a foundation stone was encouraging Ven Navadagala Paduma Kiththi Tissa Thero to expand further the Buddhist vihara constructions in the island.
The Buddhist monk, Navadagala Thero, has also been refusing to pay taxes to Divisional Council while making money through operating modern boat services to the islet.
He charges from the visitors from South while saying the local villagers could travel free without tickets. But, in reality, the native people are reluctant to take the boat service operated by the hostile Sinhala Buddhist Establishment. The monk charges 50 rupee from the tourists. Around 3,000 - 4,000 tourists visit the island every day.
The private boat owners operating boat services for the transportation of native villagers have to pay 20 rupee per ticket to Divisional Council.
The Colombo regime, in a recent Gazette notification relating to the delimitation of wards 08 and 12 of Veala'nai Divisional Council, had deployed a Sinhala term in Tamil as "Nagadeepam" ("Nagadeepa" in Sinhala) to denote the residential wards under three GS divisions in the islet.
The Northern Provincial Council (NPC) has officially requested the SL Minister of Provincial Councils & Local Government to use the historical Tamil name of Nayinaa-theevu (Nainathivu) islet in the official records.
