Genocidal Sri Lanka insists full continuation of military occupation of Tamil Eelam

“We, as a government, will never remove any of the military camps established in the North and East to ensure security of the Tamil people as well as other people,” claimed Ruwan Wijewardene, the new Sri Lankan State Minister of Defence, who visited the Palaali headquarters of the occupying military in Jaffna. “We are not prepared to reduce the number of troops under any condition,” he said. Ruwan Wijewardene was addressing the SL military officers and soldiers calling them as ‘war heroes’ who ended the ‘frightening terrorism of Tigers’. Wijewardene is on a three-day trip to North and East, visiting the officers and soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) to boost their morale, informed military sources said.

At the same time, the Colombo government was telling the TNA that the Defence Minister was undertaking a trip to obtain advice from the military officers on the handing over of civilian lands back to the people.

However, the SL military has been going ahead with opening new hotels and other installations unhindered by any of the so-called political moves in Colombo, the sources further said. “In fact, the military stationed in North requires more lands,” a military source said. If any land is to be freed, that will be a decision based on the sole input from the field commanders, the visiting minister had already told the military officials in a closed-door meeting the source further said.

Only journalists who were having good rapport with the occupying military were allowed to visit Palaali when the SL minister was giving a public address to the officers and soldiers of the three armed forces in Sinhala.

“Soon after taking over the ministry of defence and receiving the blessings of the Sangha and other religious leaders, the first thing I did was to visit our war heroes who got wounded and disabled while fighting to defeat terrorism. I am extremely happy for being able to meet you all afterwards as the next important step,” Wijewardene told the SL soldiers at Palaali on Friday.

“Dear War Heroes, what the new government working under the leadership of President Maithiripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe want is to work for the betterment of the country that you won over for us,” he said.

“As a government, we don't have any intention to ignore the most important topic that is known as 'national security.' Instead, what we want is to rectify the past weaknesses and enhance national security. In order to enhance national security, I believe it is highly important to understand your needs and your opinions too. [...] We are committed to restore the due respect for your services. We consider that protecting professional dignity while increasing the professional standards of the armed forces as one of our main priorities,” he further told the SL military officers and soldiers.

“During the recent past, there were widespread campaigns of misinformation, which is well known to you all War Heroes and the general public. I would like to request all those who are involved in such campaigns, not to do opportunistic politics with the sensitive matters involving national security. We, as a government, will never remove any of the military camps established in the North and East to ensure security of the Tamil people as well as other people [...] We are not prepared to reduce the number of troops under any condition.”

“I believe that due to our newly enhanced relationship with the western countries, we will get more opportunities to link our armed forces with the UN peace keeping forces in the future,” Wijewardene further said.

Response coming from Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island:

Rejecting the existence of two militaries within the strategically important island marked by global power contentions, was the real idea behind Washington and New Delhi jointly crushing the Tamil militant struggle of self-defence in favour of the ‘majority military’.

The military outlook of the powers over the island didn’t care the genocide, and even now don’t care the Sinhala military having congenital intent of genocide continuing forever.

It is this outlook that gives confidence to the genocidal SL military and to its new defence minister to come out with assertions of arrogance.

All now want to treat the country of Eezham Tamils in the naked conventional fashion of treating any ‘conquered’ country, while paying lip service to ‘accountability’ and political solutions. Because, even in the midst of the crime of outlook and crime against humanity committed by them, the buffalo-skinned policy planners sitting at the desks of certain Establishments don’t want to take the trouble of coming out with innovative and justifiable models, as the affected people are only Tamils.

There are non-military models that would serve the interests of nations as such of the size and situation of Eezham Tamils as well as the interests of global military powers.

The nation of Eezham Tamils doesn’t need a military. It is a liability for its rehabilitation and regional or international interaction. Eezham Tamils only need an international guarantee for their existence as a nation that doesn’t threaten the military interests of any powers.

Those who spearhead the political struggle of Eezham Tamils may have to conceive certain specific models to deal with the powers on the military question too. It is practically of foremost importance.

Eezham Tamils could never accept the model of Washington, New Delhi or Beijing grooming and deploying the genocidal Sinhala military as their neo-lascarin force for the ‘consolidation’ of their imperialist designs over the island. Let the Sinhala nation confine its ‘heroic’ military within its bounds, as now there is no Tamil military to challenge it. Or let them send the obnoxious military for the further discredit and ruin of the UN. But Eezham Tamils could no more tolerate the military occupation model outlook of the powers, with which lies the ultimate accountability. This has to be specifically told to New Delhi that has ‘military to military’ relationship with genocidal Sri Lanka.
