Attacked Tamil students in Trinco campus under pressure not to talk to media

The administration of Trincomalee Campus at the Eastern University has instructed the students not to talk to media. On Monday, the campus was temporarily shut down to avoid situation getting out of control. The administration has also appointed a three-member committee with the instruction not to bring out the racial motive behind the episode. The attacked students said they had complained for a long time about the hate crime tendency, but the university administration has ignored the early warnings. On Monday, the Sinhala students started to claim that the attack was in retaliation to ‘bullying behaviour’ from the Tamil students. The Tamil students from the Unit of Siddha Medicine have provided names of ten Sinhala students from the departments of Communication and Management to the Campus administration and the SL Police. No action has been taken against them, they said.

Nirodha Chanaka, Prabath Chathuranka, Mahesh Kumara Hetiarachi, Kasun Sampath, Hasan Seneviratne, Sajith Chamara, Malinda Madusanga, Theekshana, Dharikan and Sumuthu were the 10 Sinhala students blamed by the Tamil students as being involved in the racially motivated hate crime against them.

Apart from them, there were around 100 Sinhalese students who were mobilised to assault the Tamil students with batons and iron rods on Thursday evening last week.

Ilangkumaran Anpalakan from Trincomalee (final year), Paikiriyan Sivakumar from Trincomalee (3rd year), Vithushan Krishnamoorthy from Akkaraip-pattu (3rd year), Anosan Arasaratnam from Kalmunai (3rd year), S. Surendran from Navalap-piddi (2nd year), V. Sumanthan from Jaffna (2nd year) Pirivintharaj from Akkaraippattu (2nd year), S. Tharshan from Batticaloa (2nd year) and A. Selvisan from Batticaloa (2nd year) were the nine Tamil students who were admitted for medical treatment at Nilaave'li hospital following the assault.

“There was a systematic pattern of racially motivated hate crime”, an academic who was attached to the Trincomalee campus told TamilNet on condition of anonymity.

The academic was prepared to testify only in front of an international investigating body that has no structural link to the judiciary of the SL State.

“If we are going to secure a proper academic environment in the North and East, there should be parallel institution controlling the affairs of the universities in the North and East. The sovereignty of Tamils in determining their education is gone a long time ago,” the Tamil academic said.

“Just look at the ethnic composition of the University Grant Commission (UCG), which runs the University affairs from Colombo. Five members are Sinhalese and there are one symbolic Tamil and Muslim,” the academic further told TamilNet.
