Tamil civil groups under pressure to dilute their investigation demand

[TamilNet, Monday, 26 October 2015, 23:37 GMT]
A section of so-called human rights activists from South are exerting pressure on civil groups in North-East, including the Citizens' Committees, women groups, missing persons groups to take part in a deceptive move being organised in Colombo by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera with the aim of projecting their participation as giving consent to Colombo's domestic investigations. The majority of the participants are from South. Ms Nimalka Fernando, a Sinhala Christian and the president of the International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR), has joined Mr Samaraweera in protecting the interests of the new regime in Colombo, a citizens' committee leader in North told TamilNet on Monday. The Tamil civil groups met on Saturday in Jaffna to discuss how to face the move, which is scheduled on 29 October in Colombo.

“If human rights defenders like Dr Nimalka Fernando want to prove their credibility whether they embody the very best qualities of humanity, this is the time for them to prove that by recognising Tamil genocide which predates the emergence of the LTTE,” a prominent Tamil activist who took part in the preparatory meeting in Jaffna told TamilNet on condition of anonymity citing harassments and manipulations originating from Colombo.

“They should also recognise the claim of the right to self-determination not only on the basis as a remedial justice to the decades-long oppression, but also as a rightful claim of the nation of Eezham Tamils, possessing historical and earned sovereignty to rule themselves as a nation in the island,” the Tamil civil activist further said.

Tamil activists said the SL ‘Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints regarding Missing Persons’ (PCICMP) has totally failed to earn the trust of the Tamil people not only during the Rajapaksa regime, but also during the Maithiripala regime.

For months, the PCICMP has only managed to investigate 200 cases out of the 2,600 complaints registered from North. Now the group wants to resume sittings again claiming that the group would expedite the remaining 2,400 cases within a few days.

SL Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is now trying to create four different commissions to continue the legacy of such domestic investigations with deceptive ‘international’ and ‘Tamil’ participation, Tamil rights activists in North commented.
