The Great Heroes' Day
Tamil Eelam's National Heroes Days are celebrated for three days
ending November 27, which is the day the first LTTE fighter gave his
life for the freedom of the Tamil Eelam
27th November was made Great Heroes Day from 1989 onwards to
commemorate the martyrdom of Lt. Shankar (Sathiyanathan). On November
27, 1982. Lt. Shankar became the first to lay down his life and has
been made a collective focal point to re-experience and honour his
martyrdom. In Tamil "Great Heroes Day” is called Maveerar Nal.
Emulating Lt. Shankar over 30.000 LTTE freedom fighters have attained
martyrdom in the struggle for Tamil Eelam. During the final phase of
Eelam War 1V in May, 2009 thousands LTTE fighters and hundreds of LTTE
attained martyrdom in fighting.
Today November 27, is declared a National Day in anticipation of the
birth of Nation-State of Tamil Eelam. Its purpose is to channel
veneration of all LTTE martyrs. It prevents commemorative celebrations
from being dispersed all over the year.
Lately Great Heroes' Day is celebrated as eluzhi Nal. This expression
has the double meaning of "Day of edification" and "Day of rising".
The participant may choose either, one, or better both meanings,
according to his or her understanding and liking. "Great Heroes' Day"
is indeed a day of mourning, of agony, but it is transformed into a
Day of edification and, or, rising.
LTTE Leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran was very close to Lt. Shankar. The
martyrdom of Lt. Shankar was a painful experience for LTTE leader
Veluppillai Prabhakaran. Lt. Shankar is made a collective focal point
by recognizing his supreme sacrifice. The commemoration of the Great
Heroes Day is not just a ritual or event, it is a cultural monument
fit for a martial society.
The Great Heroes Day is celebrated for three consecutive days. The
celebration begins at 9.00 AM followed by the hoisting of the National
flag (Tiger flag) and singing of the National Anthem. The entire Tamil
Eelam having raised and put on beauty shall shine in fullness.
During Great Heroes Day cultural performances are staged. It can be a
drama, dance, song or all three, very often combined.
During these celebrations people light traditional oil lamps at home
and in public places and ceremonies are held in which Tamil Eelam's
national flag is proudly raised. People also engage in prayers for
their nation, speeches are delivered by prominent people and the
portraits of fallen freedom fighters are suitably garlanded.
There are many well known poets writing in the spirit of freedom and
liberty. Poet Puthuvai Ratnathurai, Poet Kasi Anandan, Poet
Subramaniya Bharati are well known poets who by their lyrics inspire
the fighters in their thirst for Tamil Eelam. Many a militant fighter
knew songs by theses poets by heart.
The lyrics of Poet Puthuvai Ratnathurai and Poet Kasi Anandan are
called pulippatukal (Tiger songs), but they continue a tradition of
parani patukal (praising war) i.e. a genre of songs that glorifies the
hero who killed elephants. This genre was popularised by the Dravidian
movement
Bharathi was a poet who actively participated in the independence
struggle of India, His , poetic themes displayed concern for the poor,
the welfare of the common man, adoration of the ancients, confidence
in the future generation, concern for women's liberation, children's
welfare, and human values, but above all for India's freedom from
slavery under colonial power. Accamillai Accamillai is the name of a
poem created in 1914 by Bharati. The poem recited in Tamil during
Great Heroes Day celebrations goes like this (in the translation of K
G Seshadri):
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all,
    * Though all the world be ranged against us,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though we are slighted and scorned by others,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though fated to a life of beggary and want,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all,
    * Though all we owned and held as dear be lost,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though the corset breasted cast their glances,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though friends should feed us poison brew,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though spears reeking flesh come and assail us,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
    * Though the skies break and fall on the head,
    * Fear we not, fear we not, fear we not at all!
The Great Heroes Day will be celebrated in grand style this year as
well by Tamil people all over world in honour of the LTTE freedom
fighters.
