JUSU opposes police cases against Tamil students, SL military steps up surveillance

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 26 July 2016, 23:38 GMT]
One of the Sinhala students, who has been admitted for ‘prolonged’ medical treatment in South following the recent violent clash between the Sinhala and Tamil students at the University of Jaffna, has reportedly named 4 Tamil students as the attackers and the SL police has been trying to get the SL Judiciary to issue arrest warrants against them, informed sources at the University of Jaffna told TamilNet on Tuesday. In the meantime, leftist Sinhala circles in Colombo have blamed the SL regime for trying to charge Tamil students under the provisions of ‘Prevention of Terrorism Act’. Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) leaders told TamilNet that the Military Intelligence of the occupying military of genocidal Sri Lanka has stepped up surveillance against Tamil student activists in Jaffna.

The SL Military Intelligence and the Defence Ministry in Colombo were advising the Sinhala students to refrain from attending the University in Jaffna while Tamil students were being subjected to harassment.

Mr Thisinthan, a leader in the JUSU was falsely accused by the Sinhala students under the influence of the SL military intelligence, JUSU leaders said. Thisinthan has already appeared at the Court and obtained advanced bail. In the meantime, three other Tamil students, two from Jaffna and one from Mannaar district were to receive instructions from the SL Court to attend for a hearing on 01st of August, legal sources said. The students have not received any written instruction from the SL Court in Jaffna, according to JUSU.

The Tamil student leader has made a complaint naming 4 Sinhala students after Judge N. Satheeskaran questioned him why he didn’t complain at the police against the assault.

Colombo should restrain its military intelligence and ‘terrorist’ division of SL Police if it is serious about resolving the dispute in a civilized manner, the JUSU leaders said adding that the ball was in Colombo’s court.
