Diaspora teen-ager records the Vanni she witnessed

Diaspora teen-ager records the Vanni she witnessed

[TamilNet, Sunday, 06 October 2013, 23:37 GMT]
“Was I a Stranger in My Homeland? Has One Two Lives?” is the title of a book by a young Norwegian Eezham Tamil girl, Malavi Sivakanesan. The book tells the story of how she, as an 8-year-old girl visiting Vanni, enjoyed playing in the sands of her homeland to how she, 6 years later at the age of 14, powerlessly witnessed from Norway the unfolding genocidal onslaught on the coastal strip of the same Vanni in 2009. With a lot of questions on why the global Establishments didn’t do anything to stop the genocidal onslaught despite hundreds of thousands of Tamils, including the children of her age, took to the streets staging demonstrations in an unprecedented way in the West, to why the Tamil youth are still struggling with questions on what is going on and what they should do, she publishes the book at the age of 17.

Was I a Stranger in My Homeland
In an interview to TamilNet this weekend, she said that Norway, which had an important role in the conflict, has not done enough for the Tamils to get justice. The Norwegian politicians should listen more to the Tamils and understand what the Tamils are going through and look at it objectively.

In the course of writing the book, she had met former Norwegian State Secretary Vidar Helgesen and the former Special Envoy and later Development Minister of Norway, the failed Norwegian peace broker Erik Solheim.

She appreciated her interaction with Mr Vidar Helgesan, who according to Malavai, understood what she had to say. But, Mr Erik Solheim, who was preoccupied with finding faults with the Tamil Tigers and described the LTTE leader Mr Pirapaharan as a ‘complicated person’ didn’t strike well with her that she didn’t find it appropriate to include that conversation in her book.

On the diaspora youth of her age, she said the youth abroad, despite their emotional attachment, have a limited amount of knowledge when it comes to the conflict in their homeland. The youth need more workshops where they can discuss, debate and learn more about the conflict in order to shape their role in providing leadership in the diaspora, she said.

Ms Nithiya Nareshkumar, a medical student at the University of Oslo interviewed Ms Malavi Sivakanesan.
Was I a Stranger in My Homeland
Malavi, describing her two visits to Tamil Eelam in 2003 and 2004 with her family, goes in detail in her book describing her experience witnessing his family’s meeting with the LTTE leader Velupillai Pirapaharan, who was visiting the dental clinic and the training programme conducted by her father on behalf of the charity, the Norwegian Tamils Health Organisation (NTHO) during the times of the peace process.

The book that records a diaspora child experiencing her homeland under Tamil rule and how she experienced her interactions with the Tiger akkaas (sisters) and a’n’naas (brothers) and the maamaas (uncles), also narrates the story of her friends; a Tamil boy, who had gone to Vanni from Norway, joined the Tigers and survived the genocidal onslaught on Vanni and the love story of one of her friends in London, a story that also touches on the cultural divide of East and West.

The book, published through Xlibris, a US-based self-publishing company, is to be released on 19 October in London.

A passage from her book follows:

“One evening, just before it got dark, an old skinny man waddled through the gate with a wagon full of nongus. He wore a loincloth which was fastened around his waist, pleated neatly and draped between his legs. He was quite dark, and his upper body was bare. Though the wagon looked heavy, he did not seem to have a hard time manoeuvring, probably because he was used to it.

“Before I go further, let me tell you what a nongu looks like. It is a fruit with a hard shell and three eyelets on top and is full of white jelly-like pulp in the centre. Even though it is not exactly my favourite fruit, I must admit that it is extremely tasty. The man then skillfully cut the top off the fruits one by one with his sickle-like cutter. I could see that he was adept at the task, and it was extremely exciting watching him work. He distributed the fruit to everyone around. I was slightly confused about the right way of eating the nongu and waited for someone to explain the next step. Immediately, a Tamil Tiger behind offered to help and kindly showed me the art of eating them. At first I made a mess, but as soon as I finished, I asked for another, then another, and so on. I ate to my heart’s content. I had six nongus in a single sitting which is rather unusual for a little girl. In Norway, at the most, I often get to eat overripe apples and pears. Canned tropical fruits and vegetables sold in exotic food shops in Norway can hardly compare to the vendors who come peddling the fresh variety, door to door in Tamil Eelam.”

writers in UK criticize India’s role in genocide of Eezham Tamils

Eezham Tamil writers in UK criticize India’s role in genocide of Eezham Tamils

[TamilNet, Sunday, 27 January 2013, 22:32 GMT]
UK based Eezham Tamil writers and journalists criticized the role of India in abetting the genocide of the Eezham Tamils and shielding the genocide perpetrators at book release function at London on Sunday. Speaking at the release of the book “Thookkuk-kayittil: Rajiv padukolai nijam” written by Tiruchi Velusami and compiled by P. Egalaivan, the Eezham Tamil writers expressed their opinions on how under the cover of eliminating the LTTE, India and other world powers effectively covered up the genocide of the Eezham Tamils.

The book was released by Eezham Tamil writers and was received by journalist Sugi Gopiratnam, senior activists Kalabathi and Sathyaseelan.

According to veteran writer and activist Ithayachandran, the ‘terrorist’ tag was used by the world powers and India on Pirapaharan’s LTTE because they refused to comprise on Tamil’s historical right to self-determination, emphasising that this can never mean flawed concepts like ‘internal self-determination’.

Gopi Ratnam, senior editor of ‘Oru Paper’, talking about the geopolitical games played by US and India, said that some people had a wrong opinion that since the LTTE is not there, India would tilt in the favour of the Eezham Tamils. He opined that India’s geopolitical interests compelled to take a foreign policy that was against the interests of the Eezham Tamils.

NESoHR book on Tamil massacres prior to 2009 published in German

NESoHR book on Tamil massacres prior to 2009 published in German

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 October 2012, 23:21 GMT]
A compilation of large-scale massacres from 1956 to 2008, brought out by the North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESoHR), has been translated to German. The book, “Damit wir nicht vergessen” will be launched at Frankfurt Book Fair this month. The publication has an important historical dimension as it presents the massacres prior to 2009 genocidal onslaught in a historical dimension, says Emeritus Professor Peter Schalk in Uppsala, Sweden, sending an introductory note to TamilNet. “In a shortened time perspective those violations of human rights [in 2009] may appears as an occasional and random deviation of a particular Government of Sri Lanka or as committed by individual offenders. We have good reasons to assume that this massacre by the government represents a planned cultural and physical genocide over a long time,” he further says adding that a Chinese translation is desirable.

“The Chinese people should know to whom in Sri Lanka is transferred their acquired surplus value through hard labour,” says Professor Peter Schalk.

The data collection for the period from 1956 to 2002, had been carried out by the Statistical Centre for North East (SNE) under the de-facto Tamil Eelam administration, headquartered at Ki'linochchi in Vanni, in 2003 after the signing of the ceasefire agreement in 2002, which allowed relatively free access to all areas of the Tamil homeland. Affidavits were also obtained by the SNE from the surviving victims through the village officers (GS).

NESoHR book in German
The data collection is not a complete document on the large-scale massacres prior to 2002 as it did not include those who had moved to places outside the Tamil homeland. Also missing are information about families that were killed en masse because no one were left in the villages to report about them.

Founded in June 2004, the North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESoHR), which emerged as the de-facto human rights arm of the Tamil civil administration, brought out the compilation in part one in 2007. The publication, which listed nearly 115 different incidents of killings and large-scale massacres, did not include the war crimes committed by the IPKF.

The IPKF massacres, documented by the NESoHR were however brought out in a separate publication, “In the Name of Peace: IPKF Massacres of Tamils in Sri Lanka”, by Delhi Tamil Students Union in April 2011.

The NESoHR had its own mechanism of documenting the atrocities and massacres and was issuing a number of in-depth reports of human rights violations that took place after 2002. However, the NESoHR was forced to stop functioning in late 2008 due to the genocidal onslaught on Vanni. These reports were included in the publication “Massacres of Tamils 1956-2008” published by Manitham Publishers in 2009.

Rev Fr M X Karunaratnam, the chairman of the NESoHR was assassinated in a Claymore attack by a Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) of the Sri Lanka Army in April 2008.

Earlier, two of the founder members of the human rights body, former parliamentarian Ariyanayagam Chandra Nehru from Ampaa'rai and parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham had been assassinated by SL military intelligence.

NESoHR’s work can be studied at close range in Dr. N Malathy's recent work: “A Fleeting Moment in my Country. The Last Years of the LTTE DE-Facto State.”

Malathy's work also takes the reader beyond 2008, to the “worst genocidal actions in the modern history of Ilam, of the annihilation of tens of thousands civilian Tamils while fleeing and while pining away in concentration camps in 2009,” Peter Shalk writes in his note on the translation of NESoHR compilation into German language.

The official launching of “Damit wir nicht vergessen...” will take place at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 14 October 2012 at 4 pm (Halle 3.1, Stand A 136).

Tamils de-facto state chronicled in new book

Tamils de-facto state chronicled in new book

[TamilNet, Saturday, 04 August 2012, 21:43 GMT]
While the global powers of all persuasions—the USA, Russia, China and India—each driven by their own realpolitik concerns and self- interests continue to dismiss Tamil liberation cause and struggle, a new book written by a Diaspora Tamil engaged in human rights work in the Tamil-controlled area of Vanni until the Sri Lanka's "Crime of the Century" at Mu'l'livaaykkaal, provides a compelling insider’s look at the motivations, issues and complexities of this internationally abetted genocide; the entire text is based on first hand observation and includes sociological insights based on these first hand observations, says the publisher, Clarity Press in the US.

Book Cover
Book Cover
The book contains a foreword by Indian academic and social justice activist Radha d'Souza.

The author, N. Malathy, is member of the Eezham Tamil Diaspora and a naturalised New Zealand citizen who has lived in New Zealand for four decades. She graduated from Peradeniya in Electrical Engineering and holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

She spent four years in the country of Eezham Tamils, in Vanni under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), from 2005 till 2009. During this period she worked in a human rights body, a women’s organization, and an orphanage. Her experiences spanned working with civilian institutions in the de facto state of the Eezham Tamils, preparing documentation for peace talks, documenting systematic human rights violations by the Sri Lankan military and working on a project to raise awareness of domestic violence.

"Can the readers who did not experience this [the war] imagine what it is like to watch the complete destruction of one’s country: the physical destruction, the destruction of the governance structures, the complete dispersal of its people, and massacres on a massive scale? Has there ever been such complete destruction of a country in history? The only reason why it is not seen as such is because my country was only in the minds of its people, but was not recognized by the global system of states," the author asks.

Short excerpts from the book follow:
    LTTE members togetherness
It must be said here, however, that among the activities that all LTTE members, both men and women, enjoyed most was reminiscing about events of the past. Watching them enjoying such conversations, one would think that they were the happiest people on earth because the interactions would be filled with laughter. They would discuss dead comrades, past battles, instances of near capture by the Lankan Military, receiving punishment from superiors, etc. But all of these subjects were discussed with a sense of humor. One SLMM member, who had noticed this without being able to understand the language, once commented that for a set of liberation fighters they did spend an awful lot of time talking and laughing. All of them indeed carried with them a great deal of painful memories and this, it seemed, was their therapy.

    Disability service
One of the outstanding features of Vanni society was the degree of integration of disabled people into the mainstream. They could be seen actively participating in many spheres, carrying out work with grit and amazing agility. People with one arm would ride motorbikes with heavy loads behind them on their motorbikes. You would hardly have known that some people you worked with were missing a leg from below the knee. Disability had been normalized. Serving these people was the only prosthetic-fitting service in Vanni, Venpuraa. This also expanded its service with the introduction of new technology. A common phrase one heard even prior to the Mullivaikaal genocide was about so and so having a piece of shrapnel in some part of their body. Many people lived with such pieces in their body and suffered varying degrees of pain as a result. Visiting medical experts did their best to remove the ones causing the most severe pain.

    Women
Though I did not have the statistics, just observing the number of women on the streets during peak hours dressed for work, it was obvious that a greater percentage of women in Vanni went to work outside the home. There were also more women in civilian clothes riding motorbikes on Vanni roads compared to the rest of the island. Women, both LTTE members as well as civilians, occupied the public space in large numbers. They were very visible on the roads and in the LTTE institutions. This gave Vanni a uniquely pro-woman character, which was absent elsewhere on the island. ...

It was a unique kind of feminism, created by connecting the majority of women living all over Vanni, from all walks of life, for public action regarding women and children in need of help.

Eezham Tamils await dividends to come from Mahendran’s book

Eezham Tamils await dividends to come from Mahendran’s book

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 07 February 2012, 22:23 GMT]
“It is not a mere documentation sharing opinion, but it is on the demand for justice by the genocide-surviving Eezham Tamils, the plight of whom has not been experienced by any other society in the world,” writes Communist Party of India stalwart S. Mahendran, in the introduction to his book on the Vanni War. He encapsulates the global shame in a nutshell when he says “Mu’l’li-vaaykkaal is the heroes’ land in the 21st century world, where life was the weapon to claim one’s land.” The book in Tamil, “Veezhveanen’ru Ninaiththaayoa” (Have you thought that I would fall), brought out in December 2011 by veteran media publications Vikatan, Chennai, is on hot sales and has already found overwhelming appreciation among Tamil readers all over the world. Any good book is eventually judged by the impact it makes on society and Eezham Tamils await that dividend to come from the Tamil-speaking world.

Veezhveanen'ru ninaiththaayoa

Mahendran has taken the task to his heart in writing the book and that is the secret of his success.

“When my heart was stressed by bleeding while writing this, I thought of stopping it. But then I thought of the determination of the people who had stopped breathing at Mu'l'livaaykkaal, and the debate that thought evoked within me gave me the determination to continue writing,” Mahendran says.

A significant feature of the book is that Mahendran orientates it entirely from the people’s point of view, which strengthens his moral right in proclaiming the truth that there was a planned genocide and it is an immediate question for the humanity to attend to.

“Resulting from ethnic animosities harboured for centuries, Mu’l’livaaykkaal was a planned genocide to finish off everything without witnesses,” Mahendran writes. Many of his political contemporaries, academics and media empires in India still suppress their conscience from proclaiming the truth.

A revealing example portrayed in the book showing the depth of the genocidal attitude is the plight of a group of orphan children looked after by a Catholic priest. The priest who was looking after 157 children saw 58 of them killed in shelling. When he managed to reach the barbed-wire camp with the remaining children, the SL military first took away the priest from the crying children and he died in custody according to the SL military. The Tamil children were later taken away to a centre in the South, despite the pleadings of the Church to hand over the children to it.

The book, first serialised in the Chennai-based Tamil weekly Aanantha Vikadan, was stopped in the middle. The concerned pages were torn off by genocidal Sri Lanka before the weekly was allowed for circulation in the island. Truth reaching the people was frightening for many in India and even in Tamil Nadu. However, Aanantha Vikadan brought out a complete publication later.

Mahendran’s book is the first substantial publication in Tamil, narrating the Vanni War

* * *

The reviewer was recently stunned by the naivety of an educated Tamil youth from Chennai who innocently asked whether there are still threats for Tamils in the island even after the LTTE had been crushed.

The reviewer couldn’t help comparing the awareness and emotions Tamil Nadu and its media evoked and showed during the liberation of Bangladesh.

It is against this backdrop, Mahendran writing this book addressed to the Tamil-speaking world with facts, insight, and in a lucid narrative style, makes an immense contribution.

Most of the frames brought out in the book by the author are not new to the Eezham Tamils in the island or even in the diaspora. They were living through it for ages. But there is a Tamil-speaking world outside of them that needs to know the basics.

Perhaps, it is the reality – the dearth of understanding among the general public in Tamil Nadu on the basic facts about what had happened – that might have made Mahendran to confine to simplification of the picture: The details and gravity of the genocide – the extent to which state in Sri Lanka controlled by the Sinhala nation had gone in doing away with the long-struggling nation of Eezham Tamils.

Passing references and remarks evenly distributed throughout the book show that the author is fully aware, and that he has also attempted to imply to the readers, about the India-involved international conspiracy risking even the genocide in engineering a dangerous paradigm for the world humanity.

But the focus of historiography falling on the genocidal and agent state of Sri Lanka, overshadows the role of the larger forces at work and master culprits in the Establishments of the powers, who have not only engineered and allowed the genocide but also sustain it after the war.

The activities of India, USA, China and many others in the aftermath of the war clearly show why, to achieve what, and to achieve it for whom, the genocidal war was conducted.

* * *

Accounts of the tragedies befallen on Eezham Tamils (Eezhaththuk Ka’n’neerk Kathaika’l) have long been written and filmed in Tamil Nadu, after every spurt of violence against Tamils in the island. But the impact being shallow to counter the designs of State in India was explicitly evident during the Vanni War.

A possible reason for the past attitude could be that whatever had happened was projected and seen as the problem of another people, of another country–even though the people affected were Tamil brethren.

But there is a difference now. This time, the deceit and challenges have directly been addressed to the people of Tamil Nadu, pricking the self-respect of every one of them.

Besides, the paradigm set by the powers including India, show that whatever has happened to the nation of Eezham Tamils could happen to any of the nations in the region and elsewhere, whether through genocide, through setting peoples against one another, or through any other means. In our immediate region, if we are unguarded it could happen even to the Sinhalese, Tamils of Tamil Nadu, Malayalis or the Maldivians as well.

On Tuesday, inspiring the entire region, the people of Maldives have successfully demonstrated how a people’s uprising could make a regime to bow down, despite manipulations and props of powers.

No remedy for Eezham Tamils could be achieved unless there is collective struggle directed against the real culprits and unless the message is clear that none of them could achieve their interests without due justice delivered.

Mahendran writes he was stunned by the quest for justice shown by the diaspora.

But the real issue we face is not confined to the Eezham Tamils in the island or diaspora alone. It is the issue of every one of the peoples in the region. Tamil Nadu has the prime responsibility in playing a role.

We need a new historiography going beyond State to bring in an awareness among our people on the new realities of imperialistic nature that have come into our region.

Such a historiography that is not alien to the Marxist ideology of Mahendran would have helped him to focus the issue beyond genocide or war crimes accountability, into another level, where there is no inhibition in proclaiming liberation or independence to Eezham Tamils.

Liberation of Eezham Tamils is a paradigm-setting global test case that has to be upheld in response to new imperialism’s genocidal paradigm experimented in the island. This is a universal issue going well beyond the national confrontation of Tamils and Sinhalese, the right to protection of a people from genocide, or the right to self-determination of a nation.

* * *

If the victors compose literature to parade triumphalism the vanquished also will have their literature to harbour the spirit of struggle with determination, Mahendran concludes his book, comparing the euphoria of one and the plight of the other in the island.

Tamil literary heritage, right from the times of Chilappathikaaram, has a long tradition in making epics out of tragedies, political injustices and social injustices. The tradition continued into folklore, such as the stories of Mathurai Veeran, Kaaththavaraayan, A’n’namaar etc. We even made demi gods out of them either to take psychological revenge on the oppressors or to inspire the spirit of struggle against injustice. In modern times they also became themes for successful entertainment films.

But the inspirations are meaningful only when there are focussed political efforts.

“Veezhveanen’ru Ninaiththaayoa” by a political leader of a progressive party cannot stop merely at documentation, as he himself has said in his introduction.

ஜேரிட் டயமண்ட் எழுதிய ‘The rise and fall of the third chimpanzee’ இனிய நூல்.
