Colombo harasses Senthuran’s family, insults Tamil political prisoners

Unidentified Sinhala operatives in civil cloths, claiming as intelligence wing officers of the occupying Sri Lankan military, as investigators from the ‘Terrorist’ Investigation Division (TID) and as police officers attached to SL Criminal Investigation Department (CID), have been continuously and systematically harassing the grieving family of 18-year-old Tamil student Senthuran Rajeswaran, who committed suicide last week in Jaffna, relatives of the family told TamilNet on Friday. The A/L student killed himself a day before Eezham Tamils observed Tamil Eelam Heroes Day. Senthuran left behind a letter demanding immediate release of Tamil political prisoners languishing in the prisons of genocidal Sri Lanka.
Colombo’s investigators were seeking the ‘political sources’ and the ‘motivating factors’ that could have influenced Senthuran.
Senthuran was characterised as a silent and humble student who had a keen interest in media studies.
K. Abinath, a classmate of him told TamilNet that Senthuran, coming from agricultural background, also excelled in sports. Although he had a good record in 100 meters sprint, he was not interested in proceeding to the finals as he was not of the type interested in projecting himself in the games, Abinath told TamilNet.
While other students appeared stressed before exams, Senthuran would be calm and, will pass the tests without any difficulty, Abinath said adding that Senthuran had a keen interest in media studies and that was the reason why he chose Kokkuvil Hindu College.
Senthuran’s suicide has shocked many students causing them to ask the reason why, Abinath said.
Senthuran’s family is dependent on cultivating bananas for the livelihood. The family is living in a temporary hut located on Raja Veethi. His eldest sister is attending the University of Jaffna.
A 23-year-old student, Balendran Prakash, who photographed Senthuran’s last letter before it was seized by the SL police and passed the copy of the letter to others, was detained by the SL police earlier this week and was subjected to interrogations, news sources in Jaffna said.
However, the SL police has confirmed the handwriting of the letter as that of Senthuran after comparing the letter with his workbooks, the sources further said.
In the meantime, Colombo has ridiculed the struggle of the Tamil political prisoners by promising solutions and bringing them to SL courts in different districts, where they were instructed to plead guilty for alleged ‘crimes’. In return, the prisoners would be ‘rewarded’ with few more months of imprisonment, which was to be followed by at least one-year of incarceration, which is known as ‘military rehabilitation’.
Many of the prisoners discovered that they have been charged with different cases at different districts. Even if they were to get lighter prison terms at one court, other pending cases in different districts are likely to add many more months of prison terms, legal sources in Jaffna said.
The Tamil prisoners of war and political prisoners, who have waged fast-unto-death campaign twice in recent weeks told TamilNet on Friday that they would announce their decision on the next phase of the protests on December 15 if Colombo regime fails to honour their demands.
The prisoners are expected to make a public call to Tamil activists in the homeland and the Tamil diaspora to intensify the global campaign to get them freed from the genocidal Sri Lankan prisons.
It is under these circumstances, the ‘counter-insurgency’ operatives of the lascarine Sinhala military have been ‘disturbed’ by the emerging political awareness among the younger generation of Tamils in the homeland, EPDP sources close to the SL military said.
