American Corner’s “Kozhampa Yaathraa” in Jaffna

American Corner’s “Kozhampa Yaathraa” in Jaffna

Those who were reading ITAK’s Suthanthiran newspaper of 1960s and 1970s would recollect how the weekly had to regularly fight against Colombo’s corruption and Sinhalicisation of Tamil language, stemming from contemptuous attitude of “Perun-thesiyam” (i.e., the genocidal nationalism in other words, and even today we have some ‘Marxists’ who see the Tamil struggle as “Ku'run-thesiyam”, i.e., narrow nationalism). After the three decades interlude of Tamil militant struggle, nothing has changed, except for the fact that the USA is now leading Colombo’s outlook of linguistic genocide, commented Tamil activists in Jaffna citing “Kozhampa Yaathraa” call of “American Corner” in Jaffna.
Kozhampa Yaathra
The call in corrupt Tamil, meaning “marching to Colombo” (it could also mean ‘pilgrimage’ to Colombo in Tamil), has been organised by “Youth Yathra Program” (spelt in American English), in collaboration with American Corner, with the slogan “Be the Change Making Green Leader to Combat Climate Change.”

The ‘program’ is organising training sessions to “empower Green Youth Leaders” at the American Corner in Kandy and in Jaffna as well as in the Samadhi Development Foundation in Matara, according to an invitation by Sinthuka Vivekananthan, Jaffna Coordinator of American Corner.

A few months ago, the German Institute in Colombo has come out with an invitation for a programme in Jaffna in corrupt Tamil, and the Fine Arts Department of the University of Jaffna was a party to it.

The problem actually lies in the USA and the West approaching the nation of Eezham Tamils through outfits created in Colombo and monopolised by the Sinhalese, while the Tamils associated with them are subordinates, powerless to even correct the language, commented the Tamil activists in Jaffna.

It is not simply a question of language. It is only a small manifestation reflecting larger mechanisms at work.

The USA and the West are now intensely trying this game in the diaspora too, especially targeting the youth through their universities, foundations, institutions etc., the activists further said.
