A group of Sinhala students at the Faculty of Commerce & Management at the Eastern University, situated at Vanthaa'ru-moolai in Batticaloa, assaulted a 22-year-old Tamil student on Tuesday for posting a photo of Tamil Genocide Remembrance in his Facebook account. The Tamil student, severely assaulted by the group of senior Sinhala students was admitted to Chengkaladi hospital after the incident. The SL military intelligence and SL police have been alleged of inciting violence using a section of Sinhalese students.

Sinhala students who initially expressed solidarity with the marking of Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance Day by the Tamil students at the University said the SL military intelligence operatives had approached Sinhalese students to harass the Tamil students who took part in the Remembrance event held at the Eastern University on 18 May.

The group of Sinhala students who attacked the Tamil student demanded immediate removal of the photo from his Facebook account. If he didn't remove the photo, the student would not be able to attend the examination, the group has told.

As the student was not having the facility to remove the photo on the spot, he was brutally assaulted.

The University administration has not taken any action against the attackers, the student leaders at the Eastern University told TamilNet on Thursday.
