450 SL military personnel undergo training in India

450 SL military personnel undergo training in India

[TamilNet, Thursday, 06 September 2012, 01:08 GMT]
In a written reply to the upper house of the Indian Parliament, Indian Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday admittedly confirmed the training provided to Sri Lankan military personnel in different states of India, including Tamil Nadu where there has been strong opposition from political parties of different hues against the same. “More than 450 personnel from Sri Lankan armed forces are undergoing training at the defence establishments in India including in Bangalore, Kannur and Belgaum,” a PTI report said, citing Defence Ministry sources. In the meantime, representatives from Tamil Nadu political parties in both the houses of the Indian parliament demanded the Indian government to scrap all training given to Sri Lankan military personnel, accusing the latter of war crimes and genocide.

While the DMK MPs protested in the Rajya Sabha sessions, the AIADMK and the VCK MPs protested in Lok Sabha sessions.

The Indian Tamil parliamentarians also protested against the forthcoming visit by the SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa to Madhya Pradesh.

On 03 September, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchy Siva had raised questions on such training being given, urging the Indian government to stop it.

After his questions were not addressed, it was reported that he had shown banners and that the Speaker had called it “indiscipline”. Mr. Siva apparently retorted by asking “Is training of Sri Lankan Army discipline?”

In the meantime, public information made available on the Indian Defence Ministry website describing the ‘military-to-military relationship’ says that India's military-level exchanges have been noteworthy with US, China, France, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

“With the US and France they took the form of joint exercises and training exchanges, with South Africa and Sri Lanka, mainly training and exchange of experiences, and with China they formed an important confidence-building measure,” according to the website.

The website gives only a few details such as Sri Lankan military personnel have received training at the Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School at Veirangte, the most elite Indian counterinsurgency operations training institute located in the state of Mizoram, and at Army School Of Physical Training (ASPT) at Pune.

In Tamil Nadu, two Sri Lankan armed forces officers are being trained at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) at Wellington. Earlier, in July 2012, a group of nine SL military personnel were relocated from Tambaram in Tamil Nadu to Bangalore.

The Indian government provides assistance to the developing and under developed nations under programme of Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, which comes under the Ministry of External Affairs, enables Sri Lankan military personnel to get training free of cost or at subsidized rates.

BJP denies inviting Rajapaksa as Tamil leaders announce protest in India

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 05 September 2012, 19:14 GMT]
Tamils across Tamil Nadu on Wednesday launched protests against Rajapaksa’s scheduled visit to India on 21 September to inaugurate a centre for Buddhist study at Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. While VCK activists in Coimbatore burnt photographs of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sushma Swaraj, the leader of the BJP who had reportedly invited the genocide-accused SL president, MDMK leader Vaiko urged the BJP to cancel the invitation to Rajapaksa, stating that otherwise he would lead a black flag demonstration to Madhya Pradesh when the SL president arrives. In the meantime, Sushma Swaraj and other BJP leaders have denied inviting Rajapaksa, alleging that the Indian Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs were responsible for inviting the SL president.

“Invitation to Rajapajksa was sent by the prime minister, not by the leader of opposition. I have not invited him. Leader of opposition cannot invite anybody (head of the state) to the country. His itinerary has been finalised by PMO and MEA," India Today quoted BJP leader Sushma Swaraj as saying.

Likewise, a PTI report cited the Tamil Nadu state unit chief of the BJP Pon. Radhakrishnan: "The Centre is trying to shift the blame on BJP, despite our strong opposition to the visit of Rajapakse".

Rajapaksa was scheduled to visit Sanchi, located near Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, which is an important historical Buddhist site in India.

BJP leader Sushma represents the Vidisha constituency in the Indian Lok Sabha.

Other reports say that Madhya Pradesh, which is ruled by the BJP, would welcome the Sri Lankan president.

Commenting on the current situation, journalist PC Vinoj Kumar, editor of The Weekend Leader, writes in an opinion piece ‘India should not entertain a war criminal’ on Wednesday that the protests in Tamil Nadu calling for snapping of business ties with Sri Lanka owe to New Delhi’s failure to make Rajapaksa face international investigations on war crimes, further criticizing a section of the Indian media for a deliberate misinterpretation of ground realities.

“New Delhi remains stuck to an ostrich policy and fails to understand the public sentiment in Tamil Nadu. It lets itself to be misled by an elitist bureaucracy and a section of the media, which has failed to report facts,” he writes.

“By continuously ignoring the protests in Tamil Nadu against the Rajapaksa regime, and calling these protestors as Tamil chauvinists and members of fringe groups, and misrepresenting these protests as against the Sinhalese people, New Delhi is allowing the wounds to fester,” he further writes.

Genocide partners talk about people to people relationship

Genocide partners talk about people to people relationship

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 05 September 2012, 00:02 GMT]
The action taken by Tamil Nadu chief minister to send back Colombo footballers and an incident of mob harassment against Sri Lankan tourists in Tamil Nadu have made New Delhi and Colombo, the partners in the genocide of Eezham Tamils, to remember the importance of people to people relationship all of a sudden. Following close on their heels were The Hindu and the Marxist Communist Party of India (CPI-M). The BJP parliamentary leader Sushma Swaraj chose the time to invite Mahinda Rajapaksa to open a Buddhist institution in her constituency. Even though sections of media in India try to reduce the stand of Jayalalithaa as mere impulsive response to the open insistence of the Centre on training Sri Lankan military personnel in India, and project it as a dangerous game, powerful but short-sighted etc., the matter is much deeper than that, writes TamilNet political commentator in Colombo.

For decades, in the name of national interests of India, a bunch of dealers in the bureaucracy, corporates, sections of elite thinking that they are the custodians of the national interests and sections of media were bullying and muffling popular leaders of Tamil Nadu voicing for righteous solutions to the national question of Eezham Tamils. The time has now come for the popular leaders to come back at the dealers, as the grassroot reality is that any absence of timely justice and denial of liberation to Eezham Tamils would bring in a worse crisis to the national interests of India.

But New Delhi continues to harp on economic and military relations with genocidal Colombo as way of promoting India’s national interests, which is interpreted by Colombo as free licence to complete the annihilation of the nation of Eezham Tamils in the island.

India steps up relations to hit US $ 10 billion trade with Sri Lanka by 2017, Colombo media reports said on Friday.

An official spokesperson of New Delhi’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), assuring security to Sri Lankan visitors in India, including in Tamil Nadu, was cited saying to New Indian Express, Tuesday, "Our High Commission in Colombo issued visas to nearly 200,000 Sri Lankan nationals to visit India last year, while approximately 175,000 Indian tourists visited Sri Lanka in 2011 […] It is this perspective that guides all our actions on such matters."

The MEA spokesperson emphasized that people-to-people contacts are an integral part of the close historical, cultural, ethnic and civilisational ties between India and Sri Lanka, New Indian Express said.

The MEA spokesperson was responding to media on Monday’s travel warning of Colombo to Sri Lankans visiting Tamil Nadu, following Ms. Jayalalithaa ordering the exit of footballers.

Meanwhile, speaking to The Hindu, Colombo’s Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, regretting for the “unfortunate” incidents taking place in Tamil Nadu was also harping on “people to people contact.”

The CPI-M was quick to echo, by condemning Ms. Jayalalithaa for her action against the footballers and by coming out with the ‘people to people’ rhetoric.

"Whatever the differences and opposition that exists regarding the Sri Lankan government's approach to the Tamil question in Sri Lanka, nothing should be done to disturb people-to-people relations," the CPI-M said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Hindu came out with an editorial on Tuesday to tell the same point: “it is one thing to demand the government desist from training soldiers from the island nation and quite another to ask for — and then peremptorily impose — a virtual embargo on sporting and cultural ties with ordinary Sri Lankans,” the editorial said.

“It is tempting to see a connection between this hostile act towards innocent schoolchildren and the strident political demands,” The Hindu editorial further said.

After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, thousands of innocent Eezham Tamil students in India were sent back or refused of visa to come for admissions.

For several years, many ordinary Eezham Tamils, even those who had families in India, couldn’t make ‘people to people’ contact due to bias and policies followed in the Indian diplomatic missions all over the world.

On several occasions Eezham Tamil participants to academic and cultural events were turned back. Even now there are many Eezham Tamil academics, social workers and cultural activists in the island and in the diaspora who are unable to visit India.

In the last several decades no one has ever heard about any Eezham Tamil or Muslim schools in the North and East either sent or invited to play ‘people to people’ matches in India. What is special about the Royal College and an international school, ask grassroot activists in the island.

For a long time, India prohibited any people to people contact with Israel.

Similarly, for several years, there was no people-to-people relationship with apartheid South Africa, even though peoples of Indian origin make a considerable section of the population of that country.

Sri Lanka is worse than apartheid South Africa. Neither the apartheid South Africa caused disappearance of 1.5 lakhs of people of a nation in a single war, nor that regime was an elected one of the majority. If the government in Colombo is an elected government –not only once but twice– the majority that has elected the government has responsibility for the genocide, and it should know the world opinion on that. Otherwise its ‘genocidal-national’ arrogance that is much ‘respected’ by some Indian media nowadays will have no bounds.

Already the SL minister and former JVP propaganda secretary Wimal Weerawansa was cited in Colombo media for calling Tamil Nadu politicians “stupid” and for challenging that if Tamil Nadu incites violence against Sri Lankans visiting, training defence personnel, playing sports and engaging in pilgrimage in the state, what will happen if the Sri Lankan public respond by behaving in the same manner.

The main issue here is New Delhi’s adamant refusal to call a spade a spade. It never recognized the genocide, it was a party to it, it continues to facilitate it, it shields the genocidal regime in Colombo and it guarantees the ‘integrity’ of the genocidal state – all for economic and military integration of the island as a whole.

But by its complicity in the genocide, New Delhi along with others has demolished people to people relationship within the island and with Tamil Nadu for generations to come.

Only political justice and separation could now provide a platform of parity, confidence and trust to rebuild people to people relationship inside the island and with the outside. It may even pave way for spontaneous political unity eventually.

What has to be told to the edification of Sri Lanka friends, especially to the Marxist Communist Party of India, is that people to people relationship doesn’t come with corporate and military interests.

Genuine boat refugees fear for life, send SOS from Indonesia

Genuine boat refugees fear for life, send SOS from Indonesia

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 September 2012, 20:57 GMT]
53 Eezham Tamil boat refugees, seeking asylum in Australia but driven to Indonesia, are on a fast-unto-death protest on-board their vessel for the past four days, against the decision of the Indonesian authorities to hand them over to Sri Lanka Navy. The refugees claim that they will be persecuted, even killed, if handed over to the SL Navy. On Tuesday, they sent SOS messages to their families, relatives and journalists in the island to urge the international human rights groups to address their plight. A university student representative in Jaffna confirmed that there were genuine refugees needing international protection in the boat. The refugees heading for Christmas Island of Australia were taken to Indonesia on 28 August by that country’s navy after their boat ran out of fuel in mid sea.

After a dangerous travel on seas for 20 days, their health is steadily deteriorating over the hunger strike and casualties are feared if appropriate action is not taken, sources informed. Among the asylum seekers are 2 disabled persons, 4 women and 3 children.

In the meantime, a spokesman for the refugees in the boat has told reporters in Jaffna and Colombo through a phone conversation that they had started off from a dock near Chennai on 09 August 2012. According to his statement, the boat ran out of fuel on 19 August.

After being provided with 100 litres of fuel by friendly fishermen in the mid-sea, they were able to travel till 28 August when they again ran out of fuel, the spokesman told journalists in the island.

Following this, they were driven by the wind towards waters of Indonesia and were taken by the Indonesian navy to a port on the west coast, he added.

Hearing decision of authorities to deport them to Sri Lanka, the refugees began a fast-unto-death, on-board the vessel, claiming that they would be persecuted or killed in the island. They pleaded for 2000 litres of fuel that would suffice them to reach Christmas Island, Australia.

Separately, another group of 43 asylum seekers from the island have been detained at the Mentawai Island, 9 days after their boat's engine broke. This group too is reported to be having women and children.

Meanwhile, a message with photos from an unverified source, claiming to be ‘Friska Simamora from Mentawai, attached to GKPM church Radio Station,’ also states that there are two boats, “one that has got engine trouble and the other which has ran out of fuel”. The photos originating from this source have been provided below without verification.

Pilgrimage, tourism become show of genocidal jubilation

Pilgrimage, tourism become show of genocidal jubilation

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 September 2012, 18:00 GMT]
12.5 million Sinhala Buddhist visitors from the South have toured Jaffna peninsula during the last three years, from July 2009 to August 2012, according to the statistics released by the statistics division of the occupying Sri Lankan military in Jaffna. Highest number of visits was recorded in August 2012, when more than 100,000 southerners visited the peninsula. At least 80,000 of these visitors have been to Nagadipa vihara at Nayinaatheevu, an islet off Jaffna during the last month. In the meantime, the Eezham Tamil people of the peninsula, numbering less than 600,000 and the resettling people of Vanni live in a parallel universe without communication with the visiting Sinhalese, who are looked after by the occupying SL military and ‘civil’ administration.

Sinhalese visitors

Almost all those who visit the Jaffna peninsula also visit Puthukkudiyiruppu (PTK) of Mullaiththeevu district in Vanni.

The main ‘attraction’ projected to the Sinhala visitors in Vanni is an underground bunker, which the SL military claims as used by LTTE leader Mr V. Pirapaharan in Puthukkudiyiruppu earlier.

In addition, Tiger armoured vehicles and Sea Tiger gunboats have been put on display in an exhibition centre to project a ‘victory image’ to the SL military in the land of genocidal onslaught.

All the infrastructure, from the roads built with foreign ‘development’ assistance, the Buddha statues that erected near SL check posts and the small businesses that have mushroomed along the A9 and other ‘tourist’ spots have been designed and implemented to give comfort to the visitors from the South, while the resettling people of Vanni are struggling without proper roof, struggling for day to day life.

Eezham Tamils silently observing the ‘alien’ visitors avoid interaction with them to escape controversies with the occupying SL military.

The SL State has been nurturing the Mahavamsa mindset and a blatant form of racist superiority through its military occupation, suppression and display of military victory, which was abetted by world powers.

However, regardless of the ‘victory’ projection by the SL military, some southerners who visit the exhibition also comment that Tamils have been rising up again in the past despite all odds.

In the meantime, former SL president Chandrika Kumaratunga, on Monday visited Jaffna after 40 years in a confidentially organised trip to Ariyaalai and Achchvuveali villages.

Although the organisers said she had come to inspect the assistance provided by her NGO that had gifted solar panels six months ago to 100 families in these two villages, Ms Kumaratunga displayed much more interest in reading the minds of the people with regards to LTTE and its leader V. Pirapaharan, posing questions to people whom she met on her house to house visit, news sources in Jaffna said.

Ms Kumaratunga was provided high security during the visit.
