“Children are not mark sheets”
With barely a few weeks remaining for the announcement
of class XII examination results, parents must offer emotional support
to their children and try to be more affectionate to them, said I.
Selvamani Thinkaran, Senior Psychiatrist, here on Wednesday.
Addressing a gathering at
The Hindu
Education Plus Career Counselling programme, Dr. Thinkaran said,
“Parents are more anxious about the class XII results than the election
results. It is true that results can show the path towards a child’s
academic future, but the pressure to do well is also making parents
overstressed. They should try to understand that marks obtained in the
exams alone can’t determine the life of their ward.”
“Remind yourself that you have given birth to a child, not a marksheet,” added Dr. Thinkaran.
On
suicides she said “Distress and fear have led to students taking the
extreme step in several cases. They get negative thoughts that if their
percentage does not meet expectations, they might get humiliated.”
There has been an increase in the number of parents and students visiting counselling centres in the city, she said.
Advising
students on choosing a career, Dr. Selvamani Thinkaran said, “Students
must choose a course with confidence and not due to pressure.
Engineering and Medicine are not the only options available. Students
can also opt for teaching.”
“There is nothing wrong
in joining arts and science colleges. If your children are interested in
taking up arts, please let them pursue it,” she told the parents.
Parents
need to put themselves in their child’s shoes. “By doing so they will
be more conscious of what they are saying, and it will make them more
aware of what the child experiences. They must show support to the child
and alleviate their fear during examinations,” she added.
