Visiting UN official in Jaffna ‘questions’ Genocide Resolution

[TamilNet, Monday, 02 March 2015, 19:09 GMT]
The UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, a US diplomat, who was on a visit to Jaffna on Monday met NPC Chief Minister Justice C.V. Wigneswaran and questioned the Chief Minister on the reason for the NPC Resolution on Tamil genocide at this juncture. The resolution was not against peaceful co-existence with Sinhalese. In fact, it is essential that the Sinhalese understand how the Tamils perceive the collective nature of all crimes committed against them both in the past and at the present, Mr Wigneswaran told the UN official. When Mr Wigneswaran questioned Mr Feltman on the possible danger of OISL findings getting watered down at the end of the deferral period, the UN diplomat assured that the findings would be published without any change, Mr Wigneswaran told reporters.

The blatant denial of vacating military camps in the North by the new regime, which was brought to power with the significant contribution of Tamils, reminded the Tamils it was now time to pass the resolution, Mr Wigneswaran told Mr Feltman. The NPC Chief Minister also explained the nature of the protracted genocide.

The UN official was ‘explaining’ that a number of countries had felt that the new Sri Lankan president and the regime in Colombo needed to be given a one-time only chance till September and that it was the reason behind the deferral.

The Genocide Resolution passed on 10 February by the Northern Provincial Council was seeking real international prosecutions at the ICC for the historic and recent genocide against Tamils.

Apart from the NPC resolution on Tamil genocide, the protests in Jaffna against the OISL deferral and the resolve amongst Eezham Tamils to boycott domestic investigations by the Sri Lankan government have forced the UN official to undertake the trip to Jaffna, informed diplomatic sources told TamilNet.

The visiting UN official also met the SL Governor to North HMGS Palihakkara, the Chairman of Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies K. Paramanathan, legal activist Ms.Shantha Abimannasingam (President Counsel) and a section of civil society activists.
