Youth conference in Chennai condemns staging CHOGM in Sri Lanka

A day long international conference of youth held last Saturday in Chennai raised its voice against the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in November this year. The conference decried Colombo government as a fascist, genocidal force that killed over 150,000 Eezham Tamils in the last phase of the 2009 war. Over 700 participants took part in the conference expressing concerns over holding the Commonwealth meeting in Sri Lanka.

Prominent leaders and activists took part in the conference.

The conference accused that even after the war, the militarized SL government has stationed hundreds of thousands of Sinhala military personnel in the homeland of Eezham Tamils.

A resolution passed in the conference pointed out that the genocidal, fascist government in Sri Lanka was was taking up rapid Sinhalisation of the Tamil homeland and that the CHOGM was only an attempt to remove the stains of blood from the SL State.

Organised jointly by Save Tamils, a team of IT students and professionals from Tamil Nadu, and the Students' Struggle Committee for Tamil Eelam, the conference condemned the Indian government for ignoring the sentiments of Eezham Tamils and proceeding to announce Colombo as Commonwealth’s honorary head for the next two years.

Besides demanding that the Commonwealth meeting should not be held in the island, the conference also passed a resolution demanding that a referendum be held among Eezham Tamils living in the island and all over the world on deciding their political solution.

The conference also urged the Tamil Nadu government to pass a resolution against the participation of Indian prime Minister in the CHOGM. The Tamil Nadu government should also take steps to implement economic sanctions on Sri Lanka by India and the Tamil Nadu state.

For the first time in Tamil Nadu, students from London, Kharagpur and also from various districts of the state have participated in the conference extending their solidarity towards the cause of Tamils in Sri Lanka, calling on the Indian government to boycott the Commonwealth Summit to be held in Sri Lanka, the organisers of the event said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

Some excerpts from the press statement follow:

Mr Vaiko, the general secretary of MDMK, reiterated over the history of countries that were expelled from Commonwealth’s nations for committing human rights violations that were many times lesser than the massive structural genocide committed by the Rajapaksa government. He named India as a ‘co-accused’ nation which tries to suppress the arising voices against it for its guardian role played in the genocide by lobbying its ways to enthrone Rajapaksa as the common wealth head. On an ending note he warned that if India wants to preserve its unity with Sri Lanka, it will be only at the cost of shattering the unity within India.

Parimala, Save Tamils Movement, explained about how India betrayed Eezham Tamils since the independence of Sri Lanka.

Comrades K.Venkatraman, the general secretary of Tamil National Communist Party and Thiyagu, general secretary of Tamil National Liberation Movement clearly explained about the principles and various charters of the Commonwealth Council and how Sri Lanka violated all those principles.

Comrade Thiyagu explained the audience about the significance of the boycott CHOGM demand and how it would impact the justice for Eezham Tamils if we fail in this demand. Thiyagu had earlier announced his fast unto death protest demanding the boycott of CHOGM in Sri Lanka starting from September 26, 2013 , the remembrance day of Martyr Dhileepan.

“The Sri Lankan government had dismissed the Chief Justice Shivani Bhandaranayake, jeopardizing the independence of judiciary. When  Fiji, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa can be suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations, why not Sri Lanka, which continues with its structural genocide by destroying temples, churches and mosques?” Prabhakaran, a student of IIT-Kharagpur, asked.

Writer Jeyaprakasam said that Sri Lanka has never been a friendly nation to India. Whereas India sees Pakistan and China as a threat, it refuses to recognize Sri Lanka a potential threat in the south. He stated that India should not participate in the Commonwealth of Nations.

The seven point resolutions passed by the conference are:

1. Sinhala-Buddhist Supremacist Sri Lankan government has violated the 1971 Singapore Declaration of Commonwealth principles of equal rights for all regardless of race, colour, creed or political belief. Hence, this conference urges Commonwealth Nations specifically India not to conduct CHOGM summit in Colombo.
2. This conference urges the Commonwealth Council to expel Sri Lanka from Commonwealth foundation as it has killed more than 1.5 lakh Tamil civilians in the war and for continuing the structural – cultural genocide of Tamils.
3. This conference urges the Indian government to heed to the democratic appeal of 70 million people of Tamil Nadu to change the venue of CHOGM summit out of Sri Lanka. If the summit held in Colombo , India should boycott the CHOGM. The conference congratulates the Canadian Prime Minister’s decision to boycott CHOGM in Colombo. Likewise,this conference urges the Prime Minister of India to boycott the commonwealth summit if it is held in Sri Lanka.
4. This conference appeals the commonwealth council to pass a resolution in the council demanding an independent international investigation into war crimes, genocidal crimes committed against Tamils in Sri Lanka.
5. In order to safeguard Tamils in Sri Lanka being subjected to ethnic cleansing even today by means of militarization and Sinhalicization , this conference appeals to the International community to work for installing a transitional civil administration under the aegis of international community in north eastern part of the island, the homeland of Tamils as a temporary measure.
6. This conference demands a public referendum among Eezham Tamils in Sri Lanka and diaspora countries as a means for Eezham Tamils, being subjected to ethnic cleansing by Sinhala Supremacist Sri Lankan state for the past 60 years, to choose their political solution in a democratic manner.
7. This conference appeals to the government of Tamil Nadu to pass a resolution in Tamil Nadu State Assembly urging the Prime Minister of India to boycott CHOGM if it is held in Sri Lanka.Further, the conference urges the government of Tamil Nadu to implement the earlier passed resolution seeking economic embargo against Sri Lanka in Tamil Nadu and India.

US condemns violence in Welweriya

“The United States has expressed concern over the fatal shooting of three civilians by the Sri Lankan military, which attacked people seeking protection in a church during a recent protest to demand clean drinking water,” Associated Press reported on Saturday, citing from a State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, who said that “there was no excuse for violence, especially in a house of worship.” Ms. Psaki has also called for “a thorough and transparent inquiry” into the violence at Welweriya. While taking into consideration the US consternation over the Sri Lankan military’s brutality, activists in the island urge that if America is genuinely concerned about the highhanded behaviour of the Sri Lankan military, then Pentagon should suspend all military-to-military relationship with a state accused of genocide.

“We call for a thorough and transparent inquiry into all aspects of the Weliweriya violence, for those conclusions to be made public and for there to be a credible mechanism to prosecute any wrongdoing,” the Associated Press quoted Ms. Psaki.

Separately, in a release on Friday, Human Rights Watch called on the Sri Lankan government to investigate the deaths that occurred owing to the violence at Welweriya.

“It’s undisputed that security forces killed three protesters, but the Sri Lankan government’s kneejerk reaction is to deny possible wrongdoing,” said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of HRW.

“Instead of promoting the military’s version of events, the government should order an independent investigation and prosecute anyone who violated the law,” she added.

Criticising the UK government for providing legitimacy to Sri Lanka through the CHOGM, the activist group Tamil Solidarity in a statement on Thursday condemned a deceptive response provided by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to a leading British trade union who had questioned the morality of Britain participating in the CHOGM. Responding to the protest by UNISON, Britain’s largest trade union, the FCO had in a letter dated 26 July defended UK’s participation in the CHOGM, while making token remarks on peace and human rights. “We believe that CHOGM will either highlight progress and respect for Commonwealth values in Sri Lanka, or draw attention to the absence of such progress.” Tamil Solidarity condemned this “shoddy explanation” of the FCO and argued that UK was participating in CHOGM only for its own interests, calling on British Tamils to boycott the Conservatives.

A UNISON trade union branch in London sent a strong protest to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) about its decision to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka this year.

The host of this meeting, the government of Sri Lanka, stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Outrageously hosting CHOGM will be followed by Sri Lanka taking the head of the Commonwealth for the next two years.

This disgraceful endorsement of a truly brutal regime, responsible for the massacre of tens of thousands of Tamils in 2009 and continued trampling of democratic rights, has angered many activists and campaigners, including the trade unions in Britain. A number of key leading union activists came together in June this year to firmly condemn the government’s plans to hold this meeting in Sri Lanka.

• FCO replies to UNISON defending British participation in CHOGM

The FCO communicated an official reply to the Unison branch. In it they make a contrived claim that they call for a “credible investigation into allegations of violations and abuses of international humanitarian and human rights law by both sides”. The FCO also claims that the UK sponsored the resolution passed in the UN on 21 March. In summary the FCO says it will ‘pressure’ the government to implement the recommendation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and will ‘ask’ the government to respect human rights.

There is no room for hope that the FCO’s vague proposals will be effective. The LLRC makes the mildest and frailest recommendations, which was itself commissioned by the regime, and yet the government refuses to implement it.

Tamils living in Britain have heard this story since 2009. Then Tamils marched in their tens of thousands – one of the largest gatherings of ethnic minorities in British history – to demand justice. The then government promised to stand up for ‘human rights’ but did nothing. The details of the gross violations and the massacre committed by the Sri Lankan regime and the hypocritical and puny efforts of the LLRC recommendation have been communicated to Labour and Con-Dem government officials on a number of occasions by activists and human rights campaigners.

The current Coalition government of the Tories and Liberal Democrats has done nothing of substance to contribute to bringing the justice that was demanded by that mass movement of British citizens of Sri Lankan origin. Now strong trade unions representing hundreds of thousands of members are adding their voice to this.

In the face of such mass opposition the government tries to ‘soften’ its language by repeating the hypocritical claim that they ‘continue to stand for human rights’. The government hopes this will satisfy the Tamil populations and unions and that they give up their campaign, and even provide grateful vote banks.

But recent revelations in the British press prove the real approach of the British government to the murderous regime. Arms licences continue to be signed off for export to Sri Lanka. Tamil Solidarity demands that the FCO publishes the details of all the dirty dealings with the Sri Lankan government. We demand to know all the business deals, including super-exploitation of workers in Sri Lanka’s Special Economic Zones in the interest of British big business profit, that are proposed for the Sri Lankan government. In the interest of profit, the rights of Tamils do not feature.

The FCO statement also refers to Alistair Burt’s visit to Sri Lanka and claims that he took the human rights concerns directly to the Sri Lankan government. It’s breath-taking how the FCO spins the role the Conservative MP, Alistair Burt. In fact Burt described the Sri Lankan regime and its president as ‘great friends of Britain’. He also played a role in opening up a number of government offices in the north which are seen by the local populations as sites of intimidation and offensive monitoring by the government.

During Burt’s visit he seems to have made no effort whatsoever to talk to the real victims of the war or to visit a number of camps that the Sri Lankan government still don’t want to show to the world. It appears he was escorted by the government to its ‘showcase’ areas and cooperated with the Sri Lankan government in spreading some of its propaganda. He is becoming the regime’s voice in Britain.

Burt claims that he is impressed with the Sri Lankan government’s development and improvement. He claims that the “end of terrorism in Sri Lanka makes Sri Lanka a more ‘attractive market’”. He also “welcome[s] the end of war and end of horrific LTTE terrorism”. No regret whatsoever about how the war was ended with such a brutal massacre and the continued persecution of a huge number of people, including the denial of basic democratic rights such as freedom of speech, freedom to organise, as well as a notorious land grab in the traditional Tamil areas.

In February this year Burt claimed that the UK has no evidence that deported Tamils were tortured on their return to Sri Lanka. The Tories have now hired an advert van to be drive around East London with the big slogan of ‘go home or face arrest’! Again in February, Burt claimed publicly that the UK does not export arms to Sri Lanka, saying that only ‘shotgun cartridges for sporting use’ and ‘communications equipment for a transport aircraft’ were exported.

But in July it was revealed that 49 arms equipment licences worth £8m have been granted to the Sri Lankan government – and they included 600 assault rifles. We refuse to be fooled by him, the FCO or the British government.

We do not believe for an instant that the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary visiting Sri Lanka will act decisively to deliver justice. The sole aim of their visit is to represent the business interests of a few companies who also stand accused of violating human rights in their drive to produce cheap products. The tragedy which ensues has been illustrated devastatingly by the deaths of textile workers in Bangladesh.

Tamil Solidarity categorically rejects the shoddy explanation given to Unison by the FCO.

We urge all Tamils and Tamil campaign groups to cut its all ties with the Conservative Party and to instead expose their hypocrisy.

We reject our community being used as a vote bank. Not a single Tamil vote to the Tories.

We appeal to all trade unions to inform their members of this hypocrisy and to organise public meetings and branch meetings to inform members.

Trichy gathering condemns “US–Indian betrayal” of Eezham Tamils

Addressing a mass gathering of students and common people in Trichy (Thiruchchi) district, Tamil Nadu, student leaders, youth activists, and veteran political activists condemned the betrayal of the Eezham Tamil nation by the US-Indian axis, further accusing them of abetting the genocidal Sri Lankan state, on Sunday. Not only India, but the entire world has turned its attention on the mass struggle waged by our students in Tamil Nadu over the last month, said the organisers of the gathering. If the Indian government does not pay heed to the just demands put forth by the student protestors across Tamil Nadu, the students will begin and intensify civil disobedience campaigns, student activists from Thiruchchi told TamilNet.

The students would begin by handing over their voter IDs, ration card to district collectors, sources said, adding that they widen protests to exert moral pressure on the Indian government.

Student leaders across Tamil Nadu are also considering intensifying protests against the policies of the International Community of Establishments.

As a result of the student protests, a historic resolution was passed in Tamil Nadu State Assembly demanding UN referendum for the independence of Tamil Eelam. Now, this resolution should be also passed in the Indian Parliament and proceed with the same in the UN Assembly, declared the student leaders vowing that the fire set ablaze by the student upsurge in Tamil Nadu will not go away till the formation of Tamil Eelam in a release.

The student leaders had invited veteran leaders Pazha Nedumaran and R. Nallakannu as special guests to their gathering to celebrate the struggle.

“Mr Nedumaran as a honest and committed Tamil nationalist leader beyond politics and Mr Nallakannu, as a veteran leader who took part in the peoples struggle against British colonialism are invited to address the event,” a note by the Students Federation for Liberation of Tamil Eelam said.

“We have invited these two leaders in their capacity as personalities beyond politics to address in our gathering,” the note said.

The resolution tabled by the USA at the UN Human Rights Council is a hollow one. India further watered it down, the students observed. Only an independent international investigation on the genocide-accused Sri Lankan state and a comprehensive economic boycott would bring any justice to the Eezham Tamils, they said.

They also condemned the Congress politicians in Tamil Nadu for having launched violence against the peaceful protests of the students.

The event celebrated the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle with Tamil cultural events, including Therukoothu, mimes, and street plays.

TNPF condemns Sampanthan’s statement on SL military, LTTE

The Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) on Tuesday strongly condemned the SL parliamentary speech made by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan last Friday. Mr. Sampanthan had said that the TNA was not demanding the complete withdrawal of the SL military from the Tamil territory and that the LTTE had had earned its destruction by being a ‘terrorist’ organization not observing human rights and democracy and by engaging in the killing of Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala leaders. The statement coming from the leader of the TNA should be taken as the policy stand of the TNA. Neither the constituent parties of the TNA nor its parliamentary members have so far contradicted the statement, said the TNPF press release, signed by its president Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and secretary, Selvarasa Kajendran.

The Sri Lankan military is a Sinhala military, which as far as Tamils are concerned is an Occupation Army. More than the number and whether the withdrawal is partial or complete, the important question is that on what mandate the SL military could be stationed in the Tamil homeland. If there is a pragmatic political solution recognizing the nation of Tamils and if the country is a union formed together with the nation of Sinhalese, then the military of such a country only could be stationed in the Tamil land, the TNPF statement said.

If the TNA is not demanding the complete withdrawal of the SL military why have they joined the TNPF agitations demanding the withdrawal of the military? Why have they signed a joint statement of all Tamil parties demanding the withdrawal of the military at the New Delhi meeting in August 2011? Do their acts mean dishonesty at heart and aim at getting the support of Tamils by deception, asked the TNPF statement, adding that the TNA stand, at a time when Tamils have to liberate themselves from the SL military, only leads them permanently under its grip and only helps the forces that are restlessly eager in annihilating the soul of Tamil nationalism.

On Sampanthan’s statement on the LTTE, the TNPF said that the LTTE was destroyed with the complicity of imperialist powers as a part of a geopolitical agenda. Imperialist powers of geopolitical interests put ‘terrorist’ stamp on righteous liberation struggles to derogate them and to justify their annihilation. Sampanthan citing human rights and democracy is not due to his ignorance but to fulfil the agenda of the forces against the Tamil nation, the TNPF statement said.

Sampanthan only attests Rajapaksa justifying the genocidal war and the plight inflicted on the people at Mu’l’lvaaykkaal as War Against Terrorism. At a time when the UN internal report strongly condemns the way Sri Lanka conducted the war, the statement of Mr Sampanthan facilitates opportunity for the Sri Lankan government to once again escape from an international investigation. It aims at spoiling whatever favourable opportunities Tamils may get in the unfolding international milieu, the TNPF statement observed.

Above all, the TNPF strongly condemns the statement of Mr Sampanthan against Tamil nation and serving the interests of other forces, coming at a time when the SL military and police have accelerated oppression on university students and the public in the last few weeks, the TNPF press statement further said.

Meanwhile, in the observation of senior media circles in the island, the TNA having no program for people’s polity or movement of Tamils counts only on whatever concessions that may come to it from the Rajapaksa regime, through the policies of India and the USA appeasing and abetting the regime.

The TNA is already working with a collaboration agenda, the media circles said. They cited the latest ‘advice’ of N. Ram, the former editor of The Hindu, urging TNA to work with the strongest ever Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Whatever the TNA’s nominated parliamentarian Mr Sumanthiran had said last year on ‘non-descript’ solutions after the TNA visit to Washington and before the US-led LLRC adoption at Geneva that later worsened the situation for Tamils in the island, and whatever Mr Sampanthan now says before the proposed visit to Washington in January and before the March sessions at Geneva, are what the powers wish to grace Tamils with, the media circles observed.

If the Tamils in the island, in the diaspora and in Tamil Nadu envisage anything different, then they should be prepared to polarize opinion in no uncertain terms, find leadership with backbone and statesmanship to express it, and should know where exactly it should be addressed to the face and in what way, the media circles shared their insight.

The capture of leading Tamil media in the island and attacks on independent media of Tamils are ultimately aimed at silencing the opinion-making process. Often Tamil politicians and political aspirants finding opinion a hindrance to the collaboration course they have been deployed in, and sometimes even diplomats and institutions of powers, carryout the capture and attack in foul ways, the media circles in the island further said.

In a recent interview to TamilNet's Palaka'ni, Mr Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said that the Tamil parties had missed directing USA on LLRC. Had the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) been firm on the stand of Eezham Tamils, the USA couldn’t have ended up with the LLRC adoption at Geneva, he said in the interview.

EPC TNA councilor condemns attack on University students in Jaffna

Jaffna University student J.Jenanarthanan who is also a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) councilor in the Eastern Provincial Council issued a statement condemning the attack on Jaffna university students by the State armed forces on the Heroes Day. Mr Jenanarthanan was one of the three councilors elected to the Eastern Provincial Council on the TNA ticket from the Trincomalee district. He has been studying in the Arts Faculty of the Jaffna University.

”The Government of Sri Lanka has proved again its suppressive rule with the attack carried out by its armed forces on Jaffna university students. The attack on Tamil students and journalists should be considered as an act against their basic human rights,” Janarthanan said in his statement.

“Under the guise of developing the Tamil areas the SL government is attempting to suppress the aspirations of the Tamil community in its own traditional land,” he further said in a statement issued on Friday.

“Tamil people are currently placed in a tragic situation that they cannot organize remembrance events of their loved ones. To suppress the power of youths could boomerang on the government force that is engaged in destroying it,” the statement issued by the young member of the EPC further said.

Canadian organizations condemn attack on students in Jaffna

Condemning the brutal assaults on the students of University of Jaffna by the occupying Sri Lanka’s police and military apparatus that has been happening with intensity since Tuesday, the Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA), the York Federation of Students (YFS), the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU), and the Tamil Youth Organization-Canada (TYO-Canada) have issued statements supporting both the civil and political liberties of the Eezham Tamil students in the homeland as well as the democratic right of the Tamil nation to self-determination.

The CPA, largest umbrella peace coalition in Canada with over 180 member organizations, in a release dated 28 November, echoed the call of the Jaffna students’ demand for international observers to have access to the campus to witness the behaviour of Sri Lankan military personnel.

"We stand in solidarity with students at the University of Jaffna, and demand the immediate release of all those taken into custody" said Derrick O'Keefe, co-chair of the CPA. "Their right to freedom of assembly, expression and speech must be protected."

"This incident is only the latest in a long history of oppression of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka," said Chris Jones, the Alliance's other co-chair, adding that "The Sri Lankan government must respect the Tamils' right to self-determination, and end the harassment of Tamil students on their own campus."

• Statement by the Scarborough Campus Student's Union

In a release dated November 28, the SCSU, which represents close to 11,000 fulltime and part-time students at the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus, said “Due to the oppressive nature of militarization on campuses, the SCSU sees that militarization anywhere worldwide as a threat to access to education. When students who try to express their views in a peaceful manner get brutally attacked for political reasons, they can't engage in an academic environment. For these reasons the SCSU chooses to condemn the attacks the Sri Lankan military committed to the peaceful protestors.”

"The SCSU strives to fight inequalities wherever they might exist. We stand in solidarity with the protestors. Unfortunately this serves as a reminder of the constant state of oppression Tamil's face, and should reenforce the need for self determination and a separate Tamil state", said Guled Arale, Vice-President External, SCSU.

• Statement by the York Federation of Students

The YFS, which represents over 54,000 undergraduate students at York University, in a release on November 29, conveying its solidarity with the right of the Eezham Tamil students in the Tamil homeland to observe Maaveerar Naal, said “The York Federation of Students, stands united with the Tamil students who chose to commemorate such a significant event. The York Federation of Students stands in solidarity with the Tamil students who were urging international non-governmental organizations to recognize the punitive action taken against their peaceful assembly.”

"These occurrences are not new to Tamil students at this university, and continue to serve as a reminder of the constant state of oppression in which the Tamil people in Sri Lanka live. Until the right to self-determination, homeland and nation are recognized, Tamil students and people will constantly be under attack," said Jessica Thyriar, Vice-President, Campus Life.

In a release on Wednesday, TYO-Canada called on “the United Nations and the International Community to place meaningful pressure on the Sri Lankan regime for the immediate release of the Tamil students who are detained. Furthermore we call on the UN and the International Community to demand Sri Lanka to stop the intimidation, harassment and attacks on Tamils.”

TYO reiterated that the occupation of the Tamil homeland by the Sri Lankan military must cease and called for civilian rule in the Tamil homeland.

“It is a sad day for all of us when our brothers and sisters cannot have basic fundamental rights every student should have. The right to organize, and the right to mobilize are all democratic values as Canadians we cherish” said Priyanth Nallaratnam, member of TYO-Canada.

Recognizing that the latest incidents are but part of a long history of the violent oppression of the civil liberties of the Eezham Tamils, TYO-Canada called on the United Nations and the international community “to demand for a political solution to the Tamil national question based on the right to self-determination of the Tamil people as a means of resolving the conflict in Sri Lanka.”

Muslim academics condemn Rajapaksa politics of SLMC

“As a member of the Eastern Muslim community, I am ashamed and take this opportunity to condemn the deceitful actions of the SLMC,” says Dr. Mohamed Ismail Zulfika, responding to the politics of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) that has joined the Rajapaksa government in forming the Eastern Provincial Council administration after getting the Muslim votes by campaigning against the government. This is betrayal of trust of the Muslim voters and even if projected as means of ‘bargaining politics’ it will affect the long-term goals of the war-torn society of the North and East, Zulfika who is now in the diaspora further said in a feature received by TamilNet. Meanwhile, Professor M.A. Nuhman and Dr. M.S.M. Jalaldeen, two prominent Muslim academics from the East, serving universities in the island, have also come out with similar views.

Speaking to Jaffna-based Uthayan daily a few days ago, Dr. Nuhman, Senior Professor or Peradeniya University, criticized the ‘bargaining’ politics of the SLMC and said that its modus operandi only shows the absence of any policy in the party, caring people’s interest or regional interest.

Dr. Jalaldeen, Senior Lecturer of the South Eastern University was saying that the consequences of the SLMC politics would be disastrous.

SLMC that should have stood up like TNA to Tamils, rejected the hand extended by Tamils and has gone to the side where it should not go. There was anticipation that along with this provincial election, a political unity would unfold between Tamils and Muslims, but the golden opportunity is lost, Dr. Jalaldeen further said.

“The actions of the SLMC have caused a severe damage to the reconciliation process between these Tamil and Muslim communities that live together in the Eastern province. SLMC has not only made a historical blunder that goes against the will of the Eastern Muslim community but also damaged the social environment for a healthy co-existence of both communities. Further, both communities have lost a fresh and long awaited opportunity for reconciliation to build a long lasting peace with justice, equality and respect. A golden opportunity was lost,” she said.

Alternative political activists among Eezham Tamils urged the civil society of both the Tamils and Muslims in the island to facilitate the emergence of a joint people’s movement for the edification of their political parties.

TNA as primarily a political party in the clutches of powers is gagged from coming out with a mass movement spearheading a people’s struggle, the activists said.

They cited to the TNA taking the decision of contesting a farce election against all warnings just because of power pressures, the alleged ‘assistances’ the TNA was receiving from India in the elections, the alleged role TNA played along with India in silencing independent Tamil national voices in Tamil media, including the editorial change in a leading Tamil daily, and the kind of candidates it fielded in the elections – all ultimately serving the designs of the international Rajapaksa abetters to bail out the state and regime, the activists said.

Urging people’s movements to independently develop in the island and in the diaspora, they were hopeful of the opinion steps taken by the Muslim academics.

Full text of the feature by Dr. Zulfika, sent in response to some questions put forth by a TamilNet contact in Canada, follows:

In the 2012 eastern provincial council election, out of 33% of the total Muslim voters in the East about 20.98% voted for the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). This represents the voice of 63% of the total Muslim population in the Eastern Province. This percentage is equal to the percentage of total anti-government vote in the eastern province in this election. The Muslim people in the east now, have strongly demonstrated their anti-government stance.

In my opinion, the SLMC has betrayed the trust of Eastern Muslims by taking a covert decision to joint the very government that was vehemently criticized by them in the election campaign. The SLMC has not only failed to respect and represent the aspirations and concerns of Eastern Muslims; it has also abused the power and mandate given to them by the Muslim people of the east.

Since the majority of the Eastern Muslim community has clearly expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruling United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, the decision by the SLMC to joint the government should be seen as abuse of people’s power for the benefits of the leaders of the SLMC.

The decision also contravenes the SLMC’ s promises to the Muslim community during election campaign and goes against the aspirations and concerns of the Eastern Muslim community. The SLMC’ s decision to support the very government that acts openly against the minority rights and wishes, behaves like a ‘big brother” (in the words of a SLMC leader), works in favor of ‘majority’ and implements a chauvinistic agenda is deplorable.

The ‘bargaining politics’ with the ‘majority government’ can be considered as a ‘life saving strategy’ to bring maximum benefits to ‘minority’ community when and if it is based on justice, short term and long-term benefits for the whole community without jeopardizing the rights and interests of other community. When considering a war-torn North –East society’s short term and quick development needs, one should be mindful of the compromises that affect the long-term goals in the selfish interest of the short-term benefits.

The SLMC has deceived the Muslim community for the sake of its dominant individual’s power hungry and narrow economic interests. Once again, The SLMC has betrayed the Eastern Muslim community.

The Muslim people voted to elect their own counselors. They voted for the SLMC in the hope that the party would represent and fight for the ‘unique and specific goals of the Muslim community’, for which the party was originally formed. This time around their vote was also a solid protest vote for the UPFA government’s attacks on Mosques and other anti-Muslim activities. As a member of the Eastern Muslim community, I am ashamed and take this opportunity to condemn the deceitful actions of the SLMC.

In the future, as in the past, the government would use the support of the SLMC to garner more support from Muslim countries of the world for its racist and discriminatory agenda. In that sense, the support will be used against minorities, particularly against the Tamils. The support extended by the SLMC is a classic example of ‘using your hand to hurt your own eye’!

Saluting the sacrifice of Salem based Tamil Nadu activist Vijayaraj, who had self-immolated protesting Mahinda Rajapaksa's visit to India and who succumbed to his burns on Tuesday, Eezham Tamils in the UK conveyed their solidarity to the protesting Tamils of Tamil Nadu, condemning India's welcome of the genocide-accused SL President. Demonstrating outside the Indian High Commission in London on Friday, the protesters further urged the Indian government to recognize the genocide of the Eezham Tamils.

The demonstrators in the UK further asked whether India was completely immune to the sentiments of the Tamils worldwide and the Tamils in Tamil Nadu by entertaining a representative of a state that was resposnible for one of the worst genocides in the 21st century, sources told TamilNet.

 சென்னை, ஆக. 28: இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு பயிற்சி தொடரும் என்று மத்திய அரசு கருத்து தெரிவித்திருப்பது அதிர்ச்சி அளிப்பதாக உள்ளது என முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா கூறியுள்ளார்.  தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பு கொடுத்து, இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதை நிறுத்திக்கொண்டு அவர்களை மத்திய அரசு உடனடியாகத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங்குக்கு செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்தில் அவர் மீண்டும் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.  இலங்கை ராணுவத்தினருக்கு இந்தியாவில் அளிக்கப்பட்டு வரும் பயிற்சி தொடரும் என்று மத்திய அரசு சார்பில், மத்திய பாதுகாப்புத் துறை இணையமைச்சர் பல்லம் ராஜு தில்லியில் திங்கள்கிழமை கருத்துத் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.  தமிழக அரசு மற்றும் தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் எதிர்ப்பையும் மீறி இலங்கை கடற்படை வீரர்களுக்கு உதகையில் பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருவது குறித்து அவரிடம் செய்தியாளர்கள் கேட்டதற்கு, "இலங்கை நமது நட்பு நாடு, எனவே இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிப்பது தொடரும்' என்று அவர் பதில் கூறியிருந்தார்.  இந்த நிலையில் மத்திய அரசின் சார்பில், மத்திய இணை அமைச்சர் பல்லம் ராஜு கூறியுள்ள கருத்து அதிர்ச்சி அளிப்பதாக உள்ளது என முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிக்கும் வகையில், நீலகிரியில் பயிற்சி பெற்று வரும் இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களைத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டுமென்று என்று வலியுறுத்தி பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங்குக்கு முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை (ஆகஸ்ட் 28) மீண்டும் கடிதம் எழுதியுள்ளார்.  அதன் விவரம்: நீலகிரி மாவட்டம், வெலிங்டனில் உள்ள ராணுவப் பயிற்சி மையத்தில் இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த இரண்டு ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிப்பது குறித்து கடந்த 25-ம் தேதி தங்களுக்குக் கடிதம் எழுதியிருந்தேன். வீரர்கள் இருவரையும் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டுமென கடிதத்தில் வலியுறுத்தியிருந்தேன்.  இந்தக் கோரிக்கையை ஏற்பதற்குப் பதிலாக, இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிக்கும் விவகாரம் தொடர்பாக மத்திய அரசு வெளிப்படையாகக் கருத்து தெரிவித்துள்ளதாக அறிகிறேன். இந்தக் கருத்து எனக்கு அதிர்ச்சி அளிப்பதாக இருக்கிறது.  அதாவது, இலங்கை நட்பு நாடாகத் தொடரும் வரையிலும் அந்த நாட்டு வீரர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்படும் என மத்திய அரசு கூறியுள்ளதாகத் தெரிகிறது.  எனது அரசின் நோக்கங்களையும், தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளையும் மத்திய அரசு முழுமையாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியாத நிலையையே இது காட்டுகிறது.  எனவே, இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு பயிற்சி அளிப்பது போன்ற கண்டனத்துக்குரிய செயல்களை மத்திய அரசு மேற்கொள்ளாமல் தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிக்கும் வகையில் நீலகிரி மாவட்டத்தில் பயிற்சி பெற்று வரும் வீரர்களை உடனடியாகத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என தனது கடிதத்தில் முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா கேட்டுக் கொண்டுள்ளார்.  கருணாநிதி:மத்திய அமைச்சரின் பதில் தமிழகத்தையும், தமிழர்களின் உணர்வையும் காயப்படுத்துவதுபோல் உள்ளது.இந்தியாவைவிட ஆறு மடங்கு அதிகமான பல்வேறு உதவிகளை இலங்கைக்கு சீனா செய்துள்ள நிலையில், இந்தியா எதை நம்பி இன்னமும் இலங்கையை நட்பு நாடு என்று சொல்கிறது. இதை ஒருதலைபட்சமான நட்பு என்றுதான் சொல்லமுடியுமே தவிர, இருநாடுகளுக்கிடையே சுமுகமான நட்பு என்று எப்படிச் சொல்ல முடியும்?  விஜயகாந்த்:தமிழகத்தையும், தமிழர்களையும் பணயம் வைத்து இலங்கையுடன் ஒருதலைபட்ச நட்புகொள்ள மத்திய அரசு துடிப்பது ஏன் என்பது புரியவில்லை. இலங்கை கடற்படையினரால் தமிழக மீனவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து தாக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றனர். இதுதான் நட்பின் லட்சணமா?  தா.பாண்டியன்:இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதன் மூலம் தமிழர்களின் உணர்வுகளை மத்திய அரசு கொச்சைப்படுத்தி வருகிறது. பயிற்சி பெறும் இலங்கை வீரர்களை வெளியேற்ற வலியுறுத்தி செப்டம்பர் 1-ம் தேதி இந்திய கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சி சார்பில் உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டம் நடைபெறும்.  ராமதாஸ்:இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்குத் தொடர்ந்து பயிற்சி அளிப்போம் என மத்திய இணையமைச்சர் பல்லம் ராஜு கூறியிருப்பது கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது. தமிழர்களின் உணர்வுகளை மத்திய அரசு மதிக்கவில்லை என்பதையே அமைச்சரின் பேச்சு காட்டுகிறது.

 சென்னை, ஆக. 25: தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிக்காமல் நீலகிரியில் இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு தொடர்ந்து பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்படுவதாக முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா குற்றஞ்சாட்டியுள்ளார்.  இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்படும் பயிற்சியை உடனடியாக நிறுத்த வேண்டும் என்றும் பிரதமருக்கு எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்தில் அவர் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.  இலங்கை விமானப்படை, கப்பற்படை அதிகாரிகளுக்கு நீலகிரி மாவட்டம் வெலிங்டன் மற்றும் தாம்பரத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதற்கு முதல்வர் ஏற்கெனவே கடும் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்திருந்தார். இந்த நிலையில், இலங்கை ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் தொடர்ந்து பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருவதற்கு முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா மீண்டும் கடும் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  இது தொடர்பாக பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங்குக்கு அவர் சனிக்கிழமை (ஆகஸ்ட் 25)  எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்தின் விவரம்:  ""இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதற்கு எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவித்து கடந்த ஜூலை 16-ம் தேதியன்று தங்களுக்கு கடிதம் எழுதினேன். இதை தங்களின் கவனத்துக்கு கொண்டு வர விரும்புகிறேன்.  என்னுடைய கடுமையான எதிர்ப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து, சென்னை தாம்பரம் விமானப்படை நிலையத்தில் தொழில்நுட்ப பயிற்சி பெற்ற இலங்கை விமானப் படை வீரர்கள் 9 பேர் அங்கிருந்து பெங்களூரில் உள்ள எலஹங்கா விமானப்படை நிலையத்துக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டனர்.  அவர்களை சொந்த நாட்டுக்கு அனுப்புவதற்கு பதில் இடமாற்றம் செய்த நடவடிக்கையானது, அந்த நாட்டு வீரர்கள் பயிற்சியை நிறைவு செய்வதில் இந்தியாவுக்கு இருந்த அதீத ஆர்வத்தையும், அக்கறையையும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் வகையில் இருந்தது.  தமிழக அரசுக்குத் தெரியாமல்...இந்திய அரசின் கண்டிக்கத்தக்க அந்தப் போக்கானது, இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளுக்கு வெலிங்டனில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதன் மூலம் தொடர்கிறது.  இலங்கை ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளான தெசநாயகா மொஹட்ட லாலக வெங்க்ரா, ஹேவ வாஸம் கண்டாடக ஆகியோர் நீலகிரி வெலிங்டன் ராணுவ பயிற்சிக் கல்லூரியில் 11 மாத பயிற்சி எடுக்க அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.  அவர்கள் இருவரும் கடந்த மே 19-ம் தேதி முதல் தொடர்ந்து பயிற்சி எடுத்து வருகின்றனர். இந்தப் பயிற்சி குறித்த உண்மைகள் எனது தலைமையிலான அரசுக்கு தெரிவிக்காமலேயே மறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.  மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பில்லை: இந்தச் செயல் தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு கொஞ்சம்கூட மதிப்பளிக்கப்படவில்லை என்பதையே காட்டுகிறது. தமிழக அரசின் கருத்தை கேட்காமலேயே மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட இந்த நடவடிக்கை அதிருப்தி அளிக்கிறது.  எனவே, வெலிங்டன் ராணுவப் பயிற்சிக் கல்லூரியில் இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்படும் பயிற்சியை உடனடியாக நிறுத்த வேண்டும் என்று ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளுக்கு தாங்கள் உத்தரவிடவேண்டும். மேலும் இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களை அவர்கள் நாட்டுக்குத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப உடனடியாக நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும்'' என்று பிரதமருக்கு எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்தில் முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.

 இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிக்காமல் அவர்களைத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா கூறியுள்ளதே திமுகவின் முடிவு என்று அக் கட்சியின் அமைப்புச் செயலாளரும், நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினருமான டி.கே.எஸ்.இளங்கோவன் கூறினார்.  சென்னை அண்ணா அறிவாலயத்தில் சனிக்கிழமை அவர் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் கூறியது:  வெலிங்டன் ராணுவ முகாமில் இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளிக்கக்கூடாது, அவர்களைத் திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா கூறியுள்ளார்.  இந்தக் கருத்துத்தான் திமுகவினுடையதும்.  டெசோ மாநாட்டில் இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்கு இந்தியாவில் எங்கும் பயிற்சி அளிக்கக்கூடாது என்று தீர்மானமே நிறைவேற்றியுள்ளோம். அந்தக் கருத்தை இப்போதும் வலியுறுத்துகிறோம்.  நிலக்கரி சுரங்க ஊழல் தொடர்பாக நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் விவாதிக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே திமுகவின் கருத்து. விவாதம் நடத்தப்படாமல் நடாளுமன்றம் முடக்கப்படுவதால் எந்தப் பயனும் விளையப் போவதில்லை என்றார் அவர்.

மதுரை, ஆக., 10 : டெசோ மாநாட்டில் ஈழம் என்ற வார்த்தையை பயன்படுத்தக் கூடாது என்று மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சகம் டெசோ மாநாட்டு ஒருங்கிணைப்புக் குழுவுக்கு கடிதம் எழுதியிருப்பதாக தகவல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன. இந்த செயல் கருத்துரிமையை பறிக்கும் செயலாகும். இதனை விடுதலை சிறுத்தைகள் கட்சி வன்மையாகக் கண்டிக்கிறது என்று அக்கட்சியின் தலைவர் திருமாவளவன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.மதுரையில் இன்று செய்தியாளர்களை சந்தித்த திருமாவளவன், இந்தியா சுதந்திரப்போராட்ட காலத்தில் எமர்ஜென்சி பீரியட் எனப்படும் அவசர காலத்தில் இருந்த அடக்குமுறையைப் போல இந்த கடிதத்தின் தாக்கம் உள்ளது. டெசோ என்பது தமழீழ ஆதரவைத்தான் குறிக்கும். அப்படிப்பட்ட நிலையில் ஈழம என்ற வார்த்தையை பயன்படுத்தக் கூடாது என்று கூறுவது சரியல்ல. ஆகவே இந்த உத்தரவை திரும்பப் பெற வேண்டும் என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.

சென்னை, ஜூலை 6: சென்னையில் பயிற்சி பெறும் இலங்கை விமானப் படை வீரர்களை பெங்களூருக்கு மாற்றியதற்கு முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா கடும் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  அவர்களுக்கு பெங்களூர் மட்டுமல்ல, நாட்டின் எந்தவொரு இடத்திலும் பயிற்சி அளிக்கக் கூடாது எனவும், உடனடியாக இலங்கைக்கே திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் எனவும் மத்திய அரசை அவர் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.  இதுகுறித்து வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அவர் வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கை: தமிழக மக்களை அவமானப்படுத்தும் வகையில், இலங்கையின் 9 விமானப் படை வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழகத்திலுள்ள தாம்பரம் விமானப் படை நிலையத்தில் ஒன்பது மாதம் தொழில்நுட்பப் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதற்கு கடும் கண்டனத்தை தெரிவித்திருந்தேன்.  தமிழர்களின் உணர்வுகளை சற்றும் மதிக்காமல், தமிழர்களுக்கு எதிரான இந்த செயலை மத்திய அரசு திரும்பப் பெற வேண்டும் என்றும் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். தமிழகத்திலுள்ள அனைத்து எதிர்க்கட்சிகளும் இதே கருத்தைத் தெரிவித்திருந்தன. ஒட்டுமொத்த தமிழ் மக்களும் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்தனர்.  தமிழ் இனத்துக்கு எதிராக...: இலங்கையின் ஒன்பது வீரர்களையும் பெங்களூரில் உள்ள எலகங்கா விமானப் படை நிலையத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதற்காக விமானம் மூலம் மத்திய அரசு வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளது. இதன் மூலம், தமிழர்களுக்கும் தமிழ் இனத்துக்கும் எதிராகச் செயல்படுபவர்களுக்கு சாதகமாக திமுக அங்கம் வகிக்கும் மத்திய அரசு செயல்படுகிறதோ என்ற எண்ணம் தமிழக மக்கள் மத்தியில் எழுந்துள்ளது.  இலங்கையில் தமிழர்களுக்கு எதிராக, போர் விதிமுறைகளை மீறி செயல்பட்டவர்கள் போர்க் குற்றவாளிகள் என ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை மூலம் தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதே தமிழக மக்களின் விருப்பம். இலங்கை விமானப் படை வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதைத் தவிர்த்து விட்டு, பெங்களூரில் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதை தமிழர் எவரும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள் என்றார் ஜெயலலிதா.
