Youth conference in Chennai condemns staging CHOGM in Sri Lanka

A day long international conference of youth held last Saturday in Chennai raised its voice against the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in November this year. The conference decried Colombo government as a fascist, genocidal force that killed over 150,000 Eezham Tamils in the last phase of the 2009 war. Over 700 participants took part in the conference expressing concerns over holding the Commonwealth meeting in Sri Lanka.

Prominent leaders and activists took part in the conference.

The conference accused that even after the war, the militarized SL government has stationed hundreds of thousands of Sinhala military personnel in the homeland of Eezham Tamils.

A resolution passed in the conference pointed out that the genocidal, fascist government in Sri Lanka was was taking up rapid Sinhalisation of the Tamil homeland and that the CHOGM was only an attempt to remove the stains of blood from the SL State.

Organised jointly by Save Tamils, a team of IT students and professionals from Tamil Nadu, and the Students' Struggle Committee for Tamil Eelam, the conference condemned the Indian government for ignoring the sentiments of Eezham Tamils and proceeding to announce Colombo as Commonwealth’s honorary head for the next two years.

Besides demanding that the Commonwealth meeting should not be held in the island, the conference also passed a resolution demanding that a referendum be held among Eezham Tamils living in the island and all over the world on deciding their political solution.

The conference also urged the Tamil Nadu government to pass a resolution against the participation of Indian prime Minister in the CHOGM. The Tamil Nadu government should also take steps to implement economic sanctions on Sri Lanka by India and the Tamil Nadu state.

For the first time in Tamil Nadu, students from London, Kharagpur and also from various districts of the state have participated in the conference extending their solidarity towards the cause of Tamils in Sri Lanka, calling on the Indian government to boycott the Commonwealth Summit to be held in Sri Lanka, the organisers of the event said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

Some excerpts from the press statement follow:

Mr Vaiko, the general secretary of MDMK, reiterated over the history of countries that were expelled from Commonwealth’s nations for committing human rights violations that were many times lesser than the massive structural genocide committed by the Rajapaksa government. He named India as a ‘co-accused’ nation which tries to suppress the arising voices against it for its guardian role played in the genocide by lobbying its ways to enthrone Rajapaksa as the common wealth head. On an ending note he warned that if India wants to preserve its unity with Sri Lanka, it will be only at the cost of shattering the unity within India.

Parimala, Save Tamils Movement, explained about how India betrayed Eezham Tamils since the independence of Sri Lanka.

Comrades K.Venkatraman, the general secretary of Tamil National Communist Party and Thiyagu, general secretary of Tamil National Liberation Movement clearly explained about the principles and various charters of the Commonwealth Council and how Sri Lanka violated all those principles.

Comrade Thiyagu explained the audience about the significance of the boycott CHOGM demand and how it would impact the justice for Eezham Tamils if we fail in this demand. Thiyagu had earlier announced his fast unto death protest demanding the boycott of CHOGM in Sri Lanka starting from September 26, 2013 , the remembrance day of Martyr Dhileepan.

“The Sri Lankan government had dismissed the Chief Justice Shivani Bhandaranayake, jeopardizing the independence of judiciary. When  Fiji, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa can be suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations, why not Sri Lanka, which continues with its structural genocide by destroying temples, churches and mosques?” Prabhakaran, a student of IIT-Kharagpur, asked.

Writer Jeyaprakasam said that Sri Lanka has never been a friendly nation to India. Whereas India sees Pakistan and China as a threat, it refuses to recognize Sri Lanka a potential threat in the south. He stated that India should not participate in the Commonwealth of Nations.

The seven point resolutions passed by the conference are:

1. Sinhala-Buddhist Supremacist Sri Lankan government has violated the 1971 Singapore Declaration of Commonwealth principles of equal rights for all regardless of race, colour, creed or political belief. Hence, this conference urges Commonwealth Nations specifically India not to conduct CHOGM summit in Colombo.
2. This conference urges the Commonwealth Council to expel Sri Lanka from Commonwealth foundation as it has killed more than 1.5 lakh Tamil civilians in the war and for continuing the structural – cultural genocide of Tamils.
3. This conference urges the Indian government to heed to the democratic appeal of 70 million people of Tamil Nadu to change the venue of CHOGM summit out of Sri Lanka. If the summit held in Colombo , India should boycott the CHOGM. The conference congratulates the Canadian Prime Minister’s decision to boycott CHOGM in Colombo. Likewise,this conference urges the Prime Minister of India to boycott the commonwealth summit if it is held in Sri Lanka.
4. This conference appeals the commonwealth council to pass a resolution in the council demanding an independent international investigation into war crimes, genocidal crimes committed against Tamils in Sri Lanka.
5. In order to safeguard Tamils in Sri Lanka being subjected to ethnic cleansing even today by means of militarization and Sinhalicization , this conference appeals to the International community to work for installing a transitional civil administration under the aegis of international community in north eastern part of the island, the homeland of Tamils as a temporary measure.
6. This conference demands a public referendum among Eezham Tamils in Sri Lanka and diaspora countries as a means for Eezham Tamils, being subjected to ethnic cleansing by Sinhala Supremacist Sri Lankan state for the past 60 years, to choose their political solution in a democratic manner.
7. This conference appeals to the government of Tamil Nadu to pass a resolution in Tamil Nadu State Assembly urging the Prime Minister of India to boycott CHOGM if it is held in Sri Lanka.Further, the conference urges the government of Tamil Nadu to implement the earlier passed resolution seeking economic embargo against Sri Lanka in Tamil Nadu and India.

A documentary based on the Tamil Nadu student uprising that challenged establishments’ abetment of the genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation, was released to the public in Chennai on Sunday. Titled “A'rappoar” (Righteous Struggle), the documentary focuses on the student upsurge against the pro-LLRC US Resolution in March 2013. The documentary, screened at Book Point Hall in Anna Salai on Sunday to packed audiences, also saw speakers talking about the continued international injustice to the Eezham Tamil nation and the future of the students’ struggle in Tamil Nadu.

Kollywood Director Ameer, Eezham Tamil poet Kasi Anandan, Thirumurugan Gandhi from the May 17 Movement, K. Venkatraman from the Tamizh Desiya Pothuvudamai Katchi, and director M. Senthamizhan spoke at the event.

The documentary, written and directed by V. Vettrivel Chandrashekar is produced by C. Kabilan from Senkodi Media Works.

Mr. Vettrivel was the author of the short book “Thuruppuch Cheeddu” about K. Muthukkumar, the youth activist who had triggered mass student protests in Tamil Nadu in early 2009 by his self-immolation for the cause of the Eezham Tamils.

He was also assistant director to the movie “Paalai” directed by M. Senthamizhan.

The director of “A'rappoar” also directed the documentary “Ippadikku Thoazhar Sengkodi”, based on grassroots activist Senkodi from Tamil Nadu who had immolated herself for the cause of the three Tamils on death row in the ‘Rajiv Gandhi assassination case’.

Chennai event challenges ICE complicity in Tamil Genocide

Articulating right demands and slogans in Genocide Remembrance events is crucial at a time when the Eezham Tamils in their homeland are barred from even silently mourning their heroes and civilians who sacrificed their lives in the culmination of the genocidal war at Mu’l’li-vaaykkaal, said a Tamil political activist from Jaffna commenting on the slogans used by protestors at the May 19 event at Marina beach in Chennai. Civil society activists, artists, political leaders and ordinary people had participated a mass gathering near the Kannagi statue in the honour of those Eezham Tamils who perished in Sri Lanka’s genocidal war despite dissuasion by the police. Speaking to TamilNet from the gathering, Umar, an activist from the May 17 criticized the failure of UN in preventing the genocide, stating that Sri Lanka must be hauled in the UNSC.

“It is also because of the US operated UN that the Eezham Tamil nation faced the genocide in May 2009. Likewise, the UNHRC has shown repeatedly that it is impotent to address the root cause of the problem and frame a political solution on the basis of Eezham Tamil nationhood. Therefore, if the US and the UN are really sincere, they should take up the case of Tamil genocide by Sri Lanka in the UN Security Council.” Mr. Umar said.

The gathering also saw the participation of MDMK leader Vaiko, Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan, trade union leader Vellaiyan, Aanoor Jegatheesan from the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam, Tapasi Kumaran from the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, and others.

The activists who attended also took an oath to launch protests against Indian companies investing in Sri Lanka, calling for investigation on Indian officials involved in war, boycott Indian national parties like Congress, BJP and CPM that support unitary Sri Lanka, and also to expose those Indian media that cover up the nature of Sri Lanka’s crimes.

The Remembrance event was organized by the May 17 Movement.

Chennai college students on indefinite hunger-strike condemn US resolution

Eight students of Loyola College, Chennai, who have begun an indefinite hunger-strike on Friday calling for a UN referendum among the Eezham Tamils, have also condemned the pro-LLRC US resolution to be tabled at Geneva, accusing it of bailing out genocidal Sri Lanka. Speaking to TamilNet, Mr. Britto, one of the protesting students, outlining the demands of the hunger-strike, said that the current US resolution was a farce that would completely cover-up the genocide of the Eezham Tamils and strengthen the hands of the perpetrators. The protestors also told TamilNet if their hunger-strike was not paid heed to by the Central Government, they would undertake a Civil Disobedience campaign throughout Tamil Nadu to boycott paying taxes to the Indian state that is endorsing the genocide of their brethren.

The eight students from Loyola College had initially planned the protests at the AICUF premises near their college. But after pressure by the police against the protest, as the venue was close to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission, it was changed to another venue near Koyambedu bus stand.

The 8 students from Loyola, Britto, Thileepan, Shaji, Mani, Paarvaidaasan, Piriyan, Paul Kenneth and Leo Stalin, are from different departments.

Speaking to TamilNet from Koyambedu, Mr. Britto said that the proposed US resolution at Geneva was legitimizing the LLRC and thereby “strengthening the institutions of a genocide-committing state.”

“This is a farce of asking a criminal, a criminal accused of the worst crimes against humanity, to investigate his own crimes,” he said.

Besides calling for a referendum among the Eezham Tamils in the homeland, refugees, and the diaspora to decide their own political future, the other demands of protestors include an independent international investigation in Sri Lanka monitored by non-Asian countries.

They have also called for the Indian government to accept the earlier Tamil Nadu assembly’s proceedings and enforce economic sanctions on Sri Lanka and have urged the TN state to shut down the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission.

The protestors have given a call to students across Tamil Nadu to join them in protest.

Likewise, speaking on behalf of the protestors, Mr. Britto urged the diaspora youth to come out on the streets and protest to the establishments until their just demands are met.

சென்னை, செப். 2: இலங்கை கால்பந்து விளையாட்டு வீரர்களுக்கு சென்னையில் பயிற்சி அளித்துள்ளதற்கு கடும் கண்டனத்தை தெரிவித்துள்ள முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா, அவர்களை திருப்பி அனுப்ப உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார். மேலும், நேரு விளையாட்டு அரங்கில் பயிற்சி அளி்க்க அனுமதி அளித்த பொறுப்பு அதிகாரியை தாற்காலிக பணிநீக்கம் செய்யவும் முதல்வர் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார்.இது குறித்து முதல்வர் வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கையில்,இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள் சிங்களர்களுக்கு சமமான உரிமைகளைப் பெறும் வரை அந்நாடு மீது பொருளாதாரத் தடை விதிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்று தமிழக சட்டப் பேரவையில் தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது. அந்த தீர்மானத்தின் மீது மத்திய அரசு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்காமல், தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளை புண்படுத்தும் வகையில், இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு தமிழ்நாட்டில் தொழில்நுட்பப் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதற்கான நடவடிக்கையை எடுத்து வருகிறது.  மத்திய அரசின் இந்த நடவடிக்கையை எதிர்த்து கடும் கண்டனத்தை நான் வெளியிட்டவுடன், இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களை இந்தியாவில் உள்ள வேறு மாநிலத்திற்கு அனுப்பி வைத்து மத்திய அரசு தொடர்ந்து பயிற்சி அளித்து வருகிறது. அண்மையில், இரண்டு இலங்கை ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு வெலிங்டன் ராணுவ பயிற்சிக் கல்லூரியில் பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருவதை அறிந்தவுடன், அவர்களை உடனடியாக இலங்கைக்கு திருப்பி அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று நான் வலியுறுத்தினேன். ஒட்டுமொத்த தமிழகமும் இதே கோரிக்கையை விடுத்தது. ஆனால், மத்திய அரசு அதற்கு சிறிதும் மதிப்பளிக்கவில்லை. மாறாக, இது போன்ற பயிற்சிகள் அளிப்பது நிறுத்தப்பட மாட்டாது என மத்திய அமைச்சர் தெரிவித்து, தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளை புண்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.  இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையில், இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த கால்பந்து விளையாட்டு வீரர்கள்,  தங்களுடைய திறமையை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளும் வகையில், நட்பு ரீதியிலான போட்டிகளில் கலந்து கொள்ள தமிழகம் வர மத்திய அரசு அனுமதி அளித்துள்ளது. மத்திய அரசின் இந்தச் செயல் தமிழக மக்களை அவமானப்படுத்தும் செயல் ஆகும். மத்திய அரசின் இந்தச் செயலுக்கு எனது கடும் கண்டனத்தைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.  இலங்கை நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த கால்பந்து விளையாட்டு வீரர்கள் பயிற்சி பெறும் வகையில், சென்னையில் உள்ள பாரத ரிசர்வ் வங்கியில் பணிபுரியும் அலுவலர் ஒருவரை ராயல் காலேஜ் ஆப் கொழும்பு நிர்வாகம் தொடர்பு கொண்டு, இங்குள்ள கால்பந்து அணிகளுடன் நட்பு ரீதியிலான விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளில் விளையாட ஏற்பாடு செய்யும்படி கேட்டுக் கொண்டதாகவும், அதன்பேரில், அந்த அலுவலர் அதற்கான ஏற்பாட்டை செய்ததாகவும், கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் 30-ல் தமிழகம் வந்த இலங்கை கால்பந்து விளையாட்டு வீரர்கள் மறுநாள் சென்னை சுங்க இலாகா அணியுடன் நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கில் விளையாடியுள்ளதாகவும் தகவல் வந்துள்ளது. இது குறித்து  நடத்தப்பட்ட விசாரணையில், பாரத ரிசர்வ் வங்கி அலுவலர் நட்பு ரீதியிலான கால்பந்து போட்டியை நடத்துவதற்கு வாய்மொழியாக நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கத்தின் பொறுப்பு அதிகாரியை அணுகியதாகவும், அந்த பொறுப்பு அதிகாரி விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளுக்கு நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கத்தை பயன்படுத்த வாய்மொழியாக அனுமதி வழங்கியதாகவும் தெரிய வந்தது.  நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கில் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளை அனுமதிக்க நேரு விளையாட்டரங்க பொறுப்பு அதிகாரிக்கு எந்தவித அதிகாரமும் இல்லை. தமிழ்நாடு விளையாட்டு மேம்பாட்டு ஆணையத்திற்கு தான் அந்த அதிகாரம் உள்ளது. தனக்கு இல்லாத அதிகாரத்தை பயன்படுத்தி இலங்கை விளையாட்டு வீரர்களை நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கில் கால்பந்து விளையாட அனுமதி அளித்ததன் மூலம் தமிழக மக்களின் உணர்வுகளை நேரு விளையாட்டரங்க பொறுப்பு அதிகாரி கொச்சைப் படுத்தியுள்ளார்.  எனவே, அந்த அதிகாரியை தற்காலிக பணிநீக்கம் செய்து துறைரீதியான நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கும்படி தலைமைச் செயலாளருக்கு உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும், இலங்கை கால்பந்து வீரர்களுக்காக எந்த போட்டிகளும் தமிழகத்தில் நடத்தக் கூடாது என்றும், அவர்களை இலங்கைக்கு உடனடியாக திருப்பி அனுப்ப நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.  இதே போன்று வேலம்மாள் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியுடன் கால்பந்து போட்டி விளையாட சென்னை வந்துள்ள இலங்கை, ரத்தினபுராவைச் சேர்ந்த ஹில்பர்ன் இன்டர்நேஷனல் பள்ளியின் 8 மாணவர்கள் மற்றும் ஒரு பயிற்சியாளரையும் திருப்பி அனுப்ப உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளேன் என்று கூறியுள்ளார் முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா.

சரியான நடவடிக்கை. தம் மீது தமிழ் மக்கள் கொண்டுள்ள வெறுப்புக்கு என்ன காரணம் என்பதை திரும்பியவர்கள் சிந்திக்கட்டும். முதல்வரின் நடவடிக்கை பாராட்டுதலுக்குரியது என்றே நான் கருதுகிறேன்.

சபாஷ்.... எல்லாம் இந்த எட்டப்பன் கருணாநிதியின் கையாகாததனம். ஆட்டை கடித்து மாட்டை கடித்து கடைசியில் மனிதனை கடித்த கதையாக, மத்திய அரசு இப்படி நடந்துகொள்வதை எதிர்த்து ஒரு வார்த்தை கூட பேச முடியாத எட்டப்பன் கருணாநிதி ஐ. நா சபையில் தனது தீர்மானத்தை கொடுக்கிறாராம். கூரை ஏறி கோழி பிடிக்க முடியாதவன் வானம் ஏறி வைகுண்டம் போனானாம். வெட்க கேடு.
