Colombo seeks genocidal subordination through military indoctrination of students

A Tamil student from Aaraip-pattai (Aaraiyampathi) in Ma’nmunaip-pattu division of Batticaloa district was rushed to the hospital in serious condition on Saturday, when he attempted to commit suicide by self-poisoning just a few hours before he was supposed to travel to the notorious Minneriya camp of the occupying SL military to attend an enforced indoctrination programme for all new students in order to become eligible for university entrance. The SL military is conducting a genocidal subordination in addition to the psychological pressure. There are students who lost their hard earned university admission as they were not able to secure the money needed to spend on meeting the demands of the military indoctrination programme, under the so-called ‘leadership’ indoctrination, the students from East say.

23,125 students eligible for university entrance under 86 various disciplines throughout the island are to undergo the SL military run indoctrination programme in 21 military camps in three different batches at each camp. The programme lasts for 3 weeks for each batch. Around 8,000 students were ‘trained’ at the military localities across the island in November - December 2013.

In the first batch, 600 Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim students were subjected to the indoctrination programme at the ‘Infantry Training Centre’ of the SL military at the notorious Minneriya camp, where those abducted by the SL military intelligence were earlier taken before they were either slain or subjected to indefinite detention. The SL military also runs so-called rehabilitation programme for former LTTE members at Minneriya.

The training programme for the first batch started on 25 November at Minneriya. On the very first day, the SL military instructors displayed certain photos from the final days of genocidal onslaught on Vanni targeting to inject feelings of inferiority among the Tamil students while making the Sinhala students celebrate a ‘military victory’ singing ‘victory songs’ in Sinhala in a follow-up ‘cultural’ programme a week later.

The SL military instructors verbally abused the Tamil students, who walked out from the show. They had also warned the students that they would ‘identify’ and ‘abduct’ the ‘unruly students’ outside and warned the students ‘not to spoil’ their future.

Following this, the SL military instructors gave a Tamil student from the Faculty of Engineering in Jaffna a harsh military punishment by instructing him to walk round the playground wearing only his underwear. The ‘punishment’ was meted out on the Tamil student stating that he had ignored the ‘procedure’ to cover himself with a towel when changed his underwear inside the male hostel.

While claiming that the military training was seeking a ‘positive thinking’ what takes place in reality was the indoctrination of ‘genocidal thinking’ on Sinhala students, Tamil students who have gone through the first batch have said.

The SL military carried out a genocidal onslaught on the nation of Eezham Tamils, and the so-called military victory was made possible by the powers and countries that abetted the Colombo regime, was the lesson they had learned by going through the SL military’s genocidal training programme, the Tamil students in Batticaloa said.

Every day, given to the Colombo government to rule over Tamils is another ‘milestone’ in the genocide. But, that is what the genocide partners cum engineers sitting in Washington, London and New Delhi want to happen, commented Tamil university student circles and those who watch the new Sinhala military capital taking shape in Valikaamam North of Jaffna.

இதை கப்பல் அல்லது படகில் பொருந்திய பின்பு கடல் எல்லையை நெருக்கும் 100 மீட்டருக்கு முன்பே நமக்கு எச்சரிக்கை மணி ஒலிக்கும். அப்போதும் நம் கப்பல் நம் எல்லைக்குள் வரவில்லை என்றால் கப்பல் தானாகவே நின்றுவிடும். இதனால் எக்காரணத்தை கொண்டும் படகு மற்றும் கப்பல்கள் நமது எல்லையை தாண்ட முடியாது. இதன் மூலம் மீனவர்கள் எல்லை பகுதியை அறிந்து மீன் பிடிக்க முடியும்.

இது இரவிலும், பகலிலும் இயங்கக்கூடியது. இந்த கருவியின் செயல்பாடு வியப்பை தருவதாக உள்ளது. ஆர்.பி. டிரான்ஸ் மீட்டர் எனப்படும் சிக்னல் டிரான்ஸ்மீட்டரை கடற்கரையில் பொருத்த வேண்டும். இந்த ஒரு டிரான்ஸ் மீட்டர் அனைத்து கப்பல்களுக்கும் சிக்னல்களை கொண்டு செல்லும். இந்த சிக்னல் இலங்கை எல்லை தொடங்கும் 100 மீட்டர் முன்பு வரை தொடர்ந்து டிரான்ஸ்மீட் செய்ய வேண்டும்.

இந்த கருவியை அனைத்து கப்பல்களிலும் பொருத்தி விட வேண்டும். கப்பல்களில் பொருத்தப்பட்ட இந்த கருவி டிரான்ஸ்மீட்டர் தரும் சிக்னல்களை உள்வாங்கி கொண்டே இருக்கும். எப்போது நமது கப்பல் இலங்கை எல்லையை நெருக்க போகிறதோ அப்போது 100 மீட்டருக்கு முன்பு சிக்னல் கிடைக்காது. அதனால் மைக்ரோ கண்ட்ரோலரை பயன்படுத்தி கப்பல்களில் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ள அனைத்து ஸ்பீக்கர்களிலும் எச்சரிக்கை மணி ஒலிக்கும். இதன் மூலம் இலங்கை எல்லையின் ஆரம்பத்தை அறிந்து கொண்டு மீனவர்கள் செயல்பட முடியும்.

இதன்மூலம் தமிழக மீனவர்கள் இலங்கை கடல் எல்லைக்குள் நுழைவது முன்பே எச்சரிக்கை மணி ஒலிக்கும் என்பதால் மீனவர்களுக்கு பெரிதும் உதவியாக இருக்கும் என கருதப்படுகிறது. இந்த கருவி ஈரோட்டில் நடந்த மாநில அளவிலன கண்காட்சியில் முதல் பரிசை பெற்று இருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Diaspora youth join Tamil Nadu students in protest

In a demonstration of solidarity with the demands of the Tamil Nadu students’ uprising, Eezham Tamil diaspora youth across several western countries have come out in protest against the pro-LLRC US resolution tabled at Geneva and pushing for a just political solution for the Eezham Tamil nation facing genocidal oppression in its occupied homeland. The protestors were unanimous in rejecting any resolution that binds the Eezham Tamil nation to unitary Sri Lanka. A copy of the US resolution was also burnt in Toronto, where solidarity groups had also participated in protests. While student protests occurred in London, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Toronto, Copenhagen and Oslo on Wednesday, further protests are scheduled in the coming days in major cities in western countries.

Eezham Tamil youth in Copenhagen, Denmark took out a massive rally from the Indian Embassy to the Denmark parliament via the American Embassy. However, the police prevented the protestors from demonstrating outside the US embassy.

The protestors raised slogans against the US for bringing a hollow resolution and to India to bring a stronger resolution to bring justice to the Eezham Tamil nation.

Eezham Tamil youth in Canada initiated a solidarity campaign to support the student uprising underway in Tamil Nadu. A community protest at the US Consulate in Toronto denouncing the LLRC-Based resolution saw the burning of the copy of the resolution by protesters

The York University Tamil Students’ Association initiated the first wave of hunger strikes expected to occur throughout University campuses in Canada according to the media release by the Canada TYO.

The protests in Toronto also saw the participation of activists from several solidarity groups.

"The massive student uprising in Tamil Nadu should be a clear sign to the international community that the national question for Tamils cannot be ignored. Calls for 'reconciliation' and a 'united Sri Lanka' are meaningless unless the legitimate national aspirations of the Tamil people are recognized. Otherwise, the so-called 'peace process' ends up preserving the status quo, and the Sri Lankan state's protracted genocide of Tamils within the island," James Clark, Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, told TamilNet.

“The opinion of students is clear. We reject the LLRC-Based US Resolution. We reject any resolution that doesn’t recognize the Eezham Tamil nation that has faced genocide and whom are entitled to a state of their own. We stand in complete solidarity with the demands of the Tamil Nadu students,” stated Jessica Thyriar, President of the York Federation of Students, the central undergraduate students’ union representing over 55000 students at York University.

“It has been four years since the war has been declared over in the island of Sri Lanka yet the genocide of Tamils continues. It is unbelievable that the international community continues to present meaningless motions that help the Sri Lankan government complete its policy of structural genocide against the Tamil nation. Within the context of the international community repeatedly betraying Tamils, civil society worldwide should take note of the student uprising in Tamil Nadu and offer their complete solidarity to them and the Tamil nation.” Carolyn Hibbs, the President of the York University Graduate Students’ Association representing over 6000 students, told TamilNet.

Speaking to TamilNet, Priyanth Nallaratnam, spokesperson for TYO-Canada, said “Since 2009 the international community has based its approach on the domestic approach of the Sri Lankan government. Historically, time and time again the international community has failed the Tamil nation and it is time that they learn from their mistakes. In light of yet another failure of the IC to provide justice to the Eezham Tamils, it should be noted that any solution that is limited within the unitary state structure of Sri Lanka will not provide any meaningful solution to the Eezham Tamils.”

Protest organized by independent youth activists in front of the US Embassy in London was joined by hundreds of second generation Eezham Tamil youth.

This protest was executed successfully despite the attempts of certain pro-US sectarian groups to dissuade youngsters from participating.

Speaking to TamilNet from the site of the protest, Sathapalan Kanesalingam, an independent student activist at Westminster University and an organizer of the demonstration, opined that it is high time diaspora activists should realize that any resolution based on the LLRC will not be of any use to the Tamils.

“Over here, some people are of the opinion that the US resolution should be supported. But this resolution, both the first draft and the amended version, legitimizing LLRC, can provide no just solution to the Eezham Tamils. We cannot support it meekly this year and go to Geneva the next year and say that it didn’t work. It is against the interests of our nation, and it should be opposed now,” Mr. Kanesalingam said.

Sanju Ganesan of the TYO-UK was of the opinion that “Tamils have waited too long for the international community to take action and it is still failing to find us justice and this is evident through the pro-LLRC resolution that has been passed.”

Adding that the pro-LLRC resolution was supportive to a farce created by a genocidal state, she further said “We will not accept any form of move that compels us to find justice or a political solution within the mechanisms of unitary Sri Lanka. Tamil Eelam is the only solution. Therefore we stand is solidarity with students of Tamil Nadu and show our support. An independent international investigation into all crimes including genocide needs to be done. An independent UN referendum needs to be taken to facilitate the creation of our homeland Tamil Eelam.”

In a separate protest outside the Indian High Commission in London, three Tamil youth are entering the third day of their hunger-strike in solidarity with the demands of the hunger-strikers in Tamil Nadu.

In Oslo, Eezham Tamil youth are on hunger-strike outside the Norway parliament for Wednesday and Thursday.

Eezham Tamil youth in Germany demonstrated outside the Indian Embassy in Berlin and outside the North Rhine-Westphalia Parliament in Dusseldorf.

The protestors in Dusseldorf pinned the LLRC and the Sri Lankan constitution to a coffin to symbolically affirm the pointlessness of any solution within the unitary Sri Lankan state, protesters told TamilNet.

Tamil Nadu students burn US draft resolution

Protest started by the Loyola College students in Chennai against an empty US resolution on Sri Lanka at Geneva and the Tamil Nadu State Government action against the protest, have triggered spontaneous statewide student uprising that is not depending on any political party, news sources in Tamil Nadu said. Students of instituions such as the Annamalai University in Chithamparam and St. Xavier’s College, an autonomous university institution at Paa’laiyang-koaddai in Thirunelveali, have burnt the copies of the US draft resolution tabled at Geneva for discussion on Friday, saying that the draft only bails out the genocide-accused Sri Lankan State. Meanwhile, student protests took place in every part of Tamil Nadu and All Colleges Students Federation for the Liberation of Tamil Eelam has come out with a 9-point demand.

The students of Annamalai University and St. Xaviers College, who are also on a hunger strike, have urged the World Tamils not to be hoodwinked by any “constructive aspects” in any resolution that does not recognize a political solution on the basis of the nationhood of the Eezham Tamils, protestors told TamilNet.

Student protests and hunger strikes have begun in several towns and cities that are historically and geographically significant in setting trends in Tamil Nadu.

Political parties and certain sections that either tried to make benefits by association or tried to infiltrate and hijack were consciously kept out by the protesting students, who this time clearly drew the line between politics and peoples’ struggle.

Reporting only a fraction of the statewide protests, Students of Chennai Ambedkar Law College, Chengalpet Law College, Thirunelveli Manonmaniam Sundararanaar University, Coimbatore Bharatiyar University, Coimbatore Law College, Salem Government Arts College, Pudukottai Mannar Government Arts College, Ramanathapuram Sethupathy Arts College, Athirampattinam Kadar Mohiudeen College, Puducherry Dr. Ambedkar Law College, Tirupathur Sacred Heart College, Vizhuppuram Deivaanai Ammal college and Tiruchy St. Joseph college have begun their protests against the US resolution, with many starting hunger-strikes calling for a UN referendum to determine the national question of the Eezham Tamils and calling for an independent international investigation into the genocidal war crimes of the Sri Lankan State.

Many other college students are also expected to join in the protests in the coming days.

Protestors from South Tamil Nadu told TamilNet that this upsurge of students’ protests, which is happening with a conceptual basis, without affiliation to any political party, would deter those sections in the Tamil polity from toeing a line contradictory to the interests of the genocide-affected nation of Eezham Tamils.

9-point demand of All Colleges Students Federation of Tamil Nadu for the Liberation of Tamil Eelam

The demands put forward by the students

1. We strongly condemn the US-draft resolution. Do not pass it at UNHRC
2. What took place in Ilangkai [Sri Lanka] is not merely war crimes or violations of human rights, but planned genocide
3. International investigation and referendum are the only solutions for the Tamils. Government of India should propose a resolution to bring in international investigation and to conduct a referendum on independent Tamil Eelam.
4. A proposal should be made to remove the Deputy High Commission of the Sinhala chauvinistic State from the Tamil soil [Tamil Nadu]. India should severe all diplomatic relations with Ilangkai [Sri Lanka].
5. Government of India, accepting the request of the Tamil Nadu State Government, should implement economic sanctions on Ilangkai [Sri Lanka].
6. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu State Government, a foreign relations department should be created to assure the security of global Tamils.
7. No Asian country should be a member in the [international] investigation committee.
8. Killing Tamil Nadu fishermen should be stopped immediately.
9. If the Government of India is not finding solution to the question of Eezham Tamils, we will not pay any taxes from Tamil Nadu. We, students, will actively engage in this campaign.

ஆங்கில ஆதிக்கத்தின் நடுவே மாணவர்களுக்குத் தேசிய கீதம், தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்து கற்பிப்பு: இசைப்பள்ளி மூலம் பயிற்சி

ராமநாதபுரம்:ஆங்கில மோகத்தின் நடுவே, மாணவர்களுக்கு தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்து, தேசிய கீதம், தேசிய பாடல்கள் கற்று கொடுத்து, அனைவரும் தடையின்றி தமிழ் இசை பாடல்களை தெரிந்து கொள்ள, தமிழகத்தில் முதன்முறையாக ராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்டத்தில் இசைப்பள்ளி மூலம் பயிற்சி வழங்கி வருகின்றனர்.

தமிழகத்தில், பள்ளி மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் அவசியம் கற்க வேண்டிய பாடல்களான தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்து, தேசியகீதம், தேசியப் பாடல், கொடிப்பாடல், தமிழ்மொழி சிறப்பு, பாரதிதாசன் பாடல், தேவாரம் ஆகியவை மனப்பாடமாக தெரிந்து கொள்வதற்கு, இசைப்பள்ளி மூலம் பயிற்சி வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

ராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்ட இசைப்பள்ளி தலைமை ஆசிரியர் சுரேஷ் கூறியதாவது: பள்ளிகளில் பயிலும் மாணவர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக தமிழ் இசைப்பாடல்களை தெரிந்து இருக்க வேண்டும். அதற்கான பயிற்சிகளை அளிக்க, அரசு உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. நாங்கள் முதற்கட்டமாக சேதுபதி நடுநிலைப்பள்ளியில், 60 மாணவர்கள், மன்னர் மெட்ரிக் பள்ளியில், 50 மாணவர்கள் என, 110பேருக்கு கடந்த 10.10.2012 முதல் 10.1.2013 வரை இசையுடன், பாடல்கள் கற்றுகொடுத்தோம்.தற்போது, 110 மாணவர்களும் நன்கு பாட கற்றுகொண்டுள்ளனர். அடுத்த கட்ட பயிற்சி துவங்கப்பட உள்ளது. இதுபோல் மாவட்டம் முழுவதும் ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்களுக்கு தமிழ் இசைப்பாடல் கற்றுத்தர உள்ளோம், என்றார்.

In a meeting held on Monday at the Jaffna University by the Vice Chancellor Prof Vasanthi Arasaratnam, it was decided to resume classes on Tuesday, after much persuasion by the Rajapaksa-appointed Tamil VC that she would resign if the students were not agreeing for an immediate reopening. The SL Education Secretary has come out with an open threat that the government would close down the university for one year if it were not resuming. The student representatives under pressure agreed for the resumption, but students didn’t come on Tuesday. Only less than 50 students out of a 5000-strong student population were seen at the university. Most of them were emotionally unprepared while their activists are in detention and they were also scared about security in and around the campus, news sources in Jaffna said.

At the meeting on Monday, the student representatives while insisting on the release of the detained students, wanted to discuss the matter of reopening after Pongkal in mid January. But for some unknown reasons, the SL government and the VC were adamant on immediate resumption.

Students are also opposed to conducting the university exams from 16 January. They want their detained comrades to be released to take part in the exams. Otherwise, even if they were released they would automatically lose one year for voicing for the rights of the students and of the people, student circles said.

The final year students of the university would meet on the 10 to discuss about boycotting their exams if the detained comrades are not released, student circles said.

Psychological preparedness of students is the most important requisite in education. Therefore, release of the detained students is the demand of the students and teachers of the university. But the occupying government has something else in its agenda, the university academics were commenting.

The university campus in now surrounded by the SL troops and by its intelligence personnel. Some of them are present inside the campus itself. The situation is another reason for the unwillingness of the students to return.

There is also a fear that if the detained students were not released now they would not be released for years.

The government says open the university, but could we do if the students are not coming. The government only wants to score a point and show it to the international community, commented a teachers’ union representative.

The US embassy and the visiting Canadian minister came out with lip service of adding a sentence in their statements. But practically none in the so-called international community succeeded in driving sense in the minds of the genocidal regime they patronize, commented academic circles in Jaffna.

In a protest march in London from Temple Station to 10 Downing Street on Saturday, Eezham Tamil youth in the UK condemned the harassment of the Jaffna University students and faculty by the occupying military and demanded the immediate release of the students arrested by Sri Lanka’s TID. Raising slogans urging the British government to take action, the protestors also called for an end to the occupation of the Tamil homeland. "The UK government and the co-chairs have a moral and political responsibility in what has been happening to the Eelam Tamils after 2009. It is clear from the brutal repression of the students of Jaffna University, that reconciliation in unitary Sri Lanka means denial of basic civil liberties of the Tamil Nation. This is an aspect of genocide and the UK government should immediately respond to this," Bairavi Ratnabal from TYO-UK told TamilNet.

The demonstration involved a large participation of students from different universities in London. Conveying solidarity with the students in the homeland, the protestors raised slogans that observance of remembrance events is a basic democratic right.

Commenting on the recent harassment of the University faculty by the occupying SLA, Dr. Andy Higginbottom, principal lecturer in Politics and Human Rights at Kingston University, expressed his support for the JUTA. “The Jaffna University’s teachers have the right to organize and support the students. It is worrying that they are also being called for interrogation now. The The march today is imp to keep pressurising the UK govt, but we really need to involve to a greater extent the civil society in the UK, non-Tamil student unions, lecturers and others.”

The protest march was organized by the TYO-UK.

சிறையில் அடைத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள யாழ் பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர்களுக்கு புனர்வாழ்வளிக்கும் இலங்கை அரசின் முடிவுக்கு எதிர்க்கட்சிகள் கடும் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.
மாவீரர் தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடிய யாழ் பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர்கள் வெலிக்கந்த முகாமில் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இவர்கள் புனர்வாழ்வளிக்கப்பட்ட பின்னரே விடுதலை செய்யப்படுவர் என்று பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சகச் செயலாளர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
இது குறித்துப் பேசிய எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவர்கள், இலங்கை அதிபரின் தம்பி என்ற திமிருடன் செயல்படும் கோத்தபாயவுக்கே புனர்வாழ்வளிக்க வேண்டும். பல்கலை மாணவர்களை உடனடியாக விடுதலை செய்யுங்கள் என்று கூறியுள்ளனர்.

A series of protests have been organized outside the British Prime Minister’s Office in 10 Downing Street, London since Monday to condemn the repression of the Jaffna University students by the occupying Sinhala military. Condemning the arrests and detentions of the students and the Sinhala military’s systematic assaults on the civil rights of the Eezham Tamils as a part of the genocide of the Tamil nation, the protestors urged UK and the International Community to ensure the immediate release of the arrested students and to safeguard the democratic rights of the Eezham Tamil nation in the island.

Speaking at the demonstration on Friday, Dr. Andy Higginbottom, principal lecturer in politics and human rights at the Kingston University, said the British government and British politicians have full knowledge of what is happening in the island, urging the Tamils in the UK to mobilize the larger British public.

Speaking to TamilNet from the protests, Sasithar Maheswaran from the TCC-UK said “The arrests and detention of the students is taking place under the Western endorsed rehabilitation and reconciliation model. Anyone who expresses the national aspirations of Eezham Tamils is automatically labelled as terrorists and incarcerated. This is the international community’s solution. This is genocide.”

A petition submitted by TCC-UK to the PMO criticized the UK for its silence. “The UK, which created the modern Sri Lanka state for convenience during the heydays of colonialism, seems little interested in correcting the wrongs of a stained history. Instead it is underwriting the genocidal acts of Sri Lanka state, offering its support at every international fora.”
