Karadiayanaa'ru farmers ignored in agricultural development

The destroyed Karadiayanaa'ru Agrarian Services Centre that caters to the needs of farmers in twenty six agricultural tracts in Batticaloa district has not been repaired and has not been used for the last one year. This centre was completely destroyed in a blast that took place on 26.08.2010 in Karadiayanaa'ru Police Station located in Ea'raavoor-pattu in Chengkaladi DS division of Batticaloa district.

Tamil farmers lament that three SL Deputy Ministers and the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council hail from the district but to their dismay they have not shown any interest in repairing the damaged centre that has been looking after the agricultural needs of about 2,856 farming families doing paddy cultivation in about 10,500 acres of fields.

Farmers  come under the Karadiayanaa'ru Agrarian Service Centre are now being forced to travel to Ka'l'liyalkaaddu store  that is located about 40 km away from Karadiayanaa'ru to purchase their needs such as fertilizer and seed paddy  supplied  under subsidy scheme by spending large amount of money.

The destroyed Karadiayanaa'ru Agrarian Services Centre is located along the A-5 (Chengkaladi-Badulla) highway.

Once in a month SL Deputy Ministers representing Mahinda Rajapakse government in Batticaloa, and the SL Economic Development Minister and presidential sibling Basil Rajapakse attend the meetings of District Development Committee and District Agricultural Committee, but they keep silent in repairing the destroyed Agrarian Centre and to provide assistance to farmers, disappointed cultivators in the district say.
