Ex-LTTE survivors of torture, mysterious injections, harassed with blood tests, stringent restrictions
A 46-year-old former Tamil fighter from Koa'ra'laip-pattu (Vaazaich-cheanai) division of Batticaloa district, who was detained for the first time in 2013 by the occupying Sinhala military, this week revealed that he witnessed at least 15 former LTTE members being giving suspicious injections at the torture chamber of the SL military during his detention. He has also received five injections of unknown substance during the detention and has since lost his ability to concentrate and cannot take on any jobs that require muscle. The survivor also said the SL military has come with stringent instructions not to engage in social work and not to take up any role in rehabilitation or development related organizations at the grassroots. The former LTTE members are also instructed not to take part in the local elections.
The former fighter, who joined the LTTE in 1990 and served the liberation movement until the end of the genocidal war in 2009, had managed to escape arrest and was living with his family. He had once served in the special security division of LTTE Leader V. Pirapharan and the SL military took him into custody at his house in Batticaloa in 2013.
He further says many of senior cadres had received what he feared as ‘mellak-kollum oosi’ (slow death injection) if they were associated with Sea Tiger Special Commander Sosai, Intelligence Wing Chief Poddu Amman or if they had served directly in the units that were associated with the inner circle of LTTE Leader V. Pirapaharan.
In the meantime, another ex-LTTE member who became a secretary in a fisheries society was told to resign from the position.
The SL military intelligence has also been forcing blood tests three times after being released, the former LTTE members in the remote village of Batticaloa said.
Although they were released after ‘military rehabilitation’, the former LTTE members are restricted from getting jobs in other districts or at long distances from their houses in the same district.
If they opt to take up jobs far away, the visiting SL military intelligence harasses their families, they further said.
Every time there is a crime being reported in the area, they are being subjected to interrogations by the SL military intelligence, the former LTTE members said.
The ex-LTTE members were reluctant to provide details that could reveal their identities.
“We have only a few years left. Leave us alone to live peacefully in the remaining time of our lives,” a father of three told TamilNet.
There have been several instances of mysterious deaths occurring among former LTTE members, who have survived torture, prolonged incarceration and the so-called military rehabilitation at the hands of the occupying Sinhala military in the North and East.
