TNA, CaFFE urge people to vote amid attacks, false propaganda

[TamilNet, Friday, 20 September 2013, 11:00 GMT]
The National organizer for Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFE), condemned the widespread involvement of the Sri Lanka military in the Provincial Council elections in Jaffna, and urged the voters the urgent necessity to attend the polling booths without fail to cast their votes. The CaFFE official said that the Elections are a civil activity and only the Police and not the military has the authority to maintain peace and the rule of law. The official also condemned the attack by the military on eight supporters of the TNA candidates and an election monitor on the eve of the election to create a fear psychosis in an attempt to interfere with the election outcome.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) candidates, and other party supporters pointed out that supporters of the Rajapakse Government have issued notices in several areas from Point Pedro to Jaffna asking voters to boycott the elections.

People should ignore these false propaganda leaflets and attend in large numbers to vote, and teach a lesson to the Rajapakse government, the TNA party officials said.

The TNA leader, Sampanthan said the activities of the Rajapakse government interfering in the Northern elections reflect the level of oppression of the Tamil people, and urged the Government to adhere to democratic principles and facilitate a safe atmosphere for people to exercise their right to vote.
