Jaffna University teachers boycott SL-UGC ‘academic reconciliation’

Jaffna University teachers boycott SL-UGC ‘academic reconciliation’

[TamilNet, Thursday, 20 June 2013, 06:05 GMT]
Jaffna University Teachers’ Association boycotted a ‘national’ level conference on the “Role of Higher Education in Reconciliation” hosted in Jaffna last week by genocidal Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission. Even though Colombo media reports said that the conference was a joint venture of the SL-UGC and the University of Jaffna, it neither took place in the Jaffna University premises nor was it participated by the academics of the university. Fearing the prevailing mood at the university, the conference was held almost as a closed-door affair at a hotel in Jaffna. Only the VC and the administration that were obliged to go represented the Jaffna University. Among the 25 speakers brought by the SL-UGC, the star speakers to “set the tone and tempo of the conference,” were ‘Terrorism Professor’ Rohan Gunaratna and Law Professor C.G. Weeramantry.

C.G. Weeramantri, emeritus professor of Monash University in Australia is a former judge and a former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands.

Reconciliation sans justice is the paradigm nowadays, commented academic circles in Jaffna.
Rohan Gunaratna
Terrorsim professor Rohan Gunaratna
Terrorism Professor Rohan Gunaratna is attached to the School of International Studies of the Nanyang Technological University, which is one of the two largest public universities in Singapore.

Those who know the modus operandi of Singapore government institutions said that no one without ‘background’ could find the academic title and space to operate from Singapore in such a field.

Rohan Gunaratna is also a member of the steering committee of George Washington University’s Homeland Security Policy Institute.

Revealing his envisagement for the model of higher education in the island, Rohan Gunaratna, who was allowed to address the convocation of the Ruhuna University in the south of the island last month, said that 20 years ago, of all the academic institutions in the island, the one that had impressed him the most was the Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, which has now become General Sir John Kotalawala University.

The Terrorism Professor was with all praises for the defence university and its Vice-Chancellor General Milinda Peiris.

In Jaffna, he was speaking on “Post-conflict Strategy: Promoting Moderation, Tolerance and Co-existence.”

His remarks in Jaffna, shedding crocodile tears that the people of Jaffna are not taking care of the former LTTE cadres, have enraged human rights and social activists circles, news sources said.

After doing everything to wreck the liberation fighters of a nation physically and psychologically, and after allowing the continued abuse of them in every respect by the occupying Sinhala military, when has the International Community of Establishments restored the power of the Tamil people, entrusting them with the task of rehabilitation of the cadres, the activists asked.

The real rehabilitation, which is ultimately connected to the self-esteem of the cadres, comes only with the restoration of the sovereignty of the nation of Eezham Tamils, they said.

Whoever was behind the SL-UGC conference, Rohan Gunaratna’s presence made many in Jaffna to easily grasp the agenda as one set by military minds to cover the crimes and to intimidate the academics, especially the Tamil academics, to accept and fit into the militarised reconciliation and unification of the island under the Sinhala State.

Starting his career as a reporter to Colombo-based The Island in the first half of 1980s, the fabricated and twisted stories written by Rohan Gunaratna, as though he had seen them by his own eyes in Jaffna, are still remembered by many old-timers in the media circles of Jaffna.

Of ‘academic reconciliation’ orchestrated from some quarters, political observers cited another example of English Professor Rajiva Wijesinha, who was steadfastly denying even an iota of crime committed by the Rajapaksa regime, compiling a Sinhala-Tamil-English poetry anthology to prove affinities of higher minds in the island, and another English professor launching that in the SL High Commission in Canada.

Those who say that it is the diaspora that misleads the Tamils in the island should see the sentiments expressed by the academics of the Jaffna University in boycotting the SL-UGC conference, the political observers further cited.

However, academics and the public in Jaffna were astonished to learn that a well-known professor couple coming from the Eastern University was in a situation to participate the conference.

When all the Tamils were silent, a person who was conspicuous at the conference in backing Rohan Gunaratna, was a diaspora visitor from the UK, Mr M Sooriasegaram. He usually poses himself as a Leftist and anti-imperialist.

But, Rohan Gunaratna was countered and questioned by Mr S Thavarasa, a former EPDP parliamentarian from Jaffna.

A diaspora stalwart from the USA, now in the service of the occupying Sinhala governor, was also seen at the conference.

SL military begins war on Jaffna University teachers

SL military begins war on Jaffna University teachers

[TamilNet, Saturday, 22 December 2012, 09:37 GMT]
The telephone summoning of the Jaffna University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) president and head of English language teaching at the university, A Rajakumaran, to the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) of occupying Sri Lanka on Friday is widely seen in the university circles as the beginning of a direct war on the Tamil university teachers by the occupying State. Rajakumaran is summoned in connection with his media statement, especially to the BBC, on the student protest in the university and in connection with his reported comments on the views that in future the teachers’ union and the students’ union should jointly observe the Heroes Day as a measure against situations such as the one unfolded this year.

Hathurusinghe meeting at Palaali
The mood of the Jaffna University academics listening to the occupying SL Commander Maj Gen Mahinda Hathurusinghe at Palaali on Friday

The occupying SL military commander calling the Vice Chancellor, Deans and Heads of the Departments to Palaali, and the summoning of the university teachers’ union president to the TID show the beginning of a new phase of SL militarisation of the university education of Eezham Tamils, Jaffna University circles said.

The Heads and Deans who went with the Vice Chancellor and parents of the detained students to meet the SL commander Hathurusinghe at Palaali in the hope of getting the release of the detained students were thoroughly dissatisfied by the treatment meted out to them.

The way Mathematics Head, Professor K. Satkunarajah and Christian Civilisation Head, Rev. K. Pulendran telling their opinion were interrupted and stopped by Hathurusinghe has shocked the academics.

Arts Dean, Prof V.P. Sivanathan, Science Dean, Prof Kandasamy, Commerce Dean, Prof Vel Nampi, Graduate Studies Dean, Prof S. Sathiyaseelan, Prof Mihinthan of the Agriculture Faculty, History Head, Prof P. Pushparatnam and Fine Arts Head Prof Krishnaveny were among the academics who went to Palaali on Friday.

On Wednesday the student union representatives have said that the students would not drop the protest and attend the classes unless the detained student leaders sent for ‘rehabilitation’ by the SL military are released.

The Arts and Science faculties have most of the students of the university

Meanwhile, the Medical Faculty students are silently attending classes on a tacit understanding, university circles said. The General Hospital in Jaffna is also a Teaching Hospital of the university.

Occupying SL military and a paramilitary collaborating with it entered the Gents and Ladies Hostels of the university and attacked students when they were silently observing the Heroes Day on 27 November. The following day, when the students were protesting the attack in a peaceful demonstration, the SL military, police, and paramilitary again attacked them.

As the public opinion and international opinion were mounting against the SL government and its military in Jaffna, with sheer disregard the SL government went further in arresting and detaining the student leaders and activists under fabricated ‘terrorism’ charges.

Colombo also accuses the students that they are directed and funded by the diaspora.

Releasing the detained students is our discretion. They have been sent for ‘rehabilitation’. Don’t wait for their release to resume classes. The university administration and departments should start classes immediately even if no students come, is the position of the SL military occupying Jaffna and the SL Defence Secretary and presidential sibling Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The boycotting students and the teachers showing solidarity are intimidated individually and collectively by the occupying military.

Losing all faith in the government in Colombo, the students have appealed to the International Community.

The Jaffna University situation has evoked sympathy and solidarity for the students from several quarters, locally and internationally.

But, two key players, New Delhi and Washington are still playing along with the genocidal government in Colombo against Eezham Tamils, political observers in Jaffna said.

The Heroes Day oppression in Jaffna by the occupying SL military started in Nov 2009, when the Indian foreign minister chose to visit Jaffna on that day. In this year November’s incidents an allegedly India-backed paramilitary collaborated with the SL military, news sources in Jaffna said.

The US embassy in Colombo that came out with one-sentence concern on the students issue treated it secondary to the attack on journalists the same day.

Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe’s placement in Jaffna by Colombo, as the commander of the occupying Sinhala forces with a deep plan of militarising the rule on Eezham Tamils, enjoys understanding and blessings of the international abetters of Colombo, political observers say. Hathurusinghe, within few months of his appointment in Jaffna, was awarded Gucci Peace Prize at a function in Philippines. SL military website said that this was an Asian equivalent of Nobel Peace Prize.

Jaffna University teachers remind SL President about rule of law

Jaffna University teachers remind SL President about rule of law

[TamilNet, Friday, 07 December 2012, 12:59 GMT]
“There is now no anti-state terrorism in Jaffna. An important part of consolidating peace is for the State to conduct itself in a manner that induces respect for the rule of law,” reminded Jaffna University Science Teachers’ Association in an appeal sent on Friday to Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapksa on grave and dangerous plight of students at the University of Jaffna. “Your Excellency well knows, having been in politics for several decades and in the center of two Southern insurgencies, that the defeat of an insurgent force does not extinguish the feelings or causes that gave rise to it. Such feelings are not a police matter, but are rather to be handled as part of the political task of reconciliation and rebuilding,” the academics reminded the SL President further.

The Science Teachers’ Association of the university staged a demonstration in front of the Vice Chancellor’s office on Friday morning, condemning the irresponsible behaviour of the university administration.

The demonstrating science academics accused the university administration for the plight of the detained students. Without the release of the students there could be no talk on dropping the boycott, the demonstrators said.

While the Medical Dean, who on Thursday handed over five students of his faculty to the SL Military Intelligence, accuses the Arts Faculty students for causing trouble in the university, Friday’s demonstration by the Science Teachers’ Association has set a significant trend, observers of the university situation said.

The Medical Dean Prof Balakumaran and academics of the faculty Dr. S. Raviraj and Dr. T. Mukunthan, who handed over ‘wanted’ medical faculty students to SL Military Intelligence, face the brunt of criticism in the university circles.

The Science Teachers’ Association in its letter on Friday said: “The practice of the University authorities ‘handing over’ students gives rise to some questions and we are not sure of the legal situation.”

However, the science academics also implied that the prevailing situation is such that parents of the students wish the university to get involved, for the sake of the safety of the ‘wanted’ students.

Even lawyers are afraid to get involved in representing university students and advise them to go through the university, the science academics said.

“What does concern us however is that, while complying with police requests to hand over students the University authorities fail to question the police as to the reasons and to seek speedy resolution,” the science academics clarified their position on the protest against the university administration.

The appeal of the Science Teachers’ Association was testifying to the legality and innocence of the Jaffna University students.

[..] “Dragging innocent students through police stations and police cells, as happened in the 1970s and 1980s, is frightening at the start and then hardens them and breeds contempt for the law and for the officers entrusted to uphold it. Where there should be trust and co-operation there is fear, resentment, and then defiance. Surely, we do not want the consequences of that again,” the academics said in their appeal.
