SL military governor builds expensive bungalow, diverts aid to Sinhala colonists
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 28 December 2011, 12:22 GMT]The estimated cost of the modern bungalow now under construction in the Old Park for the use of Major General (retired) G.A.Chandrasiri in Jaffna has exceeded 190 million rupees, informed sources in Jaffna told TamilNet. For comparison, the annual expenditure for the education of the Northern Province stands at 250 million rupees. Questioning the need for such an expensive bungalow for the SL military governor in Jaffna, civil officials in Jaffna blamed G.A. Chandrasiri for meddling with the disbursement of aid in the province. G.A.Chandrasiri, has directed that fifteen sewing machines out of 65 that were allocated for distribution among war widows in the five districts of the Northern Province should be distributed to encroached Sinhalese families in Kaithadi-Naavatkuzhi in Jaffna district.
The SL military governor has issued this directive to local authorities in the district when the list of beneficiaries was submitted for approval by the provincial local government ministry.
G.A. Chandrasiri had deleted fifteen names of war widows from the list and included names of fifteen encroached Sinhalese at Naavatkuzhi in Jaffna.
Maj. Gen. Chandrasiri had earlier directed that a consignment of tractors and bicycles donated by the Government of India for the use of war-affected Tamils in the province to Sinhalese, who had encroached Ma'nal-Aa'ru (renamed in Sinhala to Weli Oya).
NPC officials responsible for the expenditure keep mum without uttering a word against the abuse of power and finances of the council and the dictatorial attitude of the Colonial Governor due to fear and intimidation.
In the meantime, the SL governor needs further 40% of funds to complete the construction of his bungalow that is being carried out under the direct control of the Department of Building employing one hundred percent Sinhala work force.
Quarters of Sinhala employees of the bungalow are also under construction.
Civil sources say that a Sinhala colony is being setup in the vicinity of colonial bungalow.
The SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to declare open the colonial governor’s bungalow, sources close to Chandrasiri said.
