London demonstrators urge UK, India to act through Commonwealth

Gathering at 10 Downing Street in front of the residence of the British Prime Minister on Monday, Eezham Tamils in the UK remembered the 29th anniversary of the Black July massacre, urging for the expulsion of Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth and for Britain to boycott the CHOGM meeting scheduled to take place in the island next year. “During the 1983 pogrom, the Eezham Tamils could flee to the North as a sanctuary. Now, the extensive land grabs and militarization of the Tamil homeland has made it unsafe for them even in their home. The International Community and especially India should take responsibility for their calculated silence that has allowed this to happen,” Ravi Kumar from the British Tamils Forum (BTF) told TamilNet.

Speaking at the event, Rasiah Jeyarajah from the BTF briefly gave the history of riots, pogroms against the Tamils ever since 1948, calling it a “continuous systematic genocide”. Arguing that Tamils have no freedom of speech and nowhere to settle peacefully in their homeland, he referred to Sinhala colonization, the encroaching of the spaces of Tamil fishermen and farmers, white van abductions and the various threats faced by political prisoners detained without trials.

He further demanded an independent international investigation, an immediate halt to land grabs in the Tamil homeland, and the release of all Tamil political prisoners.

Referring to the refugee crisis created by systematic repression and militarization of the Tamil homeland Jan Jananayagam from TAG-UK said that “Tamil diaspora must demand that Sri Lanka’s key trading partners take some responsibility for the resulting refugee crisis. These trading partners directly or indirectly financed the expansion of the hugely problematic ethnically pure military. They continue to train and equip it.”

“So also must the co-chairs, who oversaw the failed process that has resulted in this mess, take responsibility. They remain engaged in Sri Lanka in multiple ways including trade, military cooperation and sport and must also take responsibility for the refugee flows.”

Speaking to TamilNet, Ms. Jananayagam said: “I think we now have some level of international consensus that the conditions that created Black July are very much still alive. The question then is how we can ensure that international mechanisms such as R2P are able to cope with future eruptions of similar violence.”

Emerging logistics blueprint of Sri Lanka's White Van operations

Tamils Against Genocide (TAG), a non-profit litigation and advocacy group based in the U.S., has pieced together an operational blueprint of Sri Lanka's White Van abductions, and the complicity of State Institutions. The blueprint is based on affidavits from surviving abductees, a video deposition from an ex-member of Liberation Tigers who was spared execution at the last moment, information revealed from recent capture of white van abductors in the South, and other circumstantial evidence including open death threats issued by Sri Lanka's Defense Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapakse. TAG concludes that the white van phenomenon is not a random occurrence of isolated events, but a systemic well-organized criminal enterprise carried out by independently operating cells consisting of criminal gangs and military personnel and activated by directives from high level State officials.

"In their dormant or active status, the persistent and ubiquitous threat of white van networks is the sine qua non of Sri Lanka’s de facto institutionalized culture of impunity. The sustained operability of white van networks, and the culture of impunity they create and within which they operate, are necessary to undermine, if not suspend, the fundamental liberties of free speech, free association, and due process that typically animate active citizenship and meaningful democratic participation," TAG says in the report.

State institutions collude to provide the criminal network wide latitude in the abductions, which is followed by up to four additional phases the victim passes through, if the victim escapes murder, according to the report:

Abduction: Criminal gangs, or military personnel in civil uniform abduct targeted Tamils; abductions get converted to 'arrests' if there is public outcry;
Detention: Black sites run in Army camps, or in police custody, torture/interrogation carried out under ER without Court intervention;
Incarceration: Court, especially Puthukkoadai Court located near, and under the influence the White Van command hierarchy, orders incarceration routinely with coerced confessions. The prison authorities provide fluidity to move detainees around within the detention complex;
Release: Detainees fortunate to obtain release are under continuous surveillance; and
Post Release: Many who are released are re-arrested or re-abducted, and some escape to seek asylum in other countries.

The report provides detailed maps of the detention complexes used in the white van networks, one centered in Colombo, and the other in the South of Colombo.

The video deposition referenced in the report and attached with this story, TAG said, provides corroborating evidence to the white van operations from an demobilized ex-combatant who escaped from the jaws of death from the criminal gang operating under the direction of the command hierarchy. Vadivel Muhunthan, was first targetted for assassination in Jaffna, and later was abducted in Colombo (marked 4 in the Colombo map, GPS: 6°56'33.87" N, 79°51'46.48" E) near Kotahena Government Tamil school in 2009, incarcerated, tortured, released, re-abducted and tortured, and incarcerated again. He escaped from the jaws of death to a European country where he has been granted asylum, according to the deposition.

The report spotlights the basis of the Rajapakse administration's totalitarian, yet tenuous grip on the militarized republic as being reducible to two factors: Sinhala-Buddhist majoritarianism and state-sponsored white van networks. The report points out that while Sinhala-Buddhist majoritarianism has been a persistent feature abetting post-colonial Sri Lanka’s progressive evisceration of basic Tamil liberties, white van networks emerged during the armed conflict as national security legislation expanded, and continue to operate post-war.

TAG-UK's Jan Jananayagam told TamilNet, "It is well known that Sri Lanka has long relied on arbitrary arrest, detention without charge, torture and disappearance to suppress dissent. We have now established how the ‘white van’ abduction sequence is an indispensable part of the state machinery used to implement the first stage of ‘disappearances'.

"The machinery of state sponsored disappearances was previously used to instill an atmosphere of fear among the Tamil population and thus control them. It is now also used by the Rajapakses to consolidate regime survival, suppress peaceful dissent and democratic opposition," Ms.Jananayagam added.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse is a dual U.S. and Sri Lankan citizen. While, the U.S. has articulated that upholding human-rights across the world is a priority in U.S.'s foreign policy, Tamil political observers said that it remains to be seen to what level of culpability Sri Lanka's violations of fundamental rights can rise before U.S.'s threshold for tolerance is breached and U.S. confronts its own citizen's criminality in issuing death threats openly and his alleged complicity in war-crimes.

Fasting in London against genocidal Sri Lanka timed for Black July, Olympics

The Black July remembrance event held at London on Sunday addressed the systematic injustice that Sri Lanka had been meting out to the Tamils, with activists placing emphasis on the protracted nature of genocide Eezham Tamils face in unitary Sri Lanka. Gobi Sivanthan, a Tamil youth activist, began his hunger-strike vigil which will end on the Olympics closing ceremony on August 12 demanding, among others, the immediate halting of land grabs in the Tamil homeland. Conveying solidarity with the demands of the demonstrators, Kurdish and British activists who spoke at the event urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to immediately suspend Sri Lanka from the 2012 London Olympics. “States committing genocide should not be part of Olympic games,” Akif Wan, a representative from the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) said, speaking at the event.

Black July commemorations are held by Tamils across the world every year to remember over 4000 Tamils who perished in a pogrom organized by the UNP regime in 1983 in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Wan, observing the parallels between the regimes in Turkey and Sri Lanka and the condition of the Kurdish and the Eezham Tamil nation, stressed that Tamils should have the right to self-determination, the choice to decide by themselves their political future.

Condemning the brutal treatment of Tamil political prisoners, Dr. Andrew Higginbottom, lecturer in Politics and Human Rights at Kingston University argued for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.

“Furthermore, special Sri Lankan squads are chasing down former prisoners and persecuting them even further. Sri Lanka is trying to imprison the whole of Tamil society. We demand an end to all such harassment, and that the UN initiates a genuinely independent international inquiry to investigate this amongst a huge range of human rights violations taking place,” he added.

Referring to the colonization of the Tamil homeland, he said that while thousands of Tamil families are being denied the right of return, the Sri Lankan state is shipping in Sinhalese settlers onto their land.

“This is genocide. We demand an end to the colonial settlement of the Tamil homeland, and all internationally financed so called infrastructure projects facilitating the land grab,” he said, urging the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend Sri Lanka from the Olympics and the UK government to ban Sri Lankan state officials from visiting either the opening or closing ceremonies.

Former TNA parliamentarian Jeyanandamoorthy said that after 2009, the diaspora should continuously tell the world establishments that they will not let down the ideals of the national liberation struggle.

“The world establishments can try to stop or give false promises to divert our struggle. Eezham Tamils should not be fooled by this. After Mu'l'livaaykkaal, the diaspora are staging non-violent protests to convince the international community. If these are rejected, the methods may change,” he said.

Petitions submitted by the TCC-UK to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of UK, and the IOC demanded the barring of Sri Lanka’s participation in the London Olympics.

“The expected participation of current and previous leaders of Sri Lanka who had directly orchestrated, as agents of the state, the crime of genocide, however, stands to overshadow celebrations and raise questions about the validity of the UK’s stated commitment to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,” the petition to LOCOG and FCO read.

The event in London, organized by the Tamil Coordinating Committee-UK (TCC-UK), started as a procession from West Ham Park, culminating at the site at Stratford where Mr. Sivanthan will be carrying out his hunger-strike.

“The most important thing now is to raise attention on and to halt the genocidal land grabs in the Tamil homeland which the Sri Lankan state is systematically doing with the intention of breaking the territorial integrity of our nation,” Mr. Sivanthan told TamilNet.

A further demonstration on 27th July, the day of the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, has been planned to protest the presence of Sri Lanka at the event, organizers of Sunday's protest said.

SL minister Badurdeen competes with SLA on appropriating lands in Vanni amid protests

While more than 2,000 war-affected families are struggling without lands in Karaithu'raip-pattu division of Mullaiththeevu district, Sri Lankan minister of Trade, Rishard Badurdeen, has planned to appropriate 1,500 acres of forest land along Mu'l'liyava'lai - Nedungkea'ni Road promising the lands to his supporters from elsewhere in the island, sources at Karaithu'raippattu divisional secretariat told TamilNet. Even the occupying SLA had opposed the move, but the SL minister has exerted pressure from the top to implement his plan, the sources further said. In the meantime, protests against the SL minister, who is blamed for violent attack on the court complex in Mannaar is being stepped up by the lawyers, who have also protested against the attack on the residence of Point Pedro District Judge on Wednesday.

The Divisional Secretary of Karaithu'raip-pattu has received a ‘personal offer’ from the notorious SL minister that he was prepared to share 50% of the sales from the sales of the trees to be felled in the lands with the divisional secretary.

The divisional secretary has already sold the trees from a 500 acre land which was given to a Sinhala businessman from the south of the island for sand scooping, civil officials in Mullaiththeevu told TamilNet.

The officials also said Tamil civil officials who get trapped by their wrongdoings are deployed by the SL ministers and the officials of the occupying SL military in their programme of committing structural genocide on the country of Eezham Tamils.

The SL minister has provided most of the land plots in Karaithu'raippattu to rich businessmen outside Vanni, informed sources said, adding that only some of the lands are to be given to resettling Muslims.

Muslims had been living in Neeraavip-piddi and Kichchaapuram before they were evicted by the LTTE in 1990. Most of them have now returned to their villages.

The SL minister has been engaged in strengthening his voter-base creating divisions among the resettling people in Mannaar and Mullaiththeevu districts.

Protesting lawyers in Jaffna on Friday shouted slogans ‘Rishard, Rishard go home’, ‘Arrest Rishard’, ‘Don't create divisions’ and ‘We want justice’.

Lawyers and legal activists in South have also engaged in protests expressing solidarity with the judges and lawyers in North.

The protesting legal activists, who gathered at the premises of Jaffna Court also voiced against the recent attack on the house of Point Pedro District Judge Srinithy Nandasekaran.

SL military intelligence operatives are believed to be behind the attack on Wednesday night.

Kanakalingam Kesavan, the secretary of Jaffna Lawyers Association, on Friday said that the association has passed a resolution against SL Minister Rishard Badurdeen's phone threat to Mannaar Judge and against the attack on Srinithy's official residence. He also said that the lawyers would continue to boycott their work demanding action on SL minister Rishard Badurdeen.

உலகின் மிகப் பெரிய விளையாட்டான ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டி லண்டனில் நாளை (27-ந்தேதி) தொடங்கி ஆகஸ்டு 12-ந்தேதி வரை நடக்கிறது. ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியின் தொடக்க விழா நாளை கோலாகலமாக நடக்கிறது. இந்த தொடக்க விழாவில் இலங்கை அதிபர் ராஜபக்சே கலந்து கொள்கிறார். ராஜபக்சே லண்டன் செல்ல இருக்கும் தகவலை அவரது செய்தி தொடர்பாளர் ஜெயசேகரா உறுதிப்படுத்தி உள்ளார்.

ஒலிம்பிக் தொடக்க விழாவில் பங்கேற்க இருக்கும், ராஜபக்சேவுக்கு எதிராக போராட்டம் நடத்த லண்டனில் உள்ள தமிழர்கள் திட்டமிட்டு உள்ளனர். இதை அங்கிருந்து வெளிவரும் “தி இன்டிபென்டன்ட்” என்ற பத்திரிகை தெரிவித்துள்ளது. எலிசபெத் மகாராணியின் வைர விழாவில் பங்கேற்க லண்டன் சென்று இருந்த ராஜபக்சேவுக்கு எதிராக ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தமிழர்கள் ஏற்கனவே போராட்டம் நடத்தி இருந்தனர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ராஜபக்சே ஒலிம்பிக் தொடக்க விழாவுக்காக லண்டன் அழைக்கப்பட்டது முற்றிலும் பொருத்தமற்றது என்று இனப் படுகொலைக்கு எதிரான தமிழர்கள் அமைப்பை சேர்ந்த ஜான் ஜனநாயகம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். லண்டன் செல்ல உள்ள இலங்கை குழுவுக்கு எதிராக சட்ட நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வாய்ப்புள்ளதாக உலக தமிழர் பேரவையின் பேச்சாளர் சுரேன சுரேந்திரன் கூறியுள்ளார்.

மேலும் அவர் கூறும் போது ஒரு நாட்டின் தலைவர் என்ற போர்வையில் இருந்தே அவர் போர் குற்றச்சாட்டுகளில் இருந்து தப்பித்து கொள்கிறார் என்றார்.

லண்டன், ஜூலை 26 : லண்டனில் நாளை துவங்க உள்ள ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியின் துவக்க விழாவில் இலங்கை அதிபர் மகிந்த ராஜபக்சே பங்கேற்க உள்ளதாக தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.இந்நிலையில், ராஜபக்சேவுக்கு எதிராக, லண்டனில் பெரிய அளவில் போராட்டம் நடத்த அங்குள்ள தமிழர்கள் தயாராகி வருவதாக லண்டனில் வெளியாகும் ஆங்கில நாளேடு செய்தி வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

9 ஆம் வகுப்பில் இருந்து தமிழ்ப்பாடநூல்களில் வாழ்த்துப் பகுதியில் முதலில் இறை வாழ்த்தும் அடுத்துத் தமிழ் வாழ்த்தும் இடம் பெறும். ஆனால், இப்பொழுது தமிழ்வாழ்த்துப் பகுதி எடுக்கப்பட்டு விட்டது.கருணாநிதியின் செம்மொழிப்பாடல் இடம் பெறுவதற்காகத்தான் இவை எடுக்கப்பட்டன எனப் பாடநூல் குழுவினர் வழி அறிய வருகிறது.

செம்மொழிப்பாடல், பாடப்புத்தகத்தில் இடம் பெறாத பொழுது தமிழ் வாழ்த்துப்பகுதியை எடுக்க வேண்டிய தேவையே இல்லை.மேலும், செம்மொழிப்பாடலை எடுத்தபின்பு தமிழ் வாழ்த்தைப் பள்ளிக் கல்வித்துறையினர் ஏன் சேர்க்கவில்லை.

நாட்டுப்பாடல்

எல்லாப் பாட நூல்களிலும் ‘நீராரும் கடலுடுத்த’ எனத் தொடங்கும் தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்து உள்ளதே. அது போதாதா என்கின்றனராம் அவர்கள்.சனகனமண என்னும் நாட்டுப்பாடல் எல்லாப் பாடங்களிலும இருந்தாலும் நாடடு வாழ்த்துப்பாடலும இடம் பெறுகிறது. அவ்வாறிருக்க தமிழ் மொழி வாழ்த்தை எடுக்க வேண்டிய தேவை என்ன?

பள்ளிக்கல்வித்துறை சமச்சீர்க்கல்வி எனக் கூறிக்கொண்டு பழந்தமிழ் இலக்கியங்கள் கற்பிக்கப்படுவதையும் குறைத்துள்ளது ஏன்? சமச்சீர்க்கல்வி அறிமுகப்படுத்துவதற்கு முன்பு 9 ஆம் வகுப்பில் 7 பிரிவுகளில் 24 இலக்கியங்கள் இருந்துள்ளன. 10 ஆம் வகுப்பில் 7 பிரிவுகளில் 28 இலக்கியங்கள் இருந்துள்ளன. ஆனால், சமச்சீர்க்கல்வி அறிமுகத்திற்குப்பின் 9 ஆம் வகுப்பில் 19 இலக்கியங்களும் 10 ஆம் வகுப்பில் 16 இலக்கியங்களும் மட்டுமே உள்ளன. மனப்பாடப்பகுதி வரிகளும் குறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

சுற்றறிக்கை

சமச்சீர்க்கல்வி என்ற போர்வையில் தமிழுக்கு எதிரான செயல்பாட்டை மேற்கொண்ட தமிழ்ப்பகைவர்கள் யார்? முந்தைய ஆட்சியில் நடந்த தவறு என்று விட்டுவிடாமல் தமிழ்த்தேசிய உணர்விற்கு மதிப்பளிக்கும் இப்போதைய அரசு இதனை உடனே சரி செய்ய வேண்டும்.

6 ஆம் வகுப்பில் இருந்தே வெவ்வேறு தமிழ் வாழ்த்துப்பாடல்களை ஒவ்வொரு வகுப்பிற்கும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி அவற்றை மனப்பாடப் பகுதியாகவும் அறிவித்துச் சுற்றறிக்கை மூலம் பள்ளிகளுக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்க வேண்டும்.

இவ்வாறு அவர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
