Buddhist monk forcibly removes Pi'l'laiyaar statue from Saiva temple in Ampaa'rai

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 August 2012, 22:55 GMT]
A gang led by a Buddhist monk, on 06 August forcibly removed the eight decade old statue of the main deity (Pi'l'laiyaar) from Sri Chiththi-vinaayakar Koayil, which is located at Paanama junction along Kalmunai-Paanama coastal road in the Ampaa'rai district. More than two hundred Saiva families in the area use to visit the temple to perform their rituals and to attend pooja. Two months ago, a Pi'l'laiyaar statue from a Saiva temple in Polonnaruwa district was forcibly removed from the ‘Moolasthanam’. Likewise, another Pi'l'laiyaar statue from a Vinaayakar temple located in the border village Punaanai in Batticaloa district along Colombo-Batticaloa highway was also forcibly taken over by a Buddhist monk.

Saiva devotees in Pa'nama area said the latest act of desecrating the temple was committed with the assistance of the chairman of Paanamai Preathesiya Saba, who is a brother of the monk. The Buddhist monk and his family members have been causing hardships to Tamil villagers residing in the area.

The temple was earlier situated closer to the Buddhist vihara at Panama junction.

Later, the temple was shifted to a new locality. The Pi'l'laiyaar statue in the old koayil was taken out and installed in the new koayil and consecrated.

Since then the number of devotees visiting the Buddhist Vihare has declined.

The monk in charge of the Vihara then decided to bring back the Pi'l'laiyar deity from the relocated koayil to the old temple situated close to the Buddhist temple, the Saiva devotees say.

Complaints made by Saivaites of the area with the SL Police against the forcible removal of Pi'l'laiyaar deity failed to bring any response, they further said.

Statues disappear from Saiva temples in Batticaloa district: TNA MP

Statues disappear from Saiva temples in Batticaloa district: TNA MP

[TamilNet, Sunday, 13 May 2012, 01:31 GMT]
The statue of the chief deity of Pi'l'laiyaar temple in Punaanai, situated 52 km northwest of Batticaloa, has been reported missing after the occupation of a plot of land close to the temple by a Buddhist monk sent by Colombo-based Buddhist organizations, says C.Yogeswaran, the Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian. Punanai is a border village located along Batticaloa - Polonnaruwa road that runs through Sri Lanka Army garrisons situated between Punaanai and Welikande. Recent reports have also exposed Sinhalicisation taking place in Vadamunai, situated southswest of Punanai.

Earlier, Saiva devotees were unable to visit the temple and perform religious rites due to the location of an SLA camp of the occupying Sri Lanka Army in its close proximity. The temple is located close to Punaanai railway station.

After the camp was shifted from the area and located elsewhere, Saivites are now able to visit the temple to perform their religious rites. But, according to the villagers, the SL military is still regarding the area as a high security zone.

In the meantime, a Sinhala Buddhist monk, who has arrived recently to the area with the backing of Colomb-based Buddhist organisations and the SL military, is occupying a land close to the Saiva temple.

At this juncture, the disappearance of Pi'l'laiyaar statue from the temple has created suspicion among the Tamil Saiva community that the Buddhist monk is operating with a hidden motive of Sinhalicising the area, Mr. Yogeswaran told media.

Similar thefts have also been reported in Vaakarai DS division in the north of Batticaloa district.

The members of Saiva community and temple authorities have made complaints to the SL police about the theft of statues of Saiva deities from Paal-chenai Periyaswamy temple. Paal-cheanai, earlier controlled by the LTTE, was occupied by the SLA in 2007.

The Sinhalicisation, which was earlier blocked by the presence of the LTTE forces from Kudumpimalai in the South to Vaakarai in the north, is now taking place along Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa border.

Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vipulananda, Poet Periyathampi desecrated in Batticaloa city

2ND LEAD (UPDATE)

Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vipulananda, Poet Periyathampi desecrated in Batticaloa city

[TamilNet, Friday, 06 April 2012, 07:27 GMT]
Three key statues put up by Eezham Tamils in the heart of Batticaloa city have been desecrated and destroyed in the early hours of Friday. The head part of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, located near the clock tower in the high security area of the city centre, was among the destroyed statues, reports from Batticaloa said. The occupying Special Task Force commandos of the Sri Lankan police have been deployed at the site as tension prevailed in the city and the public market has been closed down. Two other statues subjected to attack are that of prominent Eezham Tamils from Batticaloa, Tamil Scholar and Hindu reformer Swami Vipulananda and Poet, Pulavarma'ni Periyathampi Pi'l'lai. The latest desecration of statues come following pressure exerted from Tamil Nadu on New Delhi demanding action against genocidal Colombo in the international fora.

Meanwhile, genocidal Sri Lanka has deployed its occupying Sinhala military in hurriedly building Buddhist Stupas throughout North and East, including key locations in the major cities, to give a 'new cultural identity' to the cities and landscape of the country of Eezham Tamils.

In November 2011, when TNA leader R. Sampanthan was on an international visit, the statue of Thanthai Chelva was decapitated in Trincomalee.

All the three statues destroyed in Batticaloa are located within the perimeters of the high security area manned by the SL Police and the SLA in the city.

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the heart of the Batticaloa city was put up in 1960s during the times of the Tamil parliamentarian C. Rajadurai.

The headquarters of the Sri Lankan police in Batticaloa is situated 200 meters east of the Gandhi statue and the residential quarters of the SL Police officials is located 150 meters close to the site.

The occupying SL military's headquarters in the district is also located close to the Gandhi statue.

SL policemen guard the residence of the president of Batticaloa municipality, which is situated close to the statue in the south.

Swami Vipulananda's statue is also located next to the prison guarded by the SL Police in the city. It is located in the Ramakrishna Mission school situated in front of the Aanaip-panthi temple.

The desecrated statue of Poet Pulavarma'ni Periyathampi-pi'l'lai is situated on Muthaliyaar Road in the city.

Swami Vipulananda, a renowned Tamil scholar was the first professor of Tamil in the University of Ceylon, Colombo, and in the Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu. He was born in Kaarai-theevu in the Ampaa'rai district of the Eastern province.

He joined the Ramakrishna Mission and played a vital role in the educational development of the Eezham Tamils by establishing several educational institutions in the Tamil homeland.

Pulavarma'ni Periyathampi Pi'l'lai, born in Ma'ndoor, Batticaloa, in the 19th century was a poet and a remarkable scholar in classical Tamil. He was a student of Chunnaakam Kumaraswamip Pulavar.

In January this year, the statue of Swami Vivekananda, well known Indian spiritual leader and Hindu reformist, located in front of a fuel station on Batticaloa–Kalmunai Road was destroyed by a motorbike squad.

SL Police releases statue desecration suspect following political influence

[TamilNet, Monday, 16 January 2012, 07:03 GMT]
A suspect arrested by the Sri Lankan police in connection with the desecration of Swami Vivekananda in Batticaloa was released on bail due to the intervention of MLAM Hisbullah, a deputy minister in the Mahinda Rajapaksa led government. The statue of 18th century Vedantic spiritual leader of Hinduism, situated in the border of Tamil dominated Aaraiyampathi and Muslim dominated Kaaththaankudi, was desecrated by a motorbike squad Tuesday last week. The SL Police arrested a man, an eyewitness, following the incident and released him. Later, Vahawan alias Vadi, a Muslim person who owns a hardware store in Kaaththaankudi, was arrested by the SL Police in Kaaththaankudi.

Due to the intervention of Mr. Hisbullah, the suspect was released by the police after two hours of his detention in the police station.   The suspect, alleged to have committed several crimes in the past in Batticaloa, has been evading arrest due to political influence, sources in Kaaththaankudi said.

Civil organizations have requested the authorities to initiate necessary steps to repair the damaged statue as the culprit for the crime had been identified.

The destruction is viewed as an attempt to create further divisions between Tamils and Muslims in the district.

Certain elements in the ruling UPFA were protesting against the use of Arabic in the East in the beginning of 2011.

Later, in September 2011, name boards in Tamil were destroyed by an unknown squad, who were believed to be operatives of the military establishment in Colombo.

The welcome board “Va'nakkam, Batticaloa welcomes you” in Tamil was removed and the Sri Lankan police was spreading a rumour that certain Muslim leaders, including the Batticaloa Urban Council chairman considered “Va'nakkam” in Tamil as harem at that time.

Politically motivated mischievous elements should not be allowed to create disharmony between Tamils and Muslims in the East, said Batticaloa District Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian P.Ariyanethran in a statement condemning the desecration of the state of a Hindu Swami Vivekananda in Aaraiyampathi - Kaaththaankudi border recently. “Those who want to pursue their political ambition currently in the scene are suspected to be behind such crimes and violence between communities,” the TNA MP said.

Statues of educationists and religious leaders in the east are under threat from mischievous elements.

People would rally against such criminal acts by political mischievous elements continue unabated, the MP warned in his statement.

The law enforcement authority in Troncomalee has not arrest those who desecrated Thanthai Chelva statue. The lapse on the SL law enforcement authority had raised a grave suspicion on the part of the Colombo government, TNA parliamentarian alleged in his statement.

A group of men who came in motorbikes Tuesday around 00:30 a.m. destroyed the statue of Swami Vivekananda, a well known Vedantic spiritual leader of Hinduism from the 18th century. The statue, located in front of a fuel filling station on Batticaloa Kalmunai Road (A4) and is regarded locally as a border mark of Tamil dominated Aaraiyampathi and Muslim dominated Kaaththaankudi in Batticaloa district. The destruction is viewed as an attempt to create further divisions between Tamils and Muslims in the district. The SL police is allegedly involved in activities creating dissension between Tamils and Muslims by engineering such attacks, informed sources in Kaaththaankudi told TamilNet Tuesday.

The hands, legs, face of the statue were badly damaged.

A watcher of the fuel filling station, who witnessed the motorbike squad, was taken into custody by the SL Police in Kaaththaankudi.

Certain elements in the ruling UPFA were protesting against the use of Arabic in the East in the beginning of 2011.

Mano Ganeshan condemns decapitation of Chelva’s statue

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 01 November 2011, 19:38 GMT]
Mano Ganeshan, leader of the Democratic People’s Front (DPF) has condemned the decapitation of the late Tamil leader Thanthai SJV Chelvanayakam as an act of barbarism by chauvinist elements. Mr. Mano Ganeshan has reminded the services of Thanthai Chelva by launching a non-violent struggle against the subjugation of Tamils not only in North and East but also in the Upcountry at a time when the Sri Lankan government disenfranchised the Upcountry Tamils.

Thanthai Chelva is still being revered as the father of Tamil community in the entire island.

The decapitation of Thanthai Chelva statue in Trincomalee should be considered as an act against the thinking of non-violent movement launched by the late leader, Mano Ganeshan further said.

The vandalism had taken place in the heart of Trincomalee city which is under the control of Sri Lanka government and its armed forces.

The decapitation of Thanthai Chelva statue should also be considered as an act of destroying all historical evidence of the history of Tamil community in their traditional land, he said.

The attack on Thanthai Chelva statue in Trincomalee has also stressed the need of taking forward the non-violent movement in achieving the legitimate demands and aspirations of the Tamil speaking people, Mr.Mano Ganeshan said in a press release.
