Resettled survivors of Vanni onslaught languish

Resettled survivors of Vanni onslaught languish in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Monday, 30 December 2013, 17:14 GMT]
95% of the 1080 families of Batticaloa Tamils who survived the 2009 genocidal onslaught in Vanni and resettled back in Batticaloa district have been completely neglected from any help and still languish without basic facilities. When the families displaced from Batticaloa to Vanni in 2004 from different places of the district, Karuna group paramilitary destroyed their houses and their possessions were robbed. When they returned to their district, surviving the genocidal onslaught, Europe-based NGOs and UN agencies provided temporary huts to these families. All support stopped there, and these huts became the ‘markers’ for these families to get isolated from further aid, the families complain. They have also been sidelined from the Indian housing assistance.

These families are systematically discriminated in the provision of humanitarian aid in the district through the influence exerted on the civil administration by the SL military operated paramilitary elements.

Of 4,000 houses to be constructed in the Eastern Province under the Indian housing plan, 2,000 units are allocated to the victims in Batticaloa district. The Vanni survivors are neglected also from the provision of housing scheme due to various interferences in the selection of beneficiaries, the affected families complain.

The families of Vanni survivors, who were originally displaced from Koa'ra'laip-pattu North (Vaakarai), Koa'ra'laip-pattu South (Kiraan), Vavu'natheevu, Koa'ra'laip-pattu, Paddip-pazhai, Poara-theevup-pattu and Ma'n-munaip-pattu were resettled into 10 DS divisions when they came back to the district surviving the genocidal onslaught, barbed-wire internment and SL military detention.

No Indian houses for uprooted Batticaloa Tamils from Vanni

[TamilNet, Saturday, 28 December 2013, 22:30 GMT]
Hundreds of Tamil residents, who were uprooted from Vanni in the 2009 genocidal onslaught and resettled in Batticaloa district now, have not been provided permanent houses under the Indian housing project, according to complaints made to the Batticaloa District Citizen Committee.

The resettled survivors of the genocidal onslaught are still sheltered in temporary huts in Batticaloa.

The affected people residing in Aaraip-pattai (Aaraiyampathi), Thaazhagkudaa and Kiraan-ku’lam attended the monthly meeting of the Batticaloa Citizen Committee last Sunday and brought their pathetic situation without permanent dwellings to the notice of the civil society.

SL military vehicle hits children in Batticaloa, 3 wounded

[TamilNet, Thursday, 29 August 2013, 03:39 GMT]
A speeding Sri Lankan military water bowser in Kiraan knocked down three children on Wednesday. 14-year-old Chinna Kannan, 12-year-old Janithan and 11-year-old Kousalyan were rushed to Chanthi-ve'li hospital and transferred to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for further treatment, medical sources in Batticaloa said.

The SL police in Ea'raavoor was quick to claim that a ‘preliminary investigation’ had revealed that the children were running across the road causing the ‘accident’.

Kiraan is located 28 km north of Batticaloa.

23 resettled Tamils slain in Batticaloa since 2009 by wild elephants

23 resettled Tamils slain in Batticaloa since 2009 by wild elephants

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 20 August 2013, 17:43 GMT]
At least 23 resettled Tamils have been killed in Batticaloa district by wild elephants that have been brought into the jungles close to Tamil villages by genocidal Colombo's Forest Department after 2009. Disregarding the repeated objections of the people, the SL Forest Department has brought in more wild elephants from Hambantota where Rajapaksa government recently launched ‘Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport’. The resettled people have been complaining to the SL Police and civil officials each time a person is slain by the wild elephants brought in from the South.

Three more wild elephants, brought in on 05th August, have gone amok on the huts and properties of the resettled Tamils at 5th Mile Post area, the villagers say.

Wild elephant attacks have been reported in Eaa'raavoor-pattu (Chengkaladi) and Koa'ralaip-pattu South divisions. Kudumpi-malai, 5th Mile Post, Eera'lak-ku'lam, Chiththaa'ndi, Chinna-ve'li and Chinnaa'lan-ve'li.

The wild elephants often visit the agricultural sites seeking water in ponds and tanks. The elephants also destroy paddy and stores where harvested rice and harvested crops are stored.

The resettled people depend on agriculture and freshwater fishing are severely affected by the wild elephants.

The resettled Tamils also complain that wild elephants are deployed to force them away from their villages.

The people of Paduvaankarai complain that the SL authorities have systematically failed to act on their complaints.

In the meantime, Colombo is transferring 12 Divisional Secretaries in the Batticaloa district next month.

Divisional Secretaries in Paduvaan-karai region of the Batticaloa district, who have only completed one-year service in their divisions, are also being subjected to the internal transfer scheme. Civil sources said the transfer scheme is planned to appoint Divisional Secretaries whom Colombo considers as “loyal” to its genocidal land appropriation policy.

SL minister punishes Batticaloa villagers

SL minister punishes Batticaloa villagers for supporting TNA

[TamilNet, Sunday, 11 August 2013, 22:38 GMT]
More than 1,830 acres of paddy crops lying on the left hand channel of Unnichchai tank are in the verge of dying without water supply. Spill gates of the tank have been closed from July 25 as SL Deputy Minister in Rajapaksa government Vinayagamoorthy Muralidharan has imposed a ‘ban’ on water supply to farmers on the left channel as ‘punishment’ for their support to the parliamentarians of Tamil National Alliance in the Eastern Province, civil sources in Batticaloa said.

The affected farmers blame the District Irrigation Engineer for penalizing them for seeking assistance from TNA parliamentarian P. Selvarasa.

Further, the District Irrigation Engineer was also used by the Colombo government which was allegedly responsible for an attack on Tamil farmers who were cultivating paddy at Kozhuvaa-madu in Vaakaneari Poththaanai area on July 28.

In that attack 22 Tamil farmers were injured. Following that episode, a group of farmers staged a protest demonstration against the District Irrigation Engineer, who is being used by the paramilitary leader Muraleetharan alias Karuna.

SL military bans devotional song

SL military bans devotional song at ancient Saiva temple in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Friday, 09 August 2013, 23:44 GMT]
The occupying Sri Lanka Army in the East has banned Saiva devotional songs authored by popular poet Puthuvai Ratnathurai, whose whereabouts are still not known after the occupying Sri Lankan military had him into custody during the final hours of the Vanni war in May 2009. The SL military personnel have warned the temple administration of the historic Siva temple Thaan-thoan'ri-eesvarar at Kokkaddichchoalai not to play the popular devotional song "Piddukku ma'n chumantha perumaanaar” on the temple loud-speakers or on at any occasion. Together with the popular song on Kokkaddich-choalai, TamilNet also releases a few other songs for the wider Tamil audience throughout the world.

https://soundcloud.com/tamilnet/thaanthaa-malaiyin

http://soundcloud.com/tamilnet

http://soundcloud.com/tamilnet

The song has been regularly relayed in the loudspeaker till the SL military recently instructed the temple administration not to play it any more.

The song, which is a poem of Ratnathurai that has been rendered into voice by prominent Eezham Tamil singer SG Shanthan, is purely a devotional.

The temple authorities have been recently instructed by the SL military not to play the devotional songs of the “LTTE era”.

Several devotional songs were written by Poet Puthuvai Ratnathurai under the title ‘Koapura vaasal’ praising the glory of Thaanthaamalai Murukan Koayil, Ukanthai Murukan Koayil, Ea'raavoor Kaa'li Koayil, Maamaangkap-pi'l'laiyaar Koayil, Kokkaddich-choalai, Chiththaa'ndi Murukan Koayil, Ma'ndoor Murukan Koayil and Thiruk-koa'neasvaram temple.

The ban and restrictions being placed on Saiva temples by the occupying Colombo and its military remind the people of Batticaloa of the colonial Portuguese and Dutch periods, Saiva devotees in Batticaloa say.

During the Portuguese and Dutch periods, Saiva Koyils were destroyed and the colonial masters banned routine poojas and rituals. Today, more than five hundred Saiva temples have been destroyed in the East giving way to the construction of new Buddhist Viharas. Some Buddhist monks have removed the Pi'l'laiyaar statue from the Pillaiyar Koyil located at Punaanai where Sri Lanka Army has a cantonment.

The occupying military, constructing Buddha temples, is also allegedly behind the robberies in the temples after the Saiva devotees protested against the hostile act by the SL military in grabbing the lands belonging to Saiva temples in the East.

The Saiva devotees protesting against the ‘robberies’ taking place at Saiva temples have been threatened by the SL military.

If the Saiva devotees attend the protests organised by Tamil parliamentarians from Batticaloa, they would face the same fate of the Sinhala residents of Welweriya in the Gampaha district where a student was shot dead by the SL military when the protestors ignored the ‘instructions’ of the ‘security forces’, the Sinhala military has warned the villagers in Batticaloa.

The genocidal realities in the island have to get into the conscience of the people in India misled by the BJP-RSS-Shiv Sena lot and by the Indian media empires operated from Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai, said representatives of Saiva associations in the East.

Colombo transfers Tamil officers for opposing demographic changes in Batticaloa

Colombo transfers Tamil officers for opposing demographic changes in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Thursday, 08 August 2013, 23:54 GMT]
While the SL Government Agent of Batticaloa, Ms PSM Charles is on vacation, Mr Neel De Alwis, the SL Government Agent of Ampaa’rai, has been appointed as Additional Government Agent to look after the affairs of the Batticaloa district, news sources in Batticaloa said. The SLGA of Ampaa’rai has been behind the recent encroachments by Sinhalese in the villages of Paddippazhai bordering Ampaa’rai, the sources further said adding that the Buddhist prelate of Batticaloa had been waging a campaign for the last two years demanding appointment of Sinhala officials at the key posts in the administration of the Batticaloa district.

In the meantime, Mr V. Vasudevan, the Assistant District Secretary of Batticaloa, who is a Tamil, has been transferred to Aaraip-pattai (stylised into Aaraiyampathi) Divisional Secretariat.

The Divisional Secretary of Aaraip-pattai Ms Vasuki has been appointed as Deputy Postmaster General (Eastern Province).

Vasuki’s transfer to postal services comes as she had voiced against demographic changes in her division, informed civil sources say.

Mr Neel De Alwis has been spearheading Sinhalicisation of Kevu’lyaa-madu, Suvaami-malai and Magncha’l-aa’ru villages bordering Ampaa’rai district.

Colombo schemes new ways for Sinhalicisation

Colombo schemes new ways to appropriate more lands for Sinhalicisation in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 07 August 2013, 22:50 GMT]
Thousands of acres of land in the Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province are likely to be appropriated under the Land Reform Laws of the occupying Sri Lankan State, according to informed civil sources in Batticaloa. The Colombo government is to appropriate lands that have been legally possessed by Tamils for the last fifty years under the one-acre permit scheme. Colombo and its Eastern Provincial Council are to formulate necessary legislation to appropriate lands above one-acre in 14 DS divisions in the Batticaloa district. More than one hundred acres of lands are to be appropriated under the Land Reform Laws of the Sinhala government.

Majority of residents possess one-acre permit only.

Apart from that, permits for lands had not been issued to majority of residents during the times of war in Poara-theevup-pattu, Paddip-pazhai, Vavu’natheevu, Koa’ra’laip-pattu South (Kiraan), Ea’raavoorpattu (Chengkaladi), Koa’ra’laip-pattu North (Vaakarai) divisions.

These lands are going to be appropriated for Sinhalicisation, civil sources said.

There was no evidence to show Sinhalese were living in Paduvaankarai area. But after the end of war in the eastern province in 2007, nearly thousand acres of lands belonging to Tamils in the area had been appropriated by the Sinhalese encroachers with the backing of the occupying Sri Lanka Army.

Those affected by the Land Reform Laws had placed their grievances before a workshop held in July in Batticaloa under the aegis of the National Peace Council.

The ‘objective’ of the workshop was to brief the ‘recommendations’ by the so-called Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

Prominent persons from all three communities, representatives of resettled persons and university lecturers had been invited to the NPC workshop.

When the affected people placed their grievances at the workshop, Batticaloa Mangalarama Viharathipathi Ambitiya Sumana Ratna Thera, who was present there, intervened. The organizers allowed him to speak and the Buddhist monk started shouting that lands were being given to Tamils and Muslims and not to Sinhalese.

The Buddhist monk also said that the workshop was being held with ‘wrong agenda’. Tension prevailed in the workshop following Thera’s speech. He later complained that he had been attacked when the organizers of workshop had asked him to stop his speech.

Occupying Sri Lanka Army threatens Tamil protesters in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Monday, 05 August 2013, 12:13 GMT]
The occupying Sri Lanka Army on Sunday threatened the Tamil residents of Maangkaadu and Kurukka'l-madam from participating in the protest march organized by the Tamil National Alliance against desecration of Saiva koayils. Troops of the occupying Sri Lanka Army visited every household and threatened the inmates not participate in protest march.

If the villagers attended the protest, they would face the same fate as that of the Sinhala residents of Welweriya in the Gampaha district where a student was shot dead by the SL military when the protestors ignored the ‘instructions’ of the ‘security forces’, the Sinhala military has warned the villagers in Batticaloa, residents said.

“The intimidation and threat carried out by the army against protestors made us to think that desecration of Saiva temples in Tamil villages in the Eastern province had been carried out by the Sri Lankan army and police“, TNA politician Mr. Selvarasa responded while addressing the participants of the protest.   He added that the TNA had held the protest march not against the police and the army but against the persons who carried out the desecration.

Batticaloa inscription refers to visit of founder of Sikh religion

Batticaloa inscription refers to visit of founder of Sikh religion

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 31 July 2013, 15:50 GMT]
A Tamil-Sanskrit-Gurmukhi inscription, dateable to 1511 CE, excavated in the Batticaloa (Maddak-ka’lappu) district of the country of Eezham Tamils, refers to the visit of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion, to the island. The inscription refers to a conversation between the Guru and Vikramabahu VI, a king in the island at that time, The Times of India reported on Wednesday, citing Ashok Kumar Kainth, a Punjabi historian working in the island since 2004. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) will send a delegation to the island to study the inscription and site, the historian was further cited.

Apart from Tamil and Sanskrit, the third script Gurmukhi found in the inscription was a mixture of Sharda and Takri scripts of North India at that time, Kainth said.

The inscription is in 28 pieces and two more pieces are yet to be excavated, Kainth further said.

Guru Nanak, according to historical texts of his time, had made four long journeys called Chaar Udasiaan and his visit to the island is mentioned in the texts, the news report said.

Kainth said that the visit took place in 1511 CE.

Kainth is part of a 22-member international team working on the geographical locations mentioned in Ramayana and he has correlated several incidents mentioned in the epic with locations in the island, Times of India said.

An inscription is objective evidence, which could be verified for the authenticity of the information. But hitherto the ‘Ramayana’ sites in the island prove to be only myths, either old or new, and they are used in attracting gullible tourists, an academic in Jaffna commented.

Exploiting the superstitious gullibility of such tourists in the name of ‘heritage tourism’ for politico-economic purposes is largely carried out in India and among the diaspora in Malaysia and Singapore, the academic in Jaffna further commented.

The Austro-Asiatic or Veddoid word Lanka simply means any island or islet, including a river islet. The Lanka of Ramayana epic originally meant an islet in Central India was the opinion of the renowned Indian archaeologist and prehistorian, the late Professor H.D. Sankalia.

Colombo accelerates Sinhala colonisation

Colombo accelerates Sinhala colonisation in Batticaloa: TNA MP

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 30 July 2013, 23:54 GMT]
The Colombo government is accelerating the Sinhala colonization in the Batticaloa district. More than one hundred Sinhalese families were brought down from Ampaa'rai district and have been settled down in Kevu'liya-madu village in Paddippazhai DS division, according to Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Mr. P. Selvarasa.

Kevu'liya-madu is a traditional Tamil village.

Tamil farmers were engaged in Cheanai-cultivation (rain fed) in the village since 1970.

They were uprooted from the village several times and lost their belongings when they fled from the village seeking safety elsewhere.

Now, only 21 Tamil families have resettled in the village due to their personal efforts though they were not provided with basic facilities by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Already, 227 Sinhala families are living in the village with voting rights.

The Tamil National Alliance vehemently opposes the move by the government to colonize the village with more Sinhalese from other parts of the island.

Attempts made by the Paddippazhai DS division in taking legal action were proved futile.

The Sinhala settlers ordered by the court to vacate their lands in the village are being provided with houses constructed with bricks.

The Sinhala families living in the village for years also blame that the latest illegal settlement of Sinhalese as disturbing the prevailing ethnic harmony in the village, Mr Selvarasa, who recently visited the village told media.

Batticaloa Mangalarama Viharathipathi Ambitiya Suma Ratna Thera was giving support to the illegal Sinhala settlers.

Colombo government should take immediate steps to evict those Sinhalese families who have encroached lands in the village. The uprooted Tamils and Sinhalese who have been living in the village legally since 1970 should be provided with basic facilities, the TNA parliamentarian said.

Buddha statue forcibly placed in school

Buddha statue forcibly placed in playground of Muslim school in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 July 2013, 21:17 GMT]
Muslims of Oaddamaavadi village in Batticaloa were shocked on Monday early morning this week when they saw a Buddha statue placed on a table in the middle of the playground of Pi'rainthu'raich-chenai Ashar Viththiyaalayam in Vaazhaich-cheanai. Oaddamavadi is a Muslim dominated town, located 32 km north of Batticaloa city. The playground is located close to Buddha Jayanthi Vihara in Vaazhaich-cheanai. The head of the Buddhist vihara had attempted to seize the playground from the school in 2010.

The School Development Society (SDS) of the Ashar school immediately lodged a complaint with the Vaazhaich-cheanai police stating that the statue had been placed in the middle of the playground of the school as act of provocation against the Muslims.

Pi'rainthu'raich-chenai Ashar Vidiyalayam is using the playground for the last thirty years holding sports meets and cultural activities, the SDS sources said.

Three years ago, on March 01, 2010, the head of the Buddha Jayanthi Vihara forcibly demolished the boundary wall between the playground and the vihara.

The head of the Buddhist vihara had also warned the school staff and students not to enter the land that he claimed as the property of the vihara. However, the SDS moved the matter to the District Court, which ruled that the said land belonged to the school as its playground.

Ban on water supply threatens agriculture of Eezham Tamils

Ban on water supply threatens agriculture of Eezham Tamils in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Friday, 28 June 2013, 22:34 GMT]
By banning water supply to agriculture and paper mills and supplying water to tourist houses, the Colombo government is putting lives of many Eezham Tamils in stake in Batticaloa. The Sri Lankan Finance Ministry, which comes directly under SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is also the finance minister in Colombo, has imposed on ban on supply of water from Vaakaneari lake to the agricultural farms, agriculturalists from the area complain.

The water irrigation centre has been advised to direct the waters from Vaakaneari lake to the tourist house jointly set up by Mahinda Rajapaksa's Finance Ministry and paramilitary operative Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan's Pillaiyan group at the Kalkudda – Paasik-kudaa area, which comes under Koa'ra'laip-pattu division in Batticaloa district.

Orders have been passed to stop the supply of water to paper plant functioning out of Vaazhaich-cheanai – Kaavaththa-munai area.

The Vaakaneari lake that comes under the administration of Vaazhaich-Cheanai Kendra centre was constructed in 1976 for small crops under the large irrigation project. Under the project, water is supplied to over 8,156 acres of paddy lands in 16 areas. Around 6,708 agricultural families are beneficiaries of the scheme.

The lake also supplies water to paper mill that employs over 700 people. Tamil civil officials say that the livelihood of over 7,500 families would be at stake if water supply is stopped at the mill.

Under LTTE’s administration after 1994, the water was supplied freely to all areas and to the paper mill without any hindrance.

However, after Colombo captured the East in 2007, thousands of acres of lands in Kalkudda and Paasik-kudaa areas have been confiscated by SL presidential siblings under the pretext of ‘coastal protection’ and the so-called development scheme known as ‘Kizhakkin uthayam’ (the rise of the East).

This programme has been conceived by the occupying Colombo according to ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ (Mahinda's vision) committing a structural genocide on Tamils. This ‘Chinthana’ functions much like the same way the LLRC deception is being taken forward in Geneva in providing necessary ‘time’ and ‘space’ for Colombo in committing the structural genocide on the nation of Eezham Tamils.

SL Finance ministry and its paramilitary Pillaiyan Group have come together under the scheme to set up tourist houses. The tourist houses employ hundreds of Sinhalese and their families are settled in the area.

Initially, the Colombo government has said that it would create employment opportunities for the youth of Batticaloa district by setting up tourist houses.

It is reported that at least 5,000 litres of water is being sent to the tourist houses every day.

Even as small crops cultivated during the dry zone are ready for harvest, apprehensions loom large about the crops being destroyed owing to lack of water supply.

Rajapaksa's Finance Ministry has said that the water required would be supplied under Mathuru-oya water irrigation programme.

It may be noted that a similar request to release water from Mathur-oya water irrigation, which is under Mahaweli water irrigation scheme, for crops in Vadamunai and Kallichchai areas was summarily rejected by Colombo.

By setting up tourist houses at Kalkudda and Paasik-kudaa areas, the SL government in Colombo seems bent on seizing the resources of the district.

In the meantime, anti-social activities have also increased in these areas, Tamils complain.

Participating in a meeting recently, even the SL Government Agent of the district, Mrs B S Charles has gone on record saying that anti social activities were on the rise in the district.

Girl student sexually assaulted in Batticaloa near SLA, STF camps

Girl student sexually assaulted in Batticaloa near SLA, STF camps

[TamilNet, Monday, 24 June 2013, 01:36 GMT]
Tamil women from the East continue to be vulnerable to sexual assaults allegedly at the hands of Sinhala men even as another incident of sexual assault on a 17-year-old student was reported in Batticaloa district on Thursday last week.

A girl student from Veappaveddavaan village was rescued from a bush in a sexually abused state on Thursday.

The girl was sexually assaulted in Chengkaladi - Badulla A5 Highway that comes under Karadiyanaa’ru police limits within the division of Ea'raavoor-pattu (Chengkaladi) of the Batticaola district.

The girl is studying arts at GCE (A/L) level at Thannaamunai Va'lanaar School.

On June 20, she had reportedly left for the educational institution and was on her way to home when the abuse took place at Theakkangcheanai after the girl had got down from a bus.

It is reported the miscreants who committed the shameful act remain ‘unidentified’.

A Sri Lanka Special Task Force (STF) camp is situated at Iluppaiyadich-cheanai where the girl had got down from the bus. A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp is situated close to the site at Maavadi-oadai.

It may be recalled that a 45-year-old woman was abused last May by four Sinhalese men in the Batticaloa district.

In the meantime, SL military intelligence officers of the occupying Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the north of Vaakarai are reportedly frequenting the houses of former LTTE members and combatants under the pretext of investigations and are attempting to sexually harass the wives while keeping their husbands in prolonged detention.

India’s housing in un-freed land facilitates Sinhalicisation

India’s housing in un-freed land facilitates Sinhalicisation

[TamilNet, Friday, 21 June 2013, 09:32 GMT]
Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Mr P Selvarasa has warned that the occupying Colombo government has planned to grab several houses allocated under the Indian aid for war-affected Tamil families in the Eastern Province especially in Batticaloa district to be handed over to Sinhalese who are being brought down to the Batticaloa district from the South. The ultimate culprit that makes the housing meaningless is the Indian policy of not recognising or freeing the land of Eezham Tamils for them. If the policy is tacit support to demographic genocide, the result will be a Palestinian crisis for Eezham Tamils in the island. What has to be primarily addressed is the policy of New Delhi, commented activists of alternative politics in the East.

The TNA parliamentarian Selvarasa, briefing the media this week, said that the TNA would not allow such illegal handing over of houses under the Indian-aid to Sinhalese encroachers.

“We will not allow the Indian house aid scheme to be used for housing the newly settled Sinhalese families in the district. We have brought this situation to the notice of the district Government Agent”, Mr Selvarasa said.

Under the 50-thousand Indian housing scheme for the war-affected families, four thousand houses are allocated for the Eastern Province.

Two thousand houses would be constructed in Batticaloa district, one thousand houses in Trincomalee district and the balance 1000 houses in the Ampaa'rai district.

Now, the Colombo authorities are diverting a section of these houses to colonisers from the South.

India building houses without recognising the right of Eezham Tamils to their land and home, and without recognising the sovereignty of their nation, would be meaningless like what is now happening in the East. It would only lead to Palestinisation and perpetual crisis, commented activists of alternative politics in the East.

The TNA, rather than telling that they would not allow Indian houses going to Sinhalese, should be able to tell India itself to its face to first change its policies towards the nation of Eezham Tamils and make their land free, so that they could live in their houses in peace, the activists further said.

Sinhala military wants ‘Kappan’ from Batticaloa Tamil farmers

Sinhala military wants ‘Kappan’ from Batticaloa Tamil farmers

Aiming at totally bankrupting the Tamil farmers of Koa'raippattu South (Kiraan) division in Batticaloa district, the occupying Sri Lankan military, which schemes Sinhalicisaton and colonisation of the pasturelands in the division, now demand 3,000 rupees per 10 cattle from the Tamil farmers. The ‘Kappan’ military of Sri Lanka has instructed the Tamil farm-owners to pay the money before 25th of this month. The extortion is taking place in the name of providing ‘housing’ to disabled Sinhala soldiers, the farmers from Alli-oadai village told TamilNet on Friday.

Earlier, Tamil paramilitary personnel operated by the SL military were demanding money.

But this time, the extortion has reached a larger proportion.

The SL military now wants the Tamil farmers to give up grazing their cattle and farming in the area, the Tamil farmers complain.

The officers of the occupying Sinhala military have earlier registered the number of cattle owned by the Tamil farmers in the division. They are now using these figures to demand large sums of money from the Tamil farmers.

Already, more than 500 Sinhalese brought from the South have encroached into the pasturelands and the Sinhala ‘Civil Defence Force’ paramilitary operated by Colombo has been killing and stealing the cattle of Tamil farmers.

The Tamil name of the village Alli-oadai (lotus pond) has also been changed to ‘Aliayaa-oadai’ in Sinhala by the occupying military.

Two months ago, the Sri Lanka Army soldiers at the nearby Koaddaik-kallaa'ru were harassing the Tamil villagers for money, showing a letter in English and Sinhala that they were constructing houses for disabled Sri Lankan soldiers.

Kappan in Sinhala, related to Kappam in Tamil and meaning taxes or tribute, is widely used today as a word for extortion of money.

Ampaa'rai officials overstep into Batticaloa district to Sinhalicise Tamil village

[TamilNet, Friday, 07 June 2013, 18:31 GMT]
Sinhala authorities from Ampaa'rai district in the East have laid a brand new carpet road to the ancient Tamil village, Chuvaami-malai that comes under the jurisdiction of the Batticaloa district administration. The name of the village has been changed to Booja-boomi. New cottages are being built using beaten earth by Sinhala settlers with funds provided by the Sinhala Buddhist extremist outfit Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Power Force), Tamil civil officials from Paddippazhai division of Batticaloa district told TamilNet Friday. At least 100 acres of lands have been appropriated at Chuvaami-malai for Sinhala colonists, the sources further said.

The extremist BBS has promised 100,000 rupees to each Sinhala family occupying the lands, the sources further said adding that around 100 new Sinhala families are to be settled in Kevu'liyaa-madu.

According to informed sources, the Sinhala officials have appropriated an extent of 120 acres of land from 40 Tamil families. These lands are being provided to Sinhala families settling in Kevu'liya-madu and Chuvaami-malai villages, which come under Paddippazhai DS division.

In the year 1956, when the Gal Oya Development scheme was underway, 305 Tamil families were allowed to settle along the Batticaloa – Amppa'rai border villages.

They were settled in the surroundings of the Navagiriya, Pulukunava, Thevalana ponds, which received water from the Gal Oya Development scheme.

However the SL authorities neglected Tamils in providing basic infrastructure facilities. Tamil schools were not established. As such the Tamil settlers could not continue to live in those lands. Nevertheless, they continued to engage in paddy cultivation.

During the SL State sponsored anti-Tamil pogroms in the years 1983, 1985 and 1990, and during the war in 2007, several dwelling units of these families and public buildings were destroyed.

Today, only 21 Tamil families live there without the basic amenities. They are unable to re-start cultivation in these areas.

Several complaints have been lodged at the Divisional Secretary office, Office of the SL Government Agent and the SL Human Rights Commission in this regard.

Even lawsuits were filed in the courts but lands that belonged to them were not restored so far, Tamil farmers lament.

After the end of war in the East in 2007, nine Sinhala families had settled in the lands. However, as lawsuits were filed against illegal appropriation of lands, 7 of them chose to leave.

There were only around 30 Sinhala families in 1956.

Today, even these Sinhala families complain that the activities of the newcomers from Pononnaruwa, Badulla and Moneragala affect the livelihood of the permanent inhabitants of the area.

Unidentified squads that came in heavy vehicles to three Saiva temples in Ka’luvaagnchik-kudi in Batticaloa district on Saturday midnight forcibly entered the temples and robbed the temples, stealing historic bronze statues, golden plates, jewellery and cash. Civil sources in the district suspect that the attack on temples, following the recent protest against the move by Buddhist extremists to install a Budda statue at the entrance to the Batticaloa city, has been carried out by the SL military intelligence, which has threatened the protestors during their protest on Wednesday.

Kurukka'l-madam Chellak-kathirkaamam Koayil, Kurukka'lmadam Aianaar Koayil and Maang-kaadu Pi'l'laiyaar Koayil in Ka'luvaagnchik-kudi of Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province were forcibly opened and burgled by the squads that came in heavy vehicles Saturday midnight.

Valuable historic bronze statues, golden plates and jewelry and several thousand rupees in cash were stolen away by the squads, according to complaints lodged with the SL Police in Ka'luvaagnchik-kudi.

Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians Messrs P.Selvarasa, C.Yogeswaran and P. Ariyanethran have visited the three temples and witnessed the extent of the damage caused to these temples.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians, Tamil councilors of the Eastern Province and the members of the Saiva community on Wednesday staged a protest against the erection of statue of Lord Buddha at the entrance to the Batticaloa city.

SL military intelligence personnel were confronting the protestors taking close-up photos of the participants of the peaceful protest in a threatening manner.

As a result, a tense situation prevailed for a while. Prompted by the harassment by the SL military intelligence, TNA parliamentarian Mr S. Yogeswaran, in turn said he has taken photographs of the intelligence personnel harassing the public and said that he would hold them responsible if any untoward incident befell the peaceful participants.

In the meantime, an injunction order prohibiting the construction of the Buddha statue has been issued by the Batticaloa Magistrate.

However, the chief Buddhist monk at the Mangalarama Buddhist temple in Batticaloa has vowed to appeal the decision of the magistrate court and to resume the construction of the controversial statue at the same site.

The threatening act of Sri Lankan military intelligence operatives, who took close-up photographs of the Tamil protestors against the construction of Buddha statue at the entrance to Batticaloa city on Wednesday, has exposed the nexus between the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry and the Sinhala Buddhist extremists, alternative political activists in Batticaloa said. The harassment by the SL military intelligence has also provoked Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Mr S. Yogeswaran to react saying that if any untoward incident befalls the peaceful demonstrators, it would be considered as the work of the Sri Lankan intelligence operatives who were involved in the act of public harassment on peaceful demonstrators. In the meantime, Batticaloa Magistrate NMM Abdulla has issued an injunction order prohibiting the construction of the Buddha statue, legal sources in Batticaloa said.

The SL Police in its report to the court had admitted that the construction of the statue at the site would cause public controversies, the legal sources further said.

However, news sources in the city said that the chief Buddhist monk at the Mangalarama Buddhist temple in Batticaloa has vowed to appeal the decision of the magistrate court and resume the construction of the statue at the same spot.

The Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian of Batticaloa Mr. S.Yogeswaran has condemned the act of the Intelligence personnel for taking photographs of the participants of the demonstration.

Mr. Yogeswaran said that he, as a member of parliament, took photographs of those intelligence operatives who were involved in the hostile act against the peaceful protestors.

A tense situation emerged at the scene for a while during the protest on Wednesday when the demonstrators were rounded up by the SL military intelligence.
