Australia funds biometric passports of genocidal Sri Lanka
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 12 August 2015, 22:33 GMT]
At a time, when the demand of Tamils is to internationally investigate the genocide and on-going genocide in the island, the response coming from Australia is funding genocidal Sri Lanka’s passport intimidation project, which will be targeting especially the Tamil diaspora. With the provision of 500 million rupees coming from Australia, Colombo this week begins the programme of taking fingerprints for the issue of biometric passports. Under the programme, everyone needing a new passport has to personally go to offices located only in the island for taking biometric data. New passports obtained through diplomatic missions outside may become invalid on landing in Colombo.
People living abroad should visit Colombo’s Immigration and Emigration department head office or a regional office in the island as soon as they return to the island to submit fingerprints.
The diaspora holding ‘Sri Lankan’ passports will either be discouraged to go to the island or will be encouraged to seek citizenships outside.
Therefore, the Australian priority to support Colombo’s passport project has little to do with its own refugee policy, or to migrant issues faced by other countries in the West.
It doesn’t have much to do with upgrading ‘Sri Lankan’ passport as ‘internationally recognized’ travel document either. At present only a very few countries in the world allow this passport holders to travel visa free.
Only a political solution to the national question in the island could make passport or passports issued from the island to get real international recognition.
The Australian show is naked competition in the genocide route to geopolitical benefits.
In the US-led coalition that directed the genocidal war in the island, Australia has become the most vocal partner in post-2009 times in defending the genocidal State in the island.
Australia’s foreign policy of strengthening the genocidal Sinhala State and its agenda of refusing justice to Tamils has to be carefully perused in southern South Asia, especially in Tamil Nadu, against the larger backdrop of Australia – Colombo – South Africa axis in the Indian Ocean.
