For the residents of Chedian, a few thousand-year-old village of muddy by-lanes and old stone courtyard houses, she is just another form of Guanyin, the female Bodhisattva who is venerated in many parts of China.

But the goddess that the residents of this village pray to every morning, as they light incense sticks and chant prayers, is quite unlike any deity one might find elsewhere in China. Sitting cross-legged, the four-armed goddess smiles benignly, flanked by two attendants, with an apparently vanquished demon lying at her feet.
Local scholars are still unsure about her identity, but what they do know is that this shrine’s unique roots lie not in China, but in far away south India. The deity, they say, was either brought to Quanzhou — a thriving port city that was at the centre of the region’s maritime commerce a few centuries ago — by Tamil traders who worked here some 800 years ago, or perhaps more likely, crafted by local sculptors at their behest.
“This is possibly the only temple in China where we are still praying to a Hindu God,” says Li San Long, a Chedian resident, with a smile.
“Even though most of the villagers still think she is Guanyin!” Mr. Li said the village temple collapsed some 500 years ago, but villagers dug through the rubble, saved the deity and rebuilt the temple, believing that the goddess brought them good fortune — a belief that some, at least, still adhere to.
The Chedian shrine is just one of what historians believe may have been a network of more than a dozen Hindu temples or shrines, including two grand big temples, built in Quanzhou and surrounding villages by a community of Tamil traders who lived here during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties.
At the time, this port city was among the busiest in the world and was a thriving centre of regional maritime commerce.
The history of Quanzhou’s temples and Tamil links was largely forgotten until the 1930s, when dozens of stones showing perfectly rendered images of the god Narasimha — the man-lion avatar of Vishnu — were unearthed by a Quanzhou archaeologist called Wu Wenliang. Elephant statues and images narrating mythological stories related to Vishnu and Shiva were also found, bearing a style and pattern that was almost identical to what was evident in the temples of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh from a similar period.
Wu’s discoveries received little attention at the time as his country was slowly emerging from the turmoil of the Japanese occupation, the Second World War and the civil war. It took more than a decade after the Communists came to power in 1949 for the stones and statues to even be placed in a museum, known today as the Quanzhou Maritime Museum.
“It is difficult to say how many temples there were, and how many were destroyed or fell to ruin,” the museum’s vice curator Wang Liming told The Hindu. “But we have found them spread across so many different sites that we are very possibly talking about many temples that were built across Quanzhou.”
Today, most of the sculptures and statues are on display in the museum, which also showcases a map that leaves little doubt about the remarkable spread of the discoveries. The sites stretch across more than a dozen locations located all over the city and in the surrounding county. The most recent discoveries were made in the 1980s, and it is possible, says Ms. Wang, that there are old sites yet to be discovered.
The Maritime Museum has now opened a special exhibit showcasing Quanzhou’s south Indian links. Ms. Wang says there is a renewed interest — and financial backing — from the local government to do more to showcase what she describes as the city’s “1000-year-old history with south India,” which has been largely forgotten, not only in China but also in India.
“There is still a lot we don't know about this period,” she says, “so if we can get any help from Indian scholars, we would really welcome it as this is something we need to study together. Most of the stones come from the 13th century Yuan Dynasty, which developed close trade links with the kingdoms of southern India. We believe that the designs were brought by the traders, but the work was probably done by Chinese workers.”
Ms. Wang says the earliest record of an Indian residing in Quanzhou dates back to the 6th century. An inscription found on the Yanfu temple from the Song Dynasty describes how the monk Gunaratna, known in China as Liang Putong, translated sutras from Sanskrit. Trade particularly flourished in the 13th century Yuan Dynasty. In 1271, a visiting Italian merchant recorded that the Indian traders “were recognised easily.”
“These rich Indian men and women mainly live on vegetables, milk and rice,” he wrote, unlike the Chinese “who eat meat and fish.” The most striking legacy of this period of history is still on public display in a hidden corner of the 7th century Kaiyuan Buddhist Temple, which is today Quanzhou’s biggest temple and is located in the centre of the old town. A popular attraction for Chinese Buddhists, the temple receives a few thousand visitors every day. In a corner behind the temple, there are at least half a dozen pillars displaying an extraordinary variety of inscriptions from Hindu mythology. A panel of inscriptions depicting the god Narasimha also adorns the steps leading up to the main shrine, which houses a Buddha statue. Huang Yishan, a temple caretaker whose family has, for generations, owned the land on which the temple was built, says the inscriptions are perhaps the most unique part of the temple, although he laments that most of his compatriots are unaware of this chapter of history. On a recent afternoon, as a stream of visitors walked up the steps to offer incense sticks as they prayed to Buddha, none spared a glance at the panel of inscriptions. Other indicators from Quanzhou’s rich but forgotten past lie scattered through what is now a modern and bustling industrial city, albeit a town that today lies in the shadow of the provincial capital Xiamen and the more prosperous port city of Guangzhou to the far south.
A few kilometres from the Kaiyuan temple stands a striking several metre-high Shiva lingam in the centre of the popular Bamboo Stone Park. To the city’s residents, however, the lingam is merely known as a rather unusually shaped “bamboo stone,” another symbol of history that still stays hidden in plain sight.

Genocide of Tamils one of the worst mass killings in history: MPP Glen Murray

Genocide of Tamils one of the worst mass killings in history: MPP Glen Murray

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 May 2013, 23:52 GMT]
“The 40 000 plus killed in the Tamil genocide is one of the worst mass killings sanctioned by a state in history, ” stated Glen Murray, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Toronto Centre while hosting the third annual Tamil Memorial Tree Planting event on Saturday at Evergreen Brick Works, a community environmental centre. The Evergreen Brick Works houses the first memorial dedicated to the victims of the Tamil genocide and was erected in 2011 by Mr.Murray. The memorial remembers the events from Black July to Mu'l'livaikkaal and all trees are planted to create a memorial forest to honour the Tamil lives lost in the pursuit of justice and freedom, the organizers said. On the same day in a symbolic move Frank Scarpitti, the Mayor to Markham city unveiled a new street named after the Vanni, the region of the Tamil homeland which endured the brunt of the genocidal atrocities in 2009.

“This project started when we talked about what brought us to Canada. In the case of Tamils it was escaping oppression, marginalization and genocide. The 40 000 plus killed in the Tamil genocide is one of the worst mass killings sanctioned by a state in history”, stated Glen Murray while recapping on why the event is held annually.

Mr.Murray drew comparisons to other communities who had suffered similarly to emphasize the importance of not only remembering but also continuing to fight.

He went on to further say, “The reason and goal of planting tens of thousands of trees is to remember all those lives lost, and this future forest can be a symbolic representation of those people. As we lay down new roots, we hope this will continue to be a living memorial, so we don’t forget. It is how we resolve that the Sri Lankan government did not win.”

Addressing the crowd of participants, Krisna Saravanamuttu from the National Council of Canadian Tamils affirmed that, “In the years to come we will make this park into a living testament to our commitment to freedom, justice, dignity and the rights of nations to self-determination."

He further stated that, "We come here every year to not just remember the dead but to reaffirm our roots in the struggle. We come here to strengthen our collective commitment to fighting for Tamil justice and freedom. From South Africa, to Northern Ireland, to Algeria, the common denominator for peace and justice was an ever-evolving resistance and building international solidarity. The root causes that led to the war have intensified through a protracted genocide manifested through occupation, colonization and ethnic cleansing. When the so called international community refuses to address the root cause of the ongoing genocide our only course of action in the coming year is grassroots struggle."

In concluding the event Mr.Murray encouraged everyone to join him in attending the annual large-scale mobilization by the Tamil community to remember the Tamil genocide on May 18th.

Earlier in the day Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Councillor Logan Kanapathi along with other members of Markham City Council hosted the official unveiling of ‘Vanni Street’ to the public.

This move is seen by the Tamil community to carry symbolic significance as the region of the Vanni suffered the brunt of the genocidal atrocities being committed on the Tamil nation.

Thanking Councillor Kanapathi and Markham city, Neethan Shan, Eezham Tamil activist and President of the Ontario New Democratic Party- commented that, “It serves as a beautiful symbol that recognizes the economic, political, social and cultural development of Tamils in Canada. In addition, it is definitely a symbol of our resistance, as it counteracts the attempts by the Sri Lankan state to erase the history of the Tamils through a concerted cultural genocide.

“Along with all the other reasons, I strongly feel that Vanni Street will function as a symbol for remembering all the victims of the genocide as well as the many tens of thousands of Tamils who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom,” he added.

Sinhala Buddha-Sasana custodians not recognizing nuns accuse Cholas

Sinhala Buddha-Sasana custodians not recognizing nuns accuse Cholas

[TamilNet, Thursday, 07 March 2013, 00:20 GMT]
With the fall of Anuradhapura to the “Chola invaders” in AD 1017, the Bikkhuni order (the Order of Buddhist Nuns) disappeared and became non-operational. Even though the Bikkhu Order of the males in the island was revived later with the help of the Theravada Buddhist monks of Burma, the Bikkhuni order could not be revived according to Theravada traditions, because the Theravada countries like Burma, Siam, Cambodia and Laos didn’t have nuns. Hence, recognising those who now claim as Bikkhunis in the island is not very satisfactory, commented, Registrar of the Asgiriya Chapter and academic of the Bikkhu University in Anuradhapura, Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassa Thero as cited by the latest edition of the Sunday Leader. [Anamaduwe is recent Sinhalicisation of a Tamil village Aanai-madu in NW province, meaning the pond of elephants]

The target of the Sinhala-Buddhist Chapters in the island is the Order of the Nuns that got ordained at Banaras in India in 1996, by Mahayana preceptors.

According to the Theravada preceptors (Mahanayaka Theras) in the island, women are to be ordained by both the Bhikkhuni Sangha and the Bihhku Sangha. There is no existing Bhikkhuni Sangha in the island, and in addition, the Mahanayaka Theras in the island were not consulted prior to the ordination in India, the Anamaduwe Thero told Sunday Leader.

Whether the Bikkhunis are ordained in India or in the island, the Buddha-Sasana Ministry of the Sinhala-Buddhist State in the island doesn’t recognize them as Bikkhunis to provide them with ID cards necessary to get State benefits, because the prelates of all the four Buddhist Chapters in the island, Malwatta, Asgiri, Amarapura and Ramanaya have opposed to the recognition of the Order of the Bikkhunis.

The Bikkhunis are currently considered only as Sil Matas (the mothers initiated into religious observations) and they don’t get educational and other State facilities meant for the Bikkhus. Thus nearly 427 Bikkhuni monasteries and thousands of Bihkkhunis are not registered with the Buddha Sasana Ministry of Colombo.

According to Ven. Ina-maluwe Sri Sumangala Thera, Mahanayaka of the Rangiri Dambulu Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya, Colombo’s Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs bears “Brahmin mentality” in penalising Bikkhunis.

A Bikkhuni brought the Sacred Bo-tree to the island; a woman brought the tooth-relic, but females are neither allowed to the upper terrace (Uda-Maluwa) of the Sacred Bo-Tree complex at Anuradhapura nor to the chamber where the Tooth Relic is housed in Kandy, the Ina-Maluwe Thera said.

Buddha himself has said to his disciple Ananda that the doctrine he preached would act as the teacher. Hence, the Buddha Sasana has not been handed over to anyone. It is not necessary to get the permission of any one to follow the doctrines of Buddha. The Order of the Bikkhinis is part of the doctrines of Buddha. If anyone opposes the existence of Bikkhunis, it is violation of the doctrines of Buddha and of Buddha, the Inamaluwe Thera said.

The guardianship of the Buddha-Sasana in the island, by the State in Colombo and by the Mahanayakas of the Chapters, has gone irredeemably null and void with their undertaking of the genocidal war and of the on-going genocide in the island, commented spiritual circles in the island that have transcended institutionalised religions.

Whether history is different to Tamils and Sinhalese, asks Jaffna academic

2ND LEAD (ADDS FEEDBACK)

Whether history is different to Tamils and Sinhalese, asks Jaffna academic

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 30 November 2011, 06:38 GMT]
A single event that took place in the University of Jaffna on the Heroes Day, Sunday, has captivated the minds of Tamils all over the world, more than the diaspora functions marked by ever increasing participation of people but in some instances showing hijack aimed at dividing, capturing and ‘softening’ the struggle by the very forces against whom the spirit of the Day was meant for. Amidst all the oppression against the Day, by genocidal Sri Lanka backed by imperialism especially the Indian one, unidentified people lit the Heroes Day flame atop a tall building in the Jaffna University to shine like a star of hope. The Sinhala brethren should understand the event in the same vein of they take pride in Sri Sumangala hoisting the lion flag in Dalada Maligawa even after the British conquest of Kandy, an academic in Jaffna said.

Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thera, the Anunayaka (deputy chief) of the Asgiriya Chapter of Buddhist monks, removed the Union Jack hoisted by a British soldier at the Paththirippuwa (the octagonal pavilion) of the Dalada Maligawa in 1815 and re-raised the lion flag of the Kandyan state, even though there was a military conquest and the king was captured.

The Kandyan Convention between the British and the chieftains of Kandy was being discussed at the time, and Sri Sumangala insisted to the military conquerors that unless the convention was signed deciding on the transfer of sovereignty, Union Jack could not replace the Lion Flag.

Three years later, when a rebellion took place in Kandy against the British rule, Sri Sumangala removed the Tooth Relic of Buddha (regarded by the Sinhalese as the symbol, the possession of which gives the right to any one to rule over them) from Dalada Maligawa, went into hiding, and later handed it over to the chieftain, Keppetipola Disawe, who was leading the rebellion.

The British captured the relic and Sri Sumangala in 1818, and after convicted for ‘treason’, Sumangala was imprisoned in Jaffna.

British imperialism eventually bowing down from the island and hoisting the lion flag at Paththirippuwa becoming an annual ritual ever since the independence of Sinhalese are matters of history.

The Kandyan Convention never satisfied the Sinhalese.

Rather than remembering the Kandyan Convention, an elite decision to collaborate with the conquerors, today’s Sinhalese take pride only in the resistance shown by Sri Sumangala.

If the Sinhalese could apply their sentiments in an enlightened way in understanding the Eezham Tamils – their sibling nation for centuries in the island – they could see why the Eezham Tamils have to regain their sovereignty by struggling against agent-imperialists in Colombo backed by imperialists.

Bringing in foxes, apes and donkeys to replace the tigers and showing those as leaders willing to collaborate, is the age-old tactic of imperialism re-enacted in the case of Eezham Tamils. But as history shows, that will not last long.

If the Sinhala masses and their elite think that they have a ‘common history’ for Sinhalese and Eezham Tamils in the island, then rather than being carried away by the agent-imperialists, they should help restoring the sovereignty of Eezham Tamils for peaceful co-existence and for partnership in facing the threats of imperialism in the island.

If they don’t see it, then they only concede that ‘history is different’ to Eezham Tamils and Sinhalese, and thus everything else too are different.

The following is a feedback received from a Sinhala reader:

A short while ago I read the TN article titled "Whether history is different to Tamils and Sinhalese". Just a small suggestion to make the argument more clearer.

I think there is even a much powerful and classic case which exemplifies the vicious dividing line between the ethnic meanings of "heroism", call it "the right to martyrdom" if you like.

While the sinhalese do enjoy an absolute right to pay tribute to their martyrs, the Tamils aren't.

The dividing line is not whether they rose up in arms against the state or not, but to which ethnicity they belonged.

On the November 27, the people in Tamil Eelam were prevented from commemorating the heroic generations who fought and died for national emancipation.

Heroes Day observed by JVP dissidents
Heroes Day observed by JVP dissidents
Heroes Day observed by JVP
Heroes Day observed by JVP
But just two weeks before, on the 13th of November in the heart of Colombo, the JVP commemorated in a grand scale (both the 'official party' and the dissident faction) the Sinhalese youth who fought against the state and died in the late '80s.

That's not all, the absurdity goes even further: during the war against the Tamils, the JVP (both factions together) backed the State armed forces to the fullest extent and justified their brutality.

It was they who pioneered and initiated the "Manel Mal Movement" which organized the strongest countrywide propaganda campaign to glorify the state armed forces.

But once the mission was accomplished by slaughtering hundreds and thousands of Tamils, the same JVP returns to commemorate their dead comrades who were slaughtered by the same armed forces, and the state does not obstruct it.

They have their "the right to martyrdom" because the Tamils don't!

Che Guevara, Hero of the revolution:
