Sri Lanka’s human rights record as bad as South Africa under Apartheid': Haigh

Criticizing Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr’s support to holding the CHOGM in Sri Lanka, former Australian diplomat Bruce Haigh opined that Sri Lanka at the head of the Commonwealth would bring the institution’s demise, arguing that “Sri Lanka has a human rights record as bad as South Africa under Apartheid.” In an article for ABC News on Thursday, Mr. Haigh further said that despite evidence to the contrary, Bob Carr “believes that the Sinhalese majority are free of triumphalism and ethnic abuse of Tamils, amounting to state sponsored genocide, following a bloody civil war that occurred because of the very attitudes and practices being deployed against Tamils today.” Asserting that the Rajapaksa regime undermines the values of the Commonwealth, the author further called on Australia to boycott the CHOGM.

Excerpts from Bruce Haigh’s article ‘Boats should not stop a CHOGM boycott’ published on ABC News follows:

“In the face of a great deal of evidence to the contrary, Bob Carr has declared Sri Lanka an ideal democracy.”

“He has declared their institutions sound, and scoffed at the idea of corruption within the ranks of the Rajapaksa government.”

“He has declared the police, army and navy to be clear of charges of detaining and torturing members of the Tamil minority. He believes that the Sinhalese majority are free of triumphalism and ethnic abuse of Tamils, amounting to state sponsored genocide, following a bloody civil war that occurred because of the very attitudes and practices being deployed against Tamils today.”

“And why has Carr adopted such a serendipitous attitude to Sri Lanka? It's called boats, where the curtailment of asylum seekers arriving off Australian shores overrides human rights and all other considerations of compassion and common sense. In order that the bipartisan policy of turning back, preventing or in some other way stopping the boats from sullying our shores, Carr must declare that everything is hunky dory in Sri Lanka and that anyone getting in a boat, risking their lives and spending money they don't have must be economic refugees; and a range of acolytes seeking government preferment puppet his response.”

“As a result of the Sri Lankan government's failure to investigate war crimes and because of its participation in ongoing repression of Tamils, the Canadian government has said it will boycott this year's CHOGM to be held in Sri Lanka. Should this meeting go ahead Sri Lanka will head the Commonwealth for the next two years. This is despite the fact that the Rajapaska regime undermines, on a daily basis, the values and principles of the Commonwealth.”

“Carr has rubbished the stand taken by Canada. The Queen has advised that she will not be attending; no doubt seeking to avoid the controversy that will inevitably surround the meeting should it go ahead. By accepting the mantle as head of the Commonwealth, Sri Lanka could well bring about its demise. Sri Lanka has a human rights record as bad as South Africa under Apartheid. It would have been unthinkable for South Africa to have hosted a CHOGM, so why is Sri Lanka being shoe horned into the job? In fact, so gravely were South Africa's human rights abuses viewed that the Commonwealth instituted sanctions, followed not long after by the UN.”

“ASIO does not have an independent capacity to gather information on the ground about persons of interest. They must rely on a friendly or cooperative government to provide them with police clearances and checks. We could not do that with Apartheid South Africa, although ASIO did maintain unofficial contact with the ruthless South African Bureau of State Security, and contact with countries behind The Iron Curtin, during the Cold War, for purposes of obtaining security clearances, did not happen.”

“For ASIO to continue its campaign against persons linked to the LTTE it must go along with the fiction that Sri Lanka is a neat and tidy democracy and is not conducting a post war vendetta against the Tamils and the military wing in that dispute, the LTTE.”

“In all conscience Australia must also boycott CHOGM.”

UK Sikh group calls for solidarity in anti-genocide rallies

1984 Genocide Coalition, a UK based Sikh group, has called for solidarity among diasporic Sikhs and Tamils for anti-genocide rallies on 18 May and 9 June in a release on Thursday. Stating that such protests “are an opportunity for these heroic struggling nations to unite their power of protest and unite their campaign resources”, the release further said that “the enduring, courageous struggles of Tamil and Sikh peoples against brutal states like Sri Lanka and India; epitomise the struggle of small nations around the world.” The activists from the Coalition and Nations Without States further urged small nations across the world to unite in a common movement for global justice and freedom.

“The struggles of the Tamils, Sikhs, Baluch, Tuareg, Tibetan, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Sikkim, West Papuan, Karen, Catalan, Basque, Kurd: represent a sample of the huge and diverse, global spread of liberation movements across the world for true democractic self-determination, people recognition, empowered and self-government,” the statement said.

Criticizing big states for their violent repression of nations, the statement further said “Nations were not born to be suppressed and subjugated and locked and subordinated to big states. They were born gradually, organically and naturally out of historic struggles; to share, contribute and input as equals into regional and global affairs. Our struggles are for a truly democratic world, which is composed of a plurality of true, natural nations.”

The name of the ‘1984 Genocide Coalition’ is derived from the memory of Operation Blue Star and anti-Sikh pogroms that happened in the year 1984.

Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation against pro-Khalistan Sikh rebels from 3-8 June 1984, which involved the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The Golden Temple is considered to be the holiest Sikh shrine.

The military operation is criticized by several Sikh and independent human rights sources to have involved hundreds of civilian casualties, besides physical destruction to the Golden Temple.

Likewise, the 1984 mass pogroms against the Sikhs organized by Congress party led mobs in several parts of North India followed the assassination of Indira Gandhi in October that year.

It is estimated that over 11,000 Sikhs perished in the massacres, with over 3000 being killed in the Indian capital New Delhi alone.

Several Congress leaders who were known to have been active participants in the pogroms are still in high positions in the party.

ராஜூவின் இந்த செயலால் குஜராத் தொழில் வளர்ச்சிக்கழக அதிகாரிகள் திகைப்படைந்துள்ளனர். தங்களது வாழ்வில் இவ்வளவு பெரிய தொகை திரும்ப வந்துள்ளது இதுவே முதல் முறை என்று தெரிவித்துள்ள அவர்கள், வெறும் ரூ. 6 ஆயிரம் சம்பளத்தில் ஆட்டோ டிரைவர் வாழ்க்கையை நடத்தும் ராஜூ, இவ்வளவு பெரிய தொகைக்கு ஆசைப்படாதது தங்களுக்கு மிகவும் ஆச்சர்யமளிப்பதாக தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

UK Deputy PM’s awareness not on genocide

When Liberal Democratic MP, Simon Huges questioned UK Prime Minister’s decision to participate Sri Lanka CHOGM, the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, replied in the British Parliament on Wednesday, “We are all aware that the decision […] is controversial, especially in the light of the despicable human rights violations during the recent civil war.” But according to the Deputy PM, consequences could be expected only when Colombo continues to violate “political trials, regular assaults on legal professionals and suppression of press freedom”, and the implementation of the LLRC recommendations. It is exactly this reduction, twist and pretended unawareness of the UK that is in complicity with Sri Lanka’s genocide, and worse than that is the pretended unawareness of a section of diaspora ‘lobbyists’ on the treachery of the West, commented Tamil political observers.

While the diaspora Tamil lobbyists of the Western Establishments paint a picture of support coming from the West for ‘international investigations’ of war crimes, and argue that it is the way forward, the British Deputy Prime Minister has reduced the issue to “political trials” by Sri Lanka.

Even the questioner, Simon Huges has reduced the issue to mere ‘human rights’, without even specifying whether it is individual human rights of every individual in the island or collective human rights of Eezham Tamils as a nation that is primarily the issue.

Every one now try to project and deal with the issue, as it is something common to the whole of the island – another subtle way of detracting the plight of the Eezham Tamil nation offended by all of them.

The LLRC recommendations being the roadmap for the structural genocide of the nation of Eezham Tamils and the annihilation of the territorial identity of their nation forever, is well known to those who have carefully perused the recommendations.

In this respect, the LLRC recommendations are even worse than New Delhi’s original 13th Amendment provisions, many Tamil activists argue.

The repeated references coming from the USA and the UK, upholding the LLRC recommendations have to be the foremost target to counter by any Tamil politician, activist or lobbyist “against genocide.” But, a particular section of them miserably failed in denouncing the LLRC deception getting international status by the US-tabled resolutions at Geneva, commented Eezham Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island.

I have to tell my friend that I cannot support the decision of the Prime Minister to go to the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Sri Lanka because of the human rights record of the Sri Lankan Government. What can the Deputy Prime Minister tell us about how we can respond to that terrible regime’s record? What can we do to make sure that in future the Commonwealth does not just say it believes in human rights, but does something about it?

The Deputy Prime Minister:
We are all aware that the decision that the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary will attend the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Sri Lanka is controversial, especially in the light of the despicable human rights violations during the recent civil war. But I assure my right hon. Friend that the Government condemn those violations, the way in which political trials, regular assaults on legal professionals and suppression of press freedom continue, and the fact that too many recommendations of the lessons learnt and reconciliation commission have not been implemented. If such violations continue, and if the Sri Lankan Government continue to ignore their international commitments in the lead up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, of course there will be consequences.

The British tourism market to the island of Sri Lanka has seen an 18 per cent increase from last year, according a report by Colombo based financial reporter Feizal Samath, published in TTG Asia, a tour industry publication on Tuesday. The increase in British tourists choosing Sri Lanka “killing fields” as tourist destination comes following the reports and a law-priced air travel campaign by the British Airways, which recently resumed its services with three flights a week from London Gatwick to Colombo via Male.

The TTG report, citing statistics from Sri Lanka Tourism released in early May, named the main tourism markets to the island as India, the UK, Germany, France and the Maldives.

The TTG report also quoted Hiran Cooray, chairman of Jetwing Hotels as saying that the increase could also be due to many expatriate ‘Sri Lankan’ Tamils who carry British passports and travel to the island to see their relatives.

“However, other sources noted that British travellers were choosing to stay in cheaper accommodation,” the news report said adding that Indian arrivals to the island as having declined due to the protests in Tamil-dominated Southern India.

“Explore the exotic wonders of Sri Lanka with its picturesque beaches, rich culture, and aromatic cuisine,” says a campaign by the British Airways.

Genocide of Tamils one of the worst mass killings in history: MPP Glen Murray

“The 40 000 plus killed in the Tamil genocide is one of the worst mass killings sanctioned by a state in history, ” stated Glen Murray, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Toronto Centre while hosting the third annual Tamil Memorial Tree Planting event on Saturday at Evergreen Brick Works, a community environmental centre. The Evergreen Brick Works houses the first memorial dedicated to the victims of the Tamil genocide and was erected in 2011 by Mr.Murray. The memorial remembers the events from Black July to Mu'l'livaikkaal and all trees are planted to create a memorial forest to honour the Tamil lives lost in the pursuit of justice and freedom, the organizers said. On the same day in a symbolic move Frank Scarpitti, the Mayor to Markham city unveiled a new street named after the Vanni, the region of the Tamil homeland which endured the brunt of the genocidal atrocities in 2009.

“This project started when we talked about what brought us to Canada. In the case of Tamils it was escaping oppression, marginalization and genocide. The 40 000 plus killed in the Tamil genocide is one of the worst mass killings sanctioned by a state in history”, stated Glen Murray while recapping on why the event is held annually.

Mr.Murray drew comparisons to other communities who had suffered similarly to emphasize the importance of not only remembering but also continuing to fight.

He went on to further say, “The reason and goal of planting tens of thousands of trees is to remember all those lives lost, and this future forest can be a symbolic representation of those people. As we lay down new roots, we hope this will continue to be a living memorial, so we don’t forget. It is how we resolve that the Sri Lankan government did not win.”

Addressing the crowd of participants, Krisna Saravanamuttu from the National Council of Canadian Tamils affirmed that, “In the years to come we will make this park into a living testament to our commitment to freedom, justice, dignity and the rights of nations to self-determination."

He further stated that, "We come here every year to not just remember the dead but to reaffirm our roots in the struggle. We come here to strengthen our collective commitment to fighting for Tamil justice and freedom. From South Africa, to Northern Ireland, to Algeria, the common denominator for peace and justice was an ever-evolving resistance and building international solidarity. The root causes that led to the war have intensified through a protracted genocide manifested through occupation, colonization and ethnic cleansing. When the so called international community refuses to address the root cause of the ongoing genocide our only course of action in the coming year is grassroots struggle."

In concluding the event Mr.Murray encouraged everyone to join him in attending the annual large-scale mobilization by the Tamil community to remember the Tamil genocide on May 18th.

Earlier in the day Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Councillor Logan Kanapathi along with other members of Markham City Council hosted the official unveiling of ‘Vanni Street’ to the public.

This move is seen by the Tamil community to carry symbolic significance as the region of the Vanni suffered the brunt of the genocidal atrocities being committed on the Tamil nation.

Thanking Councillor Kanapathi and Markham city, Neethan Shan, Eezham Tamil activist and President of the Ontario New Democratic Party- commented that, “It serves as a beautiful symbol that recognizes the economic, political, social and cultural development of Tamils in Canada. In addition, it is definitely a symbol of our resistance, as it counteracts the attempts by the Sri Lankan state to erase the history of the Tamils through a concerted cultural genocide.

“Along with all the other reasons, I strongly feel that Vanni Street will function as a symbol for remembering all the victims of the genocide as well as the many tens of thousands of Tamils who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom,” he added.

ஆந்திர பல்கலைக்கழகம்: தமிழறிஞர் மு.வ.வின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க, ஆந்திரத்தில் உள்ள சிறந்த பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் ஒன்றான திருப்பதி திருவேங்கடன் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தொடங்கப்பட்ட தமிழ்த் துறை இப்போது பொன்விழா கண்டுள்ளது. அங்குள்ள பேராசிரியர்கள் பற்றாக்குறையைப் போக்கும் வகையில், மூன்று உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்கள் பணியிடங்கள் உருவாக்கப்படும்.

தில்லி தமிழ்ச் சங்கம்: தில்லி தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் கோரிக்கையை ஏற்று சங்கத்துக்கு தோரண வாயில் கட்டுவதற்கு நிதியுதவியாக ரூ.25 லட்சம் வழங்கப்படும். உலகத் தமிழ் ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனத்தில் தொல்காப்பியத்தின் பெயரால் ஆய்விருக்கை ஏற்படுத்தப்படும். இதற்காக ரூ.50 லட்சம் வைப்புத் தொகையாக வைக்கப்படும்.

அண்ணா நினைவிடத்தில் பூங்கா: சென்னை கடற்கரைச் சாலையில் உள்ள அண்ணா நினைவிடத்தில் 3 ஏக்கர் பரப்பிலான காலியிடத்தில் இயற்கை எழில் கொஞ்சும் பூங்கா அமைக்கப்படும் என்று முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா அறிவித்தார்.
