‘Development’ vehicle claims life of woman, villagers confront police

A 40-year-old woman was killed on the spot in an accident on Wednesday at Ee'raavoor where a vehicle of a UN agency, carrying foreign officials, hit a group of women crossing the street at Ampa'laththadi. Another woman and a 12-year-old girl were rushed to hospital with injuries. The officials were returning after inspecting a ‘development’ project in Kudumpimalai, where Tamils are continuously harassed by the occupying SL military. The villagers, angered by the incident started to throw stones at the vehicle blaming irresponsible driving and the SL police retaliated by assaulting the villagers. The villagers then started to clash with the SL police, causing injuries to three policemen.

The female killed in the accident was identified as Pushpa Ponnuthurai.

A student, seriously injured in the assault by the Sri Lankan police and the military, was rushed to Batticaloa Teaching hospital.

The wounded policemen have been admitted at Chengkaladi hospital.

In the meantime, the SL Police at Ea'raavor said that the driver of the vehicle has been detained for inquiries and that three villagers were arrested on the charges of attacking the vehicle.

மெக்சிகோ சிட்டி: மெக்சிகோ நாட்டை சேர்ந்த கர்ப்பிணி ஒருவர், ஒன்பது சிசுக்களை சுமந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அடுத்த மாதம் 20ம் தேதி இவருக்கு பிரசவ தேதி குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அமெரிக்காவின் கலிபோர்னியாவை சேர்ந்த பெண், கடந்த 2009ல் ஒரே பிரசவத்தில் ஒன்பது குழந்தைகளை பெற்றது தான் உலக சாதனையாக கருதப்பட்டது. இதே போல, தற்போது மெக்சிகோ நாட்டின் கோயஹுய்லா பகுதியை சேர்ந்த கர்லா வனிசா என்ற பெண், ஒன்பது குழந்தைகளை சுமந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அமெரிக்காவின் டெக்சாஸ் மாகாணத்தின் எல்லை பகுதிக்கு அருகே இவரது ஊர் உள்ளது.இந்த பெண்ணின் வயது குறிப்பிடப்படவில்லை. தற்போது இந்த பெண் சால்டிலோ நகர மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். அடுத்த மாதம், 20ம்தேதி இவரது பிரசவ தேதி குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவரது கர்ப்பப்பையில் ஒன்பது சிசுக்கள் உள்ளன. இவற்றில் ஆறு பெண்கள், மூன்று ஆண்கள். அனைத்து குழந்தைகளும் நலமாக பிரசவமாக வேண்டும், என்பதில் டாக்டர்கள் அக்கறை செலுத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

பரமக்குடி:ராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்டம் பரமக்குடியில், குழந்தைக்காக சுடுதண்ணீர் கேட்பது போல நடித்து, கொள்ளையடிக்க முயன்றவருடன் கை அறுபட்ட நிலையிலும் போராடி, போலீசில் பிடித்துக் கொடுத்தார் வீரப்பெண் சாந்தி.பரமக்குடி பாசிபவளக்காரத் தெருவை சேர்ந்தவர் சாந்தி, 40. கணவர் அர்ச்சுனன் வெளிநாட்டில் வேலை பார்க்கிறார். வீட்டில் சாந்தி தனியாக இருந்தபோது, நேற்று காலை 10.30 மணிக்கு ஒருவர் வந்தார். தனது குழந்தையை மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்த்திருப்பதாகவும், பால் பாட்டிலை காட்டி, கழுவ சுடுதண்ணீர் வேண்டுமென கேட்டார். சாந்தி, சுடுதண்ணீர் வைக்க சமையலறைக்கு சென்றார். பின்னால் ஓடி வந்த அந்த நபர் கத்தியைக் காட்டி மிரட்டி, நகையை தருமாறு மிரட்டினார்.

தாலிச்சங்கிலி உட்பட நகைகளை கழற்றுவது போல பாவனை செய்த சாந்தி, திடீரென கொள்ளையன் வைத்திருந்த கத்தியை பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, அவனை சமையலறையில் இருந்து வீட்டு வராண்டா வரை இழுத்து வந்தார்.இதில் அவரது கை அறுபட்டது. விடாமல் வீட்டின் வெளியே இழுத்து வந்த போது, நிலைதடுமாறிய கொள்ளையன் கீழே விழுந்தான். பின்னர் சாந்தி கூச்சலிட்டார். இதை கேட்டு பொதுமக்கள் ஓடிவந்து, கொள்ளையனை பிடித்து, அருகில் உள்ள மரத்தில் கட்டிவைத்து உதைத்தனர். தகவல் தெரிவித்தும் அரைமணிநேரம் கழித்து, டவுன் போலீசார் வந்தனர். கொள்ளையடிக்க பயன்படுத்திய கத்தியை கைப்பற்றி, இளையான்குடி அருகே அம்முகுடியை சேர்ந்த கொள்ளையன் ரமேஷை, 32, கைது செய்து விசாரித்து வருகின்றனர்.சாந்தி கூறுகையில், ""உழைத்த பணத்தில் வாங்கிய நகையை பறிகொடுக்க மனமில்லை. இந்த நினைப்பே எனக்கு வீரத்தை வரவழைத்தது. என்ன ஆனாலும் பரவாயில்லை, என துணிந்து போராடினேன். துணிச்சல் எனது நகையை காப்பாற்றியது, என்றார்.

Resettled Tamil woman's body recovered near SLA bund in Thenmaraadchi

The skeleton of a recently slain 28-year-old unmarried Tamil woman has been recovered near an abandoned military bund used by the Sri Lanka Army in A'rukuve'li, located along Kearatheevu Road (Jaffna - Mannaar Road) in Thenmaraadchi on Wednesday. The victim, Atputhamalar Subramaniyam, who had resettled in Thanangki'lappu near Ma'ravanpulavu of Thenmaraadchi last year, has been missing since November 13. But, her family was receiving SMS messages for some time from her cell phone. The abductors have been sending the messages with the intention of making the family to believe that she was not abducted, relatives of the victim who came for the funeral on Thursday told media. Tension prevailed in the recently resettled area where the occupying SLA is still on random patrol.

Thanangki'lappu village, where the victim was living, was allowed for resettlement in July 2011.

The A'rukuve'li area where her remains were found is still regarded as a military area, although SL Presidential sibling Basil Rajapaksa had declared the area for resettlement last year. Even after 16 years, the SL military is still using the area, and civilian access remains restricted.

The skeleton was found by rabbit-hunters who went to the area.

The judge of Chavakachcheari courts P. Anantharaja and the forensic medical officer from the Jaffna hospital Dr. Sivarooban visited the site with the SL police from Chaavakachcheari.

The father of Atputhamalar identified the remains as that of his daughter by recognizing the cloths and the hair of the slain victim.

The remains were sent to Jaffna hospital for medical examinations and the judge allowed the family to conduct the funeral on Thursday.

Muslim woman knifed to death in Batticaloa

The body of a 69-year old Muslim woman, Vellaikutty Vellai Umma, was recovered with cut injuries on her neck on December 26 in her house located along S.L. Hajiar Road in Ward 5 of Vaalaichcheanai in Vaalaichcheanai police division in Batticaloa district, police sources said. The woman went to her daughters’ house at Buhari Road in Oaddamaavadi, and was later found dead with cut injuries with pointed weapon.

Vellai Umma's son, a Samurdhi officer was taken into custody by the Vaalaichchenai police when his statement to police was found to be contradictory and unsatisfactory.

Her body was first handed over to Vaalaichcheanai Base Hospital and then to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for further examination.

Oaddamaavadi is located 32 km off Batticaloa town.
