Ki’linochchi rises up against resettlement farce and SL military occupation

More than 50% of the participants, who took part in a protest held opposite the District Secretariat of Ki'linochchi district on Thursday, were parents of missing persons, allegedly abducted or arrested and held incomunicado by the occupying Sri Lankan military. The protestors who carried the photos of their missing kith and kin, put forward three main demands to the SL State and to the United Nations Human Rights Council, to end Sinhala colonisation in the Tamil homeland, to ensure freedom of movement to the civilians to resettle in their own houses and to reveal the whereabouts of their loved ones. The protest, organised by the Tamil National Alliance, saw the participation of Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) and Democratic Peoples Front (DPF).



TNA leaders, Mavai Senathiraja, S. Sritharan and Vino Noakraathalingam, together with DPF leader Mano Ganesan and Selvaraja Kajendren, the general secretary of the TNPF, attended the peoples’ protest.

The Sri Lankan State, which has not recognized the resolution passed during the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in March this year, is continuing with the same trend of subjugating the Tamil people, Maavai Senathiraja, a leader of the ITAK told the gathering.

While Mavai Senathiraja of the TNA was harping on the US-tabled Geneva resolution, Selvarajah Kajendren of the TNPF criticised the TNA for having failed to set the course in correct direction.

By failing to attend the UNHRC sessions and by simply calling for the countries to back the resolution, the TNA not only failed in setting the trend, but also shares the responsibility in the post-Geneva scenario for having brought the accountability process onto an LLRC-based track, which is full of traps, Mr Kajendren said. While xtending TNPFs support to agitations being organised by the TNA, Kajendren also appreciated the TNA for taking part in the protests organised by the TNPF.

SL military grabs disabled people's land in Ki'linochchi

The occupying Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Ki'linochchi district has instructed the Sri Lankan Government Agent (SLGA) of the district to permanently hand over 6 acres of lands already encroached by the 65-2 division of the SLA at Aanaivizhunthaan-ku'lam GS area of Karaichchi division. The land, which is owned by a rehabilitation organisation for disabled persons, is located 10 km southwest of Ki'linochchi town.

The facility was functioning before the war with a technical training centre for disabled people and a secretariat of the organisation in the land, which has been grabbed by the SLA.

The SLA has been refusing to hand over the lands to the disabled people's rehabilitation organisation, despite the repeated appeals made by the organisation.

Now, the SLGA of the Ki'linochchi district has been instructed by the top brass of the SLA to hand over the lands permanently to the SLA, informed sources at the District Secretariat of Ki'linochchi told TamilNet.

SL Army threatens to destroy Sivan temple to construct Buddhist Vihara in Ki'linochchi

The occupying Sri Lanka Army is said to have planned to demolish the historical Chivanakar Siva temple in Uruththirapuram in Ki'linochchi district and to construct a Buddhist Vihare in that site, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian S. Sritharan has said. The Tamil parliamentarian has urged the Colombo government to stop the demolition of the Hindu temple. Around 40 soldiers of the occupying SLA came to the temple on Friday 27 March evening in three vehicles and entered the temple without the permission from the chief priest and desecrated the temple by walking in their military boots and threatened to destroy the temple and construct a Buddhist vihara at the site.

Thereafter they searched the entire temple including the core centre known as Moolasthanam under the pretext that they received reports that a Buddha statue had been hidden inside the temple.

Failing to locate it, they deployed two policemen and four army men to guard the temple stating that Buddhist scriptures and archaeological findings were buried in the heap of bricks found near the Saiva temple.

Saivaites in the area had rushed to the site and protested against the occupying SL Army desecrating the temple. But, the SL army had threatened the people not to divulge about the search to anyone, especially the media.

The army personnel then left the temple after saying that they would destroy the temple and construct a Buddhist Vihara there.

De-miners locate remains of cluster bomb in Ki'linochchi

A container allegedly deployed by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) to carry cluster bomblets has been recovered recently by the de-miners of the humanitarian de-mining agency Halo Trust near a house at Thiruvaiuyaa'ru, 3 km east of Ki'linochchi town, media sources told TamilNet on Wednesday providing a photo displaying the container placed at the office of the Halo Trust. The markings on the case have been masked by painting, allegedly by the SLAF before the bombardment, a practice observed following the exposure of SLAF deploying banned weapons in 2009. Despite the systematic destruction of crucial evidences of war-crimes and genocide in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils following May 2009 by the Sri Lankan military, humanitarian de-miners have obtained parts of cluster bombs that were heavily used by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) during the war, the sources further said.

The de-mining agency has not allowed journalists or public to access the site where the evidence is preserved.

Despite several references made by civilians of cluster and chemical bombs (referred to by the survivors as “koththuk-ku'ndu” and “eri ku'ndu”) during their testimonies to the LLRC, an eyewash and time buying exercise set-up by the Colombo establishment, there was not a single word in its final report on the grave and systematic violation.

The main criticism by the Eezham Tamil civil society in the homeland and the Eezham Tamil grassroots in the Diaspora and in Tamil Nadu on the US-proposed draft resolution, currently tabled at the UN Human Rights Council, is that the flawed Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report issued in November 2011 should not be the basis for any international accountability mechanism.

During the war, TamilNet has brought out photographic evidences and eyewitness accounts of a number of cluster attacks from November 2008 onwards (See related stories below). TamilNet's wartime correspondent in Vanni had witnessed systematic use of cluster bombs by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), which also fired shells that carried cluster munitions on civilian targets.

As the photos began appearing in TamilNet, the SLAF began to mask Russian alphabets on the containers by paint (See photos in the stories from January 2009).

The final report by the Permanent People's Tribunal in Dublin in January 2010 had the following observations on the alleged use of cluster munitions by the SL military:

“The atrocities carried out by the military relate particularly to civilians, and there is evidence of cluster munitions being dropped by warplanes. Some witnesses reported that white phosphorous was used in violation of international law. Several witnesses had seen burn marks on wounded civilians. Others believed that indications of napalm were apparent, and evidence of other incendiary devices has been confirmed by doctors who had cared for hundreds of Tamil civilians wounded in this manner.”

The Dublin report concluded its chapter on “The Atrocities of the Last Weeks of the War” with the following paragraph: “The use of artillery and illegal weapons such as white phosphorus and cluster munitions places the government outside accepted international legal standards. It is not surprising that charges of atrocities, ethnic cleansing and indeed genocide have been levelled at Colombo. War crimes and crimes against humanity clearly appear to have been committed.”

The UNSG Expert Panel Report, which was finalised in March 2011, has registered the alleged use of cluster ammunitions in Vanni war with the following words in its paragraph 169:

“There are allegations that the SLA used cluster bomb munitions or white phosphorus or other chemical substances against civilians, particularly around PTK and in the second NFZ. Accounts refer to large explosions, followed by numerous smaller explosions consistent with the sound of a cluster bomb. Some wounds in the various hospitals are alleged to have been caused by cluster munitions or white phosphorus. The Government of denies the use of these weapons and, instead, accuses the LTTE of using white phosphorus”.

SLA encroaches 100 acres of farmland in Ki'linochchi

The occupying Sri Lanka Army in Vanni has forcibly taken over about one hundred acres of farmland situated between the villages Shanthapuram and Kanakaampikaik-ku'lam 5 km southeast of Ki'linochchi town. Earlier, the farmland was the livelihood of hundreds of people under a poverty alleviation scheme under the civil administration of the LTTE. A church and a well used by the residents of Shaanthapuram and Ira'naimaduk-ku'lam are also located in the land militarised by the occupying SL military. The SL military says it wants to exhibit military hardware seized from the Tigers in the farmland, which is situated near Ira'naimadu.

The SLA has fenced the seized land  to confirm their possession.

The SLA soldiers who brought two tanks and three artillery guns that were seized from the LTTE to the lands and said the military was planning to exhibit military hardware of the Tigers in the land now being occupied from the civilians. Some families in the acquired lands are given alternative lands elsewhere.

Meanwhile a portion of land located east of Thiru-mu'rika'ndi village along A-9 highway is brought under “High Security Zone” by the SLA.

Residents of this area still remain as uprooted people in so-called welfare centres and with relatives and friends although they possess legal documents to prove their ownership of their lands in HSZ.

The SL authorities have refused to accommodate their requests to allow their resettlement in their legally owned lands.

However the setting up of SLA camps and destruction of coconut plantations and other food crops in the land are continuing, the uprooted people complained.

The Ira'naimadu tank is the largest irrigation scheme in the Northern province. The occupying military wishes to keep lands close to the dam under its permanent control, political observers in Vanni said.

The news illusrated here is wrong. Once we compare the number of displaced people from Kilinochchi soon after the military invasion,resettled number is very small. According to my knowledge about Kilinochchi, nearly 7% of the population have been resettled in few villages. Rest of them still in the camps or in out side in Vavuniya. Please don't write like this in future.

Prabakaran death certificate is already given to indian government. This has come in many news paper on couple of months ago. Death of Mr.praba has changed the people life in the island. Young tamil people started their school life with out the fear of abduction. Brainwashing curriculam which has portrayed a coward as a leader have been removed. I wish more peace and prosperity prevail in the island under the rule of mr.rajabakshe.
