Colombo deploys ‘military land-surveyors’ to seize more lands in Pulmoaddai

The occupying Sri Lankan military is seizing more lands in Pulmoaddai, a traditional Muslim village in the coast along the border of the Northern and Eastern provinces. In its latest move, the SL military has surveyed 60 acres of lands situated in front of an army camp at 14th Mile Post. Openly claiming that the lands are being taken over for the families of Sri Lankan soldiers under the so-called ‘Ranaviru Gammanaya’ project, the SL military has deployed its own surveyors without the knowledge of the Department of Civil Survey and the Divisional Secretary of the division, civil sources in Trincomalee told TamilNet.

The Muslims of Pulmoaddai have been protesting against the accelerated land appropriation taking place in their traditional village.

As the civil survey officials were being stopped by the protesting Muslims, Colombo has now deployed ‘military land surveyors’ to do the work, the sources further said.

The SL military has also deployed several heavy equipments to clear these lands earlier used by Muslim farmers who possess legal documents and permits as owners.

The occupying Colombo, intensely spearheading a Sinhala colonisation programme to wedge the North and East at several strategic locations in the north of Trincomalee district, has already appropriated several hundred acres of paddy lands of Muslims at Arisi-malai and Naaka-malai in Pulmoaddai under the “Buddha Pooja Boomi,” scheme to construct new Buddhist Viharas in Pulmoaddai village.

Colombo is also appropriating about five hundred acres of land in Chuvaami-malai area in the traditional Tamil village of Thennai-maravadi, located just north of Pulmoaddai.

Pulmoaddai Muslims protest against Colombo's land survey

Stating that 500 acres of lands were being taken over for archaeological research, the lands were being seized from Muslims at 14th Mile Post in Pulmoaddai in Kuchchave'li division in Trincomalee district, said protesting Muslims who opposed the move by the Sri Lankan government on Monday. The residents of predominantly Muslim village took to the streets when SL survey department officials attempted to survey the lands despite repeated objections by the Muslims.

150 houses that had been given to Tsunami affected civilians at Ponmalaik-kudaa were also being appropriated within the said 500 acres of lands.

Muslim residents have land deeds for several lands that were being surveyed for seizure under the cover of so-called archaeological research.

Following the protest by Muslims, the surveying has been put off, civil officials in Pulmoaddai told media.

Even the sole Muslim cemetery in Pulmoaddai at the narrow border between the North and East of the country of Ezham Tamils was not spared from appropriation by the occupying Sinhala military that bents on Sinhalicising and militarizing the strategic link. While the Tamil-speaking Muslims, who make 90 per cent of the traditional village of Pul-moaddai is left without a cemetery, about 500 acres of land in that place has been given to a Buddhist monk to build a Sinhala-Buddhist enclave. The military and Survey Department of the Sinhala State were openly involved in the project. The blatant demographic genocide takes place while there is a Muslim Chief Minister in the East, proving what is ultimately aimed by the Provincial Councils backed by New Delhi and Washington, political activists in the East said.

The Muslim cemetery of the coastal village is appropriated by the occupying Sinhala State Navy.

Apart from the cemetery, Muslim lands in the village are also taken over on a massive scale, news sources said.

Last week, a meeting was held in the office of the chief minister of the Eastern Provincial Council to discuss the ongoing appropriation of lands belonging to Muslims in Pulmoaddai.

But the provincial system may not be able to do any thing political observers said.

Pul-moaddai (meaning grassy pond), situated at a sandbar on the side of the Eastern Province of the North-East border, is not only a must location from the genocidal point of view, but is also a place of significant economic importance because of the ilmanite deposits found there beneath the white sand dunes.

During the genocidal war, the military of New Delhi Establishment had a station there ostensibly for the purpose of medical assistance, but actually to coordinate monitoring.

It is likely that the international Establishments are interested in militarizing Pul-moaddai. But as they have no choice other than promoting Sinhala military, the structural genocide taking place at Pul-moaddai and throughout the country of Ezham Tamils also cannot be stopped, unless masses take up the struggle in different dimensions, making it inevitable for the involved powers to deliver justice, political observers in the island commented.

Colombo steps up Sinhalicisation of Pulmoaddai to wedge North and East

Tamil-speaking Muslims living in their village of Pulmoaddai, situated near the administrative border to the districts of Trincomalee in the East and Mullaiththeevu in the North, now face appropriation of their lands by Sinhala Buddhist monks who have come from Hambantota in the South, news sources in the East said. Local Muslim leaders fear that the Sri Lankan State and the occupying Sri Lanka Navy are planning to colonize their traditional Muslim village with Sinhalese, outnumbering them. Pulmoaddai is situated on the edge of strategic Ma'nal-Aa'ru, which has been recently carved out as a Sinhala division to wedge the North from the East. Pulmoddai also has one of the richest deposits of Titanium ore in the world. The sands in the area contain ilmenite and rutile, raw materials for manufacturing Titanium Dioxide.

Almost 95 percent of the population of Pulmoaddai village are Muslims.

Earlier, the SL Navy has appropriated several lands and houses belonging to Muslim residents along the coastal areas of Pulmoaddai, especially Ponmalai and other suburbs.

Recently, the SL Navy has constructed a Buddhist vihara and installed a statue of Lord Buddha in a land after forcibly evicting the Muslim residents from there.

Now Buddhist monks from the South invade and appropriate lands belonging to Muslims.

One Buddhist monk from Hambantota has appropriated around 500 acres of land allegedly for the construction of a Buddhist Vihara at Arisi Malai along the sea coast of Pulmoaddai. That monk had got the services of SL government surveyors to survey more lands.

Another Buddhist monk, from Dambulla, has appropriated one acre of land for the construction of a Buddhist religious hall. In addition to this, the monk has also appropriated ten more acres of paddy field belonging to Muslim farmers to construct another Vihara there, news sources in Pulmoaddai said.

Muslim residents in the area say they possess legal and other documents to prove their ownership of the lands taken over by the SL Navy and the Buddhist monk from South.

But, the SL Navy has been refusing to hand over these lands despite the repeated appeals made to them via the Trincomalee District Co-ordinating Committee by the Muslim parliamentarians.

The occupying Sri Lanka Navy in Trincomalee district has appropriated lands belonging to Muslim villagers in Ma'nki'ndimalai, Ponmalai-kudaa, Theaththaatheevu and Veerantheevu in Pulmoaddai village that comes under the Kuchchave'li DS division in Trincomalee district. SLN sources say that these lands are urgently needed to construct camps. The villagers who were displaced during the war, who now want to resettle in their villages, are being prevented by the Sinhala Navy that tells them to find alternative places.

The parliamentary group leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and parliamentarian of the Trincomalee district Mr. R. Sampanthan on Wednesday visited the villages in question and met the representatives of the local Muslim community.

He was told that they were displaced in the war and now they want to resettle in these villages.

The Sri Lanka Navy that has already a camp in the area now wants to establish more camps.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council Mr. Najeeb Abdul Majeed, had directed them to the provincial director of lands, the villagers told Mr Sampanthan.
