Girl student sexually assaulted in Batticaloa near SLA, STF camps

Tamil women from the East continue to be vulnerable to sexual assaults allegedly at the hands of Sinhala men even as another incident of sexual assault on a 17-year-old student was reported in Batticaloa district on Thursday last week.

A girl student from Veappaveddavaan village was rescued from a bush in a sexually abused state on Thursday.

The girl was sexually assaulted in Chengkaladi - Badulla A5 Highway that comes under Karadiyanaa’ru police limits within the division of Ea'raavoor-pattu (Chengkaladi) of the Batticaola district.

The girl is studying arts at GCE (A/L) level at Thannaamunai Va'lanaar School.

On June 20, she had reportedly left for the educational institution and was on her way to home when the abuse took place at Theakkangcheanai after the girl had got down from a bus.

It is reported the miscreants who committed the shameful act remain ‘unidentified’.

A Sri Lanka Special Task Force (STF) camp is situated at Iluppaiyadich-cheanai where the girl had got down from the bus. A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp is situated close to the site at Maavadi-oadai.

It may be recalled that a 45-year-old woman was abused last May by four Sinhalese men in the Batticaloa district.

In the meantime, SL military intelligence officers of the occupying Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the north of Vaakarai are reportedly frequenting the houses of former LTTE members and combatants under the pretext of investigations and are attempting to sexually harass the wives while keeping their husbands in prolonged detention.

Uprooted Tamils in Champoor live in camps under flood water

Uprooted Champoor Tamil families numbering about 1,250 are undergoing untold sufferings in temporary shelters due to ongoing heavy rain and strong winds. Temporary shelters situated in Kaddai-pa'richchaan, Ki'liveddi, Manatcheanai and Paddiththidal are under flood waters and the latrines are submerged in the water, according to C. Thandayuthapani, the opposition leader in the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC).

Mr.Thandayuthapani of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) paid a visit to Moothoor East and inspected the conditions of uprooted Tamil families sheltered in camps.

He said uprooted families now live in the camps without dry ration relief for the last several months as a ‘punishment’ by the Colombo government for their refusal to move out to alternative sites offered by the occupying Sri Lanka Army.

The uprooted families are deprived of livelihood and their children are suffering from several illnesses without medical assistance.

ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் திரு நா.மோகன்ராசு வரவேற்புரை ஆற்றினார். திருமதி ஈரோடு தமிழ்ச்செல்வி, திரு அசய்கார்த்திக், திரு ச.முத்துகிருட்டிணன் ஆகியோர் வாழ்த்துரை வழங்கினர்.

தமிழ்க்காப்புக்கழகத் தலைவர் திரு இலக்குவனார் திருவள்ளுவன் அவர்கள்   பட்டறையின நோக்கம், பயன் முதலியன பற்றிச் சிறப்புரை ஆற்றித் தொடக்கி வைத்தார். சாந்தோம் மேனிலைப்பள்ளித் தமிழாசிரியர் திரு எலியட்சு வாழ்த்தி நிறைவுரை ஆற்றினார். திரு குமார் நன்றி நவின்றார்.

மே 3 முதல் 18  ஆம் நாள் வரை பதினைந்து நாட்கள்  நடக்கும் இப்பயிலரங்கம்  காலை 8 மணி முதல் 10 வரை  நடைபெறும்.  இறுதி நாளன்று மாணவர்களை மேடையேற்றி அவர்களுடைய திறமையை வெளிக்கொணர்ந்து சான்றிதழும் வழங்கப்படும் . மாணவர்கள் கோடை விடுமுறையை நன்கு பயன்படுத்திகொள்ளவும்  அவர்களுடைய தமிழார்வத்தை வளர்க்கும் விதமாகவும்  மனப்பயிற்சித் திறனை மேம்படுத்தும் நோக்கிலும் அறநெறியில் வாழச் செய்ய வழிகாட்டவும் இப்பயிலரங்கம் தொடங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
