Jaffna demonstration backing students demands IC action

Jaffna demonstration backing students demands IC action, appeals to Tamil youth outside

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 December 2012, 10:19 GMT]
In an impressive show of solidarity on Tuesday, the TNPF-called demonstration in Jaffna condemning the attack on Jaffna university students and the arrest of student leaders by the occupying forces of Sri Lanka, was actively participated by the mainstream TNA, University Teachers Association, University Students Union, Jaffna Chamber of Commerce, Medical Association, Lawyers Association and other civil society organisations, besides progressive leftist party representatives from the South. The demonstrators demanded the IC to immediately recognize the nation, territoriality and right of self-determination of Tamils in order to ensure their safety and democratic rights. Questioning the trustworthiness of the IC, the demonstrators appealed to Tamil youth in the diaspora and in Tamil Nadu to take up continued agitations to the edification of the IC.

The occupying Sri Lankan military beefed up its deployment threatening the participants of the peaceful demonstration. The intelligence operatives of the SL military were also taking photos and video recordings of those who attended the protest.

The demonstration took place for nearly one-and-a-half hours from 11:00 a.m., in front of the Central Bus Stand of Jaffna.

Besides the Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) leaders Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and Kajendran, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians, Mavai Senadhirajah, Suresh Premachandran, E. Saravanabhavan and Sridharan, as well as Colombo Municipal member Baskaran led the demonstrations.

From the South of the island, representatives of Nava Samasamaja Party, New Left Front, Democratic Peoples Front and New Democratic Marxist-Leninists have come to Jaffna, to participate in the demonstration. As there was also a demonstration in Colombo on Tuesday on the issue of the impeachment of the SL Chief Justice, the southern parties have mostly sent representatives to the Jaffna demonstration.

There was heavy deployment of SL forces at the vicinity. SL military vehicles were running to and fro and the atmosphere was tensive.

The SL military intelligence was in fact vying with media in photographing and video documenting the particiapants of the demonstration.

The demonstrators decided to send a joint appeal of all the participant parties addressed to the United Nations.

Following the demonstration a meeting of leaders took place at the TNPF office, to discuss the current situation in the Jaffna University and to decide on the next move. All the participant parties of the demonstration took part in the meeting.

The appeal of the demonstrators briefly outlined the events related to Heroes Day observations in the university last year and this year.

Remembering the dead is a basic right, the appeal said.

The Jaffna University is a pivotal institution in the struggle of Tamils in the island. The oppression on the university by the SL government in the post-war time is aimed at the annihilation of the nation of Tamils in the island, the appeal cited.

The International Community (IC) has to understand this. So far the IC has not contributed in any meaningful way to Tamils in their homeland. It kept silent during the war. It keeps silent on the current atrocities committed on the nation of Tamils. It questions the credibility of the IC, the appeal further said, requesting youth in the diaspora and in Tamil Nadu to undertake continued agitations to direct the attention of the IC.

The demonstrators put forth the following four demands: Guaranteeing the Tamils their right to remember the dead; guaranteeing the security of Tamil students, particularly ensuring an environment for their political activism; ensuring the practice of democracy in the Tamil territory and finally, in order to ensure the above, immediately recognizing the nation, territoriality and right to self-determination of Tamils.

TNPF files revision application against Jaffna Magistrate for prohibiting protest

TNPF files revision application against Jaffna Magistrate for prohibiting protest

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 11 July 2012, 17:56 GMT]
Tamil National People’s Front Tuesday filed a revision application in the Jaffna High Court seeking to revoke the order of the Jaffna Magistrate, who banned the demonstration, which was scheduled to be held on June 18, against land appropriation in the district.

The Jaffna Magistrate has given his reasons on June 26 for his order prohibiting the demonstration as that the demonstration was threatening the national security, creating dissension among communities, attempts to lead the people to the dark era again for political gain over the suffering of people and that it seeks once again to deny democratic rights of people and to introduce armed culture to come to power making the people as political pawns.

The revision application by the TNPF have countered the reasons given by the Magistrate as having no legal basis. “There are no legal grounds for such allegations. The orders issued by the Magistrate on June 18 and June 27 are based on unfounded allegations,” the TNPF said.

The plaintiff says that reasons given by the Magistrate in his order should be considered as irrelevant considerations.

The Magistrate Court has no jurisdiction to ban a demonstration or a get together according to the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Magistrate has pointed out that he has been legally entitled to prevent a tense situation. But he has taken such stand citing an event by the police without basis.

The Magistrate has failed to provide material facts for his stand that he expects a riot or a revolt at that time of making ban order, the TNPF has said in its revision application.

Demonstrating UK Tamils expose India’s defiance of international refugee conventions

Demonstrating UK Tamils expose India’s defiance of international refugee conventions

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 July 2012, 00:31 GMT]
Demonstrating outside the Indian High Commission at India Place, London, Tamils in the UK demanded the immediate release of the detained inmates of the Chengalpet (Chengkal-paddu) ‘special camp’ and for the closure of that facility. Separate petitions submitted by TCC-UK to the UNHCR and the Indian High Commission called for a revision in the Indian approach to Eezham Tamil refugees in India. “Right now our priority is to shut down these special camps. Apart from that we can't expect much from India but we need the various agencies of the UN to communicate with each other to clarify that the isolated incidents witnessed by each when seen together is actually facilitating the genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation,” Sivatharshan Sivakumaravel, an activist from TCC-UK told TamilNet.

Demonstrators at the protest organized by the TCC-UK, supporting the demands of the hunger strikers at Chengalpet, urged India to comply with the standards of the UNHCR.

The petition submitted to the Indian High Commission, addressed to the state government of Tamil Nadu, urged TN to “take brave measures in addressing Eelam Tamil refugees, beginning with the immediate closure of all ‘special camps’”, also suggesting the development of robust mechanisms to ensure Tamil refugees are gives rights as enshrined in the 1951 refugee convention and its 1967 protocol.

Likewise the petition submitted to the UNHCR, which noted India’s role in assisting Sri Lanka’s colonization of the Tamil homeland, called on the UN to ensure the shutting down of such detention camps in TN, free access of NGOs in all refugee camps, and to protect the fundamental human rights of the Eezham Tamil refugees.

Meanwhile, the remaining inmates of Chengalpet camp have also joined the hunger strikers owing to no positive response from the government. Though 4 of the illegally detained inmates have been released over Sunday and Monday, the fate of the remaining is still uncertain.

Thirteen others may be released owing to pressures from the protests, in accordance with earlier promises, but the current hunger strike protest aims at nothing less than the closure of such illegal detention facilities and release of all inmates, informed sources from Chengalpet told TamilNet.

A prayer meeting for the hunger strikers is to be conducted tomorrow evening jointly by different Tamil Nadu political parties and civil society groups near Thiruvalluvar statue, at Mylapore.

The demonstration gains significance in the context of India that complicited a genocidal war and continue to abet the structural genocide against Eezham Tamils in the island, being elected to the UNHRC committee to monitor ‘progress’ in the island, commented Tamil diaspora activists.

The media in India, especially in Tamil Nadu, is calculatedly deviated to focus attention on dummy personalities in the island when the master culprits are within India, the activists further said.

India is not a signatory to the international conventions on refugees, even though it had made use of the issue of refugees in the secession of Bangladesh.

For more than half a century, and more than quarter a century respectively, the Tibetan and their inferior brethren, the Eezham Tamils in India, languish without any international status of refugees and no international remedy to their plights.

The demonstration is of a particular significance since India is never exposed to international screening of its dubious handling of the refugees issue, at a time when such issues have become transnational in questioning the global order machinated by the establishments of criminal record, the activists further said.

Over 200 activists from different Tamil Nadu political parties and civil society outfits, who had gathered at Chengalpet to protest the detention and harsh treatment of Eezham Tamil refugees in the ‘special camp’ there were arrested by the police on Saturday. Pressuring the police to release the protestors, 4 of the camp inmates climbed on trees and threatened to jump. After a brief parley, the detained activists were released by evening. Meanwhile, the condition of those hunger strikers who have been hospitalized has been further deteriorating, sources told TamilNet.

Neither the central nor the state government has responded to worsening condition of refugees on fast. Likewise, the refugees are also firm that they will not give up their fast until a just solution is arrived at, informed sources said.

After the demonstration by Tamils outside the Indian embassy in Berlin, protests by the Tamil diaspora criticizing the unjust treatment of Eezham Tamil refugees by the Indian state have been planned in other countries too.
