Defender of Tamil sovereignty selected for Queen's Jubilee medal in Canada

[TamilNet, Saturday, 16 June 2012, 11:13 GMT]
Showing a positive signal to the democratic struggle of Eezham Tamils, the Canadian government has selected Eezham Tamil youth activist Krishna Saravanamuttu for the award of Queen’s Jubilee Medal. 26-year-old Mr Saravanamuttu has been in the forefront advocating the need for an independent international investigation into the war crimes and genocide of Eezham Tamils by Sri Lanka. Mr. Saravanamuttu called on Canada to support the eviction of Sri Lanka from the Councils of the Commonwealth. He has also also been demanding a referendum among the Eezham Tamils on the basis of historical, earned and remedial aspects of Tamil sovereignty as the only means to check the protracted genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation.

Mr Glen Murray, the Canadian cabinet minister in-charge of universities, who nominated him for the award, told TamilNet, “Krisna has provided outstanding leadership in Canada's student movement, in his advocacy with the United Nations for justice for Tamils around the world and his leadership in building youth organizations committed to social justice and human equality.”

“He is one of our countries emerging leaders and demonstrates the personal integrity that has earned him the trust of so many and allowed him to accomplish so much,” Glen Murray further said.

Krishna is one of the 14 people nominated by the universities minister for the award, which will be presented to him on 3 July. Altogether, 60,000 Canadians will be getting the medal for their services to that country.

Speaking to TamilNet, Mr. Saravanamuttu, who is also currently the national spokesperson for the NCCT, said that his experience in working with activists in the student movement through the York Federation of Students and the Canadian Federation of Students remained pivotal to his own development as a political organiser. He added that he learned the links between different occupied nations and the Tamil liberation struggle through his activism in the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, the Canadian Peace Alliance, and the Palestinian freedom movement.

He further said “While I am extremely honoured to be recognized for my contributions in Canada, as recipient of this medal, I would like to emphasise the need for the commonwealth countries, especially Britain given its colonial legacy in the island of Sri Lanka, to hold the Sri Lankan state accountable for its genocide of the Eezham Tamil people. I call upon Prime Minister Harper to keep his promise to boycott the next Commonwealth meeting scheduled in Sri Lanka until the country's human rights record improves.”

Stressing the need for an independent international investigation into the war crimes of the GoSL and a referendum among the Eezham Tamils on the basis of historical, earned and remedial aspects of Tamil sovereignty as the only means to check the protracted genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation, Mr. Saravanamuttu called on Canada to support the eviction of Sri Lanka from the Councils of the Commonwealth.

Rajapaksa visit to Queen’s jubilee evokes spontaneous responses

Diamond Jubilee celebrating Queen of England hosting genocide-accused Sinhala President Mahinda Rajapaksa evokes spontaneous responses from the leadershipless Eezham Tamils all over the world. The responses emanating from dormant anger are actually addressed to the so-called international community and more than that, are directed against the mediocre claimants for leadership among Eezham Tamils who would not dare to take a step without getting ‘signals’ from the masters in the IC, commented a veteran Tamil political observer in London. Commenting further on the Sinhalese in London welcoming Rajapaksa, he said the Tamils have no qualms about it. The Sinhala nation has every right to seek recognition and it should articulate in every possible way. Our problem is the adamant refusal of the IC and India to see that there are two nations in the island, he said.

Eezham Tamil protesters thronged the Terminal 4 of the Heatrow airport Sunday evening

Several hundreds of Eezham Tamils in London spontaneously gathered at the Terminal 4 of the Heathrow Airport on Sunday evening, holding placards and demanding the UK government not to allow entry to genocide-accused Rajapaksa in London.

The Scotland Yard allegedly leaked news that Rajapaksa would be arriving on Sunday night by a Sri Lankan Airways flight, deliberately to mislead the demonstrators, where as he arrived at London only on Monday morning, Tamil activists sources in UK told TamilNet.

On Monday noon several hundreds of Eezham Tamils belonging to various organisations, and especially the second generation youth, gathered outside the Park Lane Hilton hotel in London, where Rajapaksa was staying and demonstrated for nearly six hours. The demonstrators accused Rajapaksa of genocide and urged the British government to arrest him.

A group of Sinhalese have also arrived on coaches to exhibit their support to the Sri Lankan president, demonstrating with Sri Lankan flags opposite the Eezham Tamils.

A series of protests have been planned throughout Rajapaksa’s programme at London, especially against his special address at the Commonwealth Economic Forum organized by the Commonwealth Business Council at Mansion House on Wednesday, 6th June and an official lunch at the Commonwealth Secretariat at Marlborough House on the same day.

A few months back, before passing resolution on Sri Lanka at the Geneva UNHRC, some US officials meeting civil society in Jaffna told its members that there was no likelihood of war crimes investigations, as enough pressure has not come from the affected people.

The affected people in the island are gagged. In the free diaspora, claimants for leadership afraid of raising any voice against the erring international community, are sitting on any democratic struggle of the masses, even when the people are prepared. Tamils should not make the IC angry is their song. They wait for ‘signals’ to come from the IC to take even a small move. After diffusing tension by passing a resolution in the State Assembly the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is keeping quiet. From where on earth the pressure would come when the forces that seek pressure and sit on pressure are the same, asked the political observer in London.

Mahinda Rajapaksa will be welcomed everywhere and he will be needed by everyone as recognition to State criminality is a globally on-going trend taking place behind the back of the masses. One has to take a special note that he will be addressing the Commonwealth Economic Forum organized by Commonwealth Business Council, the observer pointed out.

“Not only from the USA, UK and EU to India, China and Russia that find him useful; but also from Vietnam for which Eezham Tamils wrote on the walls in 1960s to the Tamil foreign minister of Singapore, want to do business with him. Rajapaksa has become a symbol and inspiration for the new world order based on global criminalisation of State. Unless the alternative world of peoples shows its collective strength nothing would happen.

“By spontaneously staging an uprising Eezham Tamils could at least get rid of mediocrity and evolve a suitable leadership needed for them by the times. In the late 1980s we have seen how dangerous a leadership could be when it is ‘installed’ from the outside. If we do not prepare our leadership properly, we will once again get into such a situation. Mediocrity will always take politics away from people.

“The queen’s jubilee attended by Rajapaksa is an occasion for global Tamils and Tamils in the Commonwealth to show their solidarity in passing the message to the so-called international community and a Commonwealth that didn’t act on the question of Eezham Tamils. The queen is head of state not only in the UK but also in Canada, Australia and New Zealand,” the veteran political observer in London pointed out.

Eezham Tamils protest UK inviting Rajapaksa to Queen’s diamond jubilee

Eezham Tamils protest UK inviting Rajapaksa to Queen’s diamond jubilee

Eezham Tamils in the UK gathered outside the UK Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street on Saturday demanding withdrawal of an invitation extended to Mahinda Rajapaksa for the upcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth. A petition given to the authorities by the Tamil Coordinating Committee UK (TCC-UK) which had organised the event underscored the significance of Britain recognizing the protracted nature of the genocide of the Tamils in the island stating that “given its colonial history on the island, the UK, more than any other international power, is aware that the Eelam Tamils are a nation of people with their traditional homeland in the north and east of the island. Eelam Tamils expect the UK government to recognise this truth which can go a long way in helping halt the genocide.”

The long regnum of Queen Elizabeth II is almost contemporaneous to the post-colonial genocidal plight of the nation of Eezham Tamils, resulting from the legacy of the British rule.

Before the Sinhala-Buddhist State in the island severed its last token relations with the British monarch in 1972, the ultimate appeals of the helpless Tamil leaders on many occasions in their democratic struggle used to be directed to the Queen in the form of ‘telegrams.’ And the leaders, including SJV Chelvanayakam, were often ridiculed for the practice by the Sinhalese as well as the so-called ‘leftist’ Tamils, many of whom now sitting in the capitals of the West have forgotten their duties, commented an old generation participant of the London demonstration to TamilNet.

“The ‘telegrams’ have to be answered at least now, if the Conservative Establishment in London cares for not leaving the Queen’s long rule marked with a blot on the question of Eezham Tamils that has now become global,” the participant further commented. He was happy that at least now the British Tamils have gathered guts to address the issue directly to the perpetrators rather than beating around the bush with the agent state.

Meanwhile, the petition of the TCC-UK further said: “Given that the UK is privy to several reports by reputable human rights groups on the nature and scale of international crimes committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces, of which Mr Rajapaksa is the Commander in Chief, Eelam Tamils are puzzled by apparent lapse in the vetting procedure.”

“That Sri Lankan troops under the direct command of Mr Rajapaksa, his brother the Defense Secretary, Gothabaya Rajapaksa, and the Army Chief, Sarath Fonseka, murdered more than 40, 000 Eelam Tamil civilians and made disappear more then 147, 000 is widely acknowledged in international circles, including the March 2011 report of a United Nations Experts Panel.”

“In this backdrop, the decision of the UK government to allow such an individual to join the celebrations raises fresh questions on the UK’s commitment to human rights.”

“Mr Rajapaksa is only the latest of several Sinhala-Buddhist leaders who have been directing a protracted campaign of genocide against Eelam Tamils. This long process had been set in motion by the decision of the last British colonial rulers to hand over complete control of the island, including the Tamil homeland to the north and east, to the Sinhalese.”

“Given its unique contribution to the protracted campaign of genocide, the UK, Eelam Tamils believe, should take a lead role in prosecuting perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide on the island. Further, given its colonial history on the island, the UK, more than any other international power, is aware that the Eelam Tamils are a nation of people with their traditional homeland in the north and east of the island; Eelam Tamils expect the UK government to recognise this truth which can go a long way in helping halt the genocide.”

Protest in UK
Speaking to TamilNet, Dr. Andrew Higginbottom, lecturer in Politics and Human Rights at Kingston University, who has also joined the Tamil demonstrators at 10 Downing, said that the invitation to Rajapaksa was a political decision and thus, was the responsibility of British PM David Cameron.

He added that the Conservative government was being duplicitous because it knows that Rajapaksa was responsible for the genocidal attack on the Tamil people, but for their own reasons they don’t hold him responsible.

The UK, tagged behind the USA and India, doesn’t recognize at all that there was a genocide and there is an on-going structural genocide, The evil basically stems from the Nelson’s Eye of the erstwhile empire, and who else could take care of it if the British Tamils are not, commented the old generation Tamil participant in the demonstration.
