Colombo manipulates land figures in Champoor to retain lands

Champoor region in Trincomalee district has seen displacement since 1990. But, Colombo’s officials have been instructed to use the voter’s registry of 2005 in deciding those ‘eligible’ for resettlement in Champoor. Several families were uprooted within the 15 years. Further, the people demanding resettlement are asked to hand over ownership documents. Many families have lost their documents during the times of the war due to displacements. The uprooted people who are able to document their ownership to lands within the occupied ‘Economic’ zone will receive alternative lands elsewhere is the position of the SL Governor in the East. Through such manipulations, the figures of lands belonging to people within the occupied ‘Special Economic Zone’ have been manipulated down to 138 acres, the people complain.

Mr Austin Fernando, who was a former Defence Secretary in the UNP government led by Ranil Wickramasinghe in 2001, is now appointed as the ‘civilian’ governor of the East. Mr Fernando is behind the manipulation of figures, accuse Tamil civil sources in Trincomalee.

The Sri Lankan "Board of Investment" has not revealed its plans for these occupied lands under the so-called Economic zone. The seizure was decided by the Rajapaksa regime. Eezham Tamils have no say in the design of ‘Economic’ zone in their homeland.

Mr Fernando wants the ‘resettlement’ matter concluded as ‘resolved’ before April 31, 2015.

In the meantime, informed TNA circles in Trincomalee blame that the Colombo regime is using the geopolitical significance of Trincomalee in keeping Tamils continuously subjugated by the Sinhala military.

The Colombo government is in the rush to finalise a geopolitical deal behind the scene, they say.

All the foreign powers that are locked in the geopolitical game are upholding the genocidal military of Sri Lanka as their defence partner in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils. The UN is acting as the ‘trade union’ of these powerful States in truncating the demand of international investigation into a domestic process in the island.

“Until the outlook is effectively challenged by the global Tamils and the humanity in general, there would be no remedy for genocide affected Tamils,” an exiled activist from Trincomalee told TamilNet.
